To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS A. VEIGEL, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Safety Snap Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of this invention is to provide a novel and practical form of snap or spring hook, such as is used to engage the ring of a watch, similar pendant ornamental articles and a chain or like support, providing a secure attaching means easily and instantly engageable.
A further object is to provide means, formed with the hook, for engaging the chain, all of the several parts being of integral construction.
These and other objects, such as economy and convenience in construction, neatness and symmetry in appearance, strength, lightness and adaptability, are attained by the novel design, constructional methods employed and arrangement of parts used, as hereinafter described and shown in the annexed drawings, forming an essential part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a snap hook made in accordance with the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 designates a blank plate or bar element, which may be rounded on its outer surface, as indicated, or flat as preferred.
The ends of the bar are attenuated or reduced in thickness forming pads 11 and 12 having curved lateral extensions or ears 14 and 14', and 15 and 15 at its respective ends,
these projections containing small circular openings 16 and 16 and 17 and 17 The pad 11 with its projections is slightly larger than the pad 12 and the openings 16.

Formed with the smaller pad 12,. at it outer marginal edge, is a semi-circular flat loop 18 its integrally attached ends being substantially in register with the openings 17 and 17'.
The blank is bent longitudinally on its center line in such manner that the pairs of pad extensions are each brought parallel and the loop 18 curved to produce an eye as shown in Fig. 5.
The next operation is to bend the bar along its median line, causing the pair of extensions 15 and 15 to enter closely between the" extensions 14 and 14', as shown in Fig. 6, and then insert a headed pin or rivet 20 through the several registering openings, a coiled expansion spring 22, having arms 23, being disposed on the rivet between the extensions 15 and 15, after which the rivet is headed in place.
Thus a connecting device is produced having a closed eye 24 within the loop 18, the
same being disposed at a right angle to the and, in order to present a smooth and level surface on the hook the lower curved por-' tion of the bar element 10 is bent slightly inward towards the center, this bending being only suflicient to restore the material displaced by the kerf of the saw or cutter in making the slit 26.
This disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive rather than limitative of the invention, as minor modification can be made without violation of the scope and spirit herein indicated and hereafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 'e 1. The method of making a snapuhook which comprises stamping a blank in the form of a bar having attenuated broadened ends, containing perforations, folding the blank longitudinally, bending the folded blank to produce a loop and an eye at one end and interengaging the ends until the perforations are in register, inserting a spring between the folded ends of said blank, riveting the ends, the rivet passing through the aligned perforations and spring, and,
making a diagonal cut through one of the side elements of the loop,
