TUBE MILL on BALL MILL.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Pn'rnn VILHnLM AnoLF AAcn Hnnus'r, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing in Holte, Geelsvej 15,
Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tube Mills or Ball Mills, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to tube mills or ball mills, in which the material acted upon is delivered to or from the mill through a hollow trunnion, by which the shell or drum is supported at each end. Such mills are generally rotated by the engagement of .a driving pinion on a shaft parallel with the axis of the mill, with a large gear which is mounted directly on the shell or drum of the mill, or on one of the heads thereof. With the continuously increasing demand for safety in the operation of such mills, and in view of the necessity of protecting the wearing parts from the contact of dust, etc., with the gearing and bearings, the driving of the mlll through such gearings is not altogether satisfactory. While the gearing may be enclosed or protected to some extent, for the purpose'of preventin accidents, it is not possible to make tight ints between the shell or drum of the mill and thecasing which encloses the gearing, and it is not possible, therefore, to avoid altogether or to such extent as may be desirable, the passage of dust from the outside within the protective casing or of oil from the bearings and engaging gears within the casing to the outside.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome the difiiculties above alluded to, which are incident to thedriving of such mills through gearing as described, and in accordance therewith, a driving shaft is placed, axially in line with the shell or drum of. the'mill and is connected through a suit- .able coupling with the. hollow" trunnion, which is itself closed at its outer end and is provided in its peripheral wall with suitable openings through which the material may esca e.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures I and II, the head a of a tube mill of ordinary construction, except as hereinafter pointed out, is shown as having formed therewith a hollow trun- 30 nion' I), through which material from the shell or drum 0 is discharged, as is well understood, in mills of this character. For convenience in construction, there is secured to the trunnion b, which is received in a suitable bearing, a hollow member d, which is virtually an extension of the trunnion, such hollow member and the trunnion b being conveniently secured together by means of flanges, e, g, and bolts f. The hollow member is closed at its outer end as by a diaphragm I0, and is provided in its peripheral wall with suitable openin s 2', through which the material discharged om the shell or drum is delivered upon a screen m, throu h which the finer material is discharged into a suitable, hopper 11., while the coarser portions are discharged through a chute p. the screen m,, the discharge chute p and the diaphragms j, and "k, which close the end of the member al In this instance the coupling member 11 which is keyed upon the end of the driving shaft 9 is operatively connected with the delivery member or trunnion extension (1,, through the medium of a flexible joint, the construction of which is illustrated in detail in Figures III and IV. As shown, the coupling member i, has secured to it a ring a, lugs y of which enter the circumferential channel formedin the flange t of the member 03 between spiral springs e which are received in chambers to formed by enlargement of the circumferential slot.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures V and VI, the driving shaft g, is coupled to the feeding end of the mill, the head of. which is shown at a through the hollow trunnion 6 its extension d, and the coupling member o,. In this embodiment of the invention, the extension (Z is formed with feeding openings '61,, providedninter nally with radial partitions e and the usual feeding cone 0,, and is armed exteriorly with scoops which take the material delivered to the chamber 7, and discharge it within the hollow trunmon.
It will be understood that the invention can be embodied in other structures which vary more or less in detail from that shown.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a mill of the character described, the combination of a shell or drum, a hollow trunnion by which the shell or drum is supported, the trunnion being closed at one end and provided with openings in its peripheral wall for the passage of material, a driving shaft axially in line with the drum or shell, and a coupling member through which the driving shaft is operatively connected with the trunnion.
2. In a mill of the character described, the combination of a shell or drum, a hollow trunnion by which the shell or drum is supported, the trunnion being closed at one end and provided with openings in its peripheral wall for the passage of material, a driving shaft axially in line with the drum or shell, and a coupling member through which the driving shaft is operatively connected with the trunnion, the coupling member being connected with the trunnion through a flexible joint.
