CHARLES P. HOUSUM, OF DECATUE ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO HUGH W. HILL, 0F SAME PLACE.
lMPROVEli/IENT IN INSTRUMENTS FOR RINGING HOGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,669, dated November 10, 1874; application filed May 9, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. HOUSUM, of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Implement and Rings for Ringing Hogs, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to insert a ring in a hogs nose, to prevent it from rooting; and consists in forming an open ring. One of the ends is provided with an eye, and the jaws of the instrument are so arranged as to force the pointed end of the wire ring through the hogs snout into theeye of the ring, and clinch the point on the opposite side.
Figure 1 represents the instrument and ring closed; Fig. 2, the same open; Fig. 3, a plan of the jaw B; Fig. 4, a longitudinal section of the same,-taken 011 the dotted line an ac, Fig. 3; Figs. 5 and 6, plan of wire rings in perspective, both open and closed; and Fig. 7, perspective View of sheet-metal ring open.
A B represent the jaws of the instrument; 0 D, the handles; a, the pivot. The jaw A is provided with a slot or groove to prevent the ring from a lateral movement in closing. In the jaw B isa slanting groove, 2, and a recess, 0. (See Figs. 3 and 4.) The ring E is formed of wire, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, with an eye, 6, the other end being pointed.
The ring is placed in the instrument, as shown in Fig. 2, and the handles closed, forcing the point through the hogs nose and the eye of the ring, the point passing into the recess 0, and the necessary force clinching the point outside'of the ring.
The ring may be made of sheet metal, as shown in Fig. 7, with a head, 0 and a slot or eye, 0 This head can be stamped with such initials or marks as maybe desired.
I claim as my invention 1. The recess 0 in the jaw B, adapted to clinch tllie point of the ring, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The groove b, terminating in the recess 0, and adapted to hold and prevent the ring from slipping, as set forth.
CHARLES P. HOUSUM.
