PALLET.
Application filed November 12, 1924. Serial No. 749,517.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cnirronn G. RILEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Manchester, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pallets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is the provision of a pallet for use in clocks, watches and the like, that is simple and strong and susceptible of being manufactured accurately at low cost.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figures 1 and 2 are views at right angles to each other showing a pallet constituting one embodiment of my invention.
Figure 3 is a perspective of a modified pallet.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in Figures 1 and 2 to which reference will first be made.
The pallet 1 is formed of strip steel, preferably out to shape and bent up in a gang die, though it may be otherwise pro duced. It has a middle portion 2 with a central aperture 3, and it also has portions disposed at 90 degrees to the middle portion. The aperture 3 is for the mounting of the pallet on a pallet staff 5. The pallet characterized as stated is provided with integral arms 6 and 7 and hence constitutes a combined pallet and lever. The arm terminates in an enlargement having a bifurcation and two horns 9.
Manifestly the combined pallet and lever when formed can be hardened and tempered in bulk to the required degree of, or else semi-:hard steel strip may be user for cheap production. Experience has demonstrated that a steel hardened to the same extent as ordinary pins for pin pallets will have sufficient ductility to permit the shaping thereof into a part having the form shown in Figures 1 and 2.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the combined pallet and lever is susceptible of being easily manufactured by semi-skilled. labor with great accuracy in the resulting parts, and that the combined pallet and lever is much stronger than an ordinary pin pallet. Also that because of the length the pallet face can be safely made, the device can be slid up or down the staff so as to cause new portions of the pallet face to bear on the escapement wheel such as designated by 10 in Figure 1. It will also be noted that in my device it is not necessary to employ more than the two horns 9.
The pallet 1 shown in Figure 8 constitutes the subject of my application for British provisional application filed June 30, 1924, and it is designed to be used with a separate lever. It has a middle portion 2 with a central aperture 3 to receive a staff and also has portions 4 disposed at 90 degrees to the middle portion 2. This pallet is designed to be mounted on the pallet staff in such manner that the two arms or portions l rest parallel with the axis of the pallet staff. The edges of the arms 4L are adapted to act on the impulse faces of the teeth of the escapement wheel, and I desire it understood that when the pallet is designed to act as a pin pallet one of the edges of the strip of fiat metal, previous to cutting off and bending, can be made, if necessary, thinner than the other parts of the strip so that when it is bent the arms 4; will have a thin edge on one side.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a pal let in the form of a square shaped U and having an apertured middle portion and portions extending at right angles to the middle portion; the said pallet being f rmed of flat metal.
2. As a new article of manufacture a combined pallet and lever, formed of a single piece of flat metal and including a square U-shaped portion with an aperture in its central portion and also including an arm extending from one of the sides of the U- shaped portion and terminating in an enlargement having a bifurcation and horns.
