Description

'6. W. HOLMES.
Washing-Machines.
No.l56,l57. Patenged oct.2o,1874.
mlwsses: Y Zzaezvon NTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. HOLMES, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,157, dated October 20, 1874; application {iled April 2l, 1874.
To all whom it may conce-rn:
Beit known that I, GEORGE W. HOLMES, of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a cross-section.
A represents a uted roller, having a journal at each end, which is connected to a Vertical bar, K, at each side of a washing-box, A. The lower ends of the bars K K are tenoned, and extend through a cross-bar, L, under the box. Around these tenons are coil-springs G G, held on by plates or nuts at the bottom. A crank, O, is attached to one of the journals of the roller A for operating` it.
It will thus be seen that the roller yields by means of the springs, and that the yield or play of the roller may be regulated by the nuts or plates at the bottom of the springs, which adjust the tension of the latter.
C represents a frame, which lies in the bottom of the box, and is readily removed there from. Within this frame, at each side of the roller, is an inclined apron, H H, stationary with the frame. Between these aprons H, and pivoted at E at their lower ends, is a series of vertical plates, D, rounded at' their tops, and secured between springs F F to the frame C. Between each plate are similar springs, so that, as the roller is revolved, these plates will be thrown back and forth.
The clothing to be washed is placed be tween the roller and the tops of the plates, and is carried back and forth on the aprons H.
What I claim is- The combination of the frame C, provided with aprons H H, pivoted vertical plates D and springs F, with the yielding uted roller A and the box A', all substantially as set forth. i
GEORGE W. HOLMES.
