COLLAPSIBLE HAT HOLDER.

Be it known that I, HUGH F. MoDoNALn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Collapsible Hat Holders, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in means from which to suspend hats or other articles of wearing apparel, and has for a principal object to provide a collapsible holder, or hanger, that may be secured to the backs of church pews, theater seats, wardrobes, and the like, and of a character that may be readily thrown into or out of position for use and be easily retained in 'either the one or the other of these positions through the action of a self-contained spring.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which like parts are 'designated by similar characters of reference, throughout, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred form of my invention, showing it secured to a section of the back of a seat, or other means of sup port, with a hat and purse suspended there from; Figure 2 is a perspective view, show ing the body-portion with its bracket-arm in position paralleling the surface of the supporting element; Figure 3 is a side elevation, as seen with the bracket-arm in position for use; Figure 4 is a detail on line 4 4 of Figure 2; Figure 5 is a modification., in which the body-portion is of one-piece, stamped, and bearing at its lower extremity a spring clip for retaining programmes; Figure 6 is a side elevation of the modification, as shown in Figure 5; and Figure 7 ii a 'detail of a combination clip and hook.

Referring with greater particularity te the drawings, 1 indicates a supporting element to which the device is attached, 2 the body-portion, 3 openings therethrough for the insertion of fastening means, 4 a springsection through whose resiliency a bracketarin slidably and rotatively borne by the body-portion is permitted to be swung into or out of position for use and which functions when in position for use as a means for the suspension of articles or wearing apparel, 5 a spring-extension `serving as a clip for the retention of programmes and also as a holder for vanity-cases, purses, and like small articles, 6 a bracket-arm slidably and rotatively borne by the body-portion 2 and adapted to be swung into or out of position for use and to be temporarily locked in one or the other of these positions through the action of the spring- section 4, 7 and 8 eX- treinities of the bracket-arm .6 fashioned for movable support by the body-portion 2, and 9 a curved section of the bracket-arm 6 serving as a suspension means for varied articles.

In the modification, as presented in Figures 5 and 6, the body-portion 10 is of onepiece, stamped, and carries openings 11 for the insertion of fastening means and an eX- tremity 12 bearing a spring-clip 13 in which programmes may be secured.

The spring-extension 5, as shown in Figures l, 2 and 3, may be of the form shown in detail, Figure 7, with the added advantage that it is more readily adaptable to the retention of several articles than the former.

Though the spring-section 4 is shown as an integral part of the body-portion 2, it is not desired to be thus restricted, as it is obvious that this feature could as well have been made a part of the bracket-arm 6 without departing in the least from kthe spirit o1 my invention, no-r is it the intent to be confined to the particular designs and constructions illustrated, as it is equally obvious that there are other constructions that would as well answer the purpose intended.

To move the hook member 6, 9 from the out-of-use position, as indicated in Figures 2 and 4, to that of in-position-for-use, the hook member is swung about until at right angle to its supporting surface, compressing to a degree through the action of 7 the resilient section 4, the reaction of which upon 7 serving, in turn, to hold the hook member in this position until forced to return to its original position.

Having thus described my invention, I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A hat-hanging device comprising a vertical supporting member formed of twisted wire having a resilient diamond-shaped member at its upper end, and a` hook member having loops embracing said vertical member and diamond-shaped member and loosely secured thereto for swinging horizontal movement thereon, said diamondshaped member heilig adapted to retain said hook member in position for use.
