Description

I. S. DOWNING.
WINDOW LATCHING DEVICE. APPLICAT10N FILED APR.8. 1913.
Patented Feb. 15, 1916.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IRA S. DOWNING, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
WINDOW-LATCHING DEVICE.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA S. DowNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Latohing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to window latching devices, and has for its primary objects the provision of a latch or bolt in combination with improved means whereby the actuation of the means to release the bolt serves to positively force the window through its initial or starting movement. The device is particularly adapted for use upon railway cars in which the windows often stick tightly in closed position. One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a partial side elevation of a sliding window sash, with the device applied thereto, and with the bolt in locking position, Fig. 2 is a view similar to that of Fig. 1,'but with the parts of the device in the position occupied as the bolt is released and the window sash forced from its lowest position, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line IIIIII of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the window consisting of the usual glass and sash, 2 is a side frame member, 3 is a bottom frame member, and 4 is a metal plate secured at the lower side edge of the window sash and carrying the operating mechanism in which my invention particularly resides. The plate 4 is provided with a projecting lug 5 (Figs. 1 and 3) in which is slidably moun ed the bolt 6, such bolt 6 being held yieldi gly in forward position by means of the spring 7 interposed between the lug 5 and a collar adjacent the frontend of the bolt. The bolt is adapted to engage a series of recesses in the side frame member 2, the bolt being shown in engagement with the lowermost one of such recesses, in Fig. 1.
The rear end of the bolt 6 is pivoted to Specification of Letters Patent.

the lever 8, the lever in turn being pivoted upon the pin 9. The lever 8 is provided at 1ts right hand end with a rounded portion 10 which acts as a cam and cooperates with a wear plate 11 set into the bottom frame member 3.
In operating the device the fingers are placed under the left hand end of the lever whlch serves as a handle, and upon upward movement the catch 6 is retracted as indicated in Fig. 2, and a starting movement given to the sash by reason of the cam engagement between the portion 10 of the lever and the wear plate 11. After the sash is thus started it is comparatively easy to move it to any desired position, the bolt 6 cooperating with recesses in the side frame member 2 and holding the sash at any desired height in the same manner as any ordinary bolt. It will be understood that another device similar to the one illustrated is placed at the opposite side of the window.
- What I claim is:
In combination with a sliding window having a glass and sash, a bolt mounted on the sash for movement back and forth and adapted to engage a recess in the frame at the side of the window sash when the window sash is in its lowest position, a lever pivoted to the sash and comprising a handle and an end portion arranged so that the end portion is moved down when the handle is moved up, such end portion being adapted to engage the frame at the bottom of the window sashand give the window sash its initial movement, and a pivotal connection between the bolt and the lever whereby the bolt is withdrawn from the recess when the said handle is moved up.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
IRA S. DOWNING.
