Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS BLAIR, OFBUOYBUS, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR RINGING SWINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,656, dated March 17, 1874 application led February 7, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ELIAS BLAIR, of Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Devices for Ringing Swine and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a side dew of my device for ringing swine. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to instruments which are designed for inserting rings through the noses of swine to prevent them from rooting. The object of my invention is to construct an instrument of this kind which will insert large and small rings, and which will also serve as a nut-cracker and a cork-compresser, as will be hereinafter explained.
The following is a description 0f my invention:
In the annexed drawings, A A designate the handles of the instrument, on which two curved jaws, B B, are formed. The two parts forming this instrument are halved together and pivoted at a, like an ordinary pair of pliers. The two jaws B B are constructed alike, and their opposite concave sides or griping portions form about two-thirds of a circle, when they are adjusted, as shown in Fig. l, in which position of these jaws the space between them tapers from side to side after the manner of instruments for compressing bottlecorks; hence I have a very good cork-compresser. The concave side of each jaw B presents two longitudinal grooves, c c', separated by a ridge, c, and having serrations b on their outer sides. The groove c is smaller than groove c, and is intended forinsertingv and lapping the ends of ringsin small rooters or pigs, while the groove c is for much larger rings. The teeth b do not interfere in the least degree with the operation of inserting the rings, and they serve a very useful purpose for holding nuts between the jaws B B, when the instrument is used for cracking nuts. The ends of the jaws are left flat, as shown at g y, to prevent undue injury or pain to the animal while inserting a ring-blank through its nose. The two grooves are useful for inserting two rings at one and the same time to an animals nose, which it is very often required to do.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The instrument, substantially as described, consisting of grooves c c and serrations b, formed in the concave sides of jaws B B.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ELIAS BLAIR.
Iliitnesses:
B. H. BLAIR., S. MGORONY.
