SHOT CARTRIDGE c. E R. HOLDEN Filed Aug. 13. 1921 Patented Oct. 20, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES LE ROY HOLDEN, OF KINGS MILLS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE PETERS CAR- TRIDGE COMPANY, 0F CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
SHOT CARTRIDGE.
Application filed August 13, 1921.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES Ln Roi HOLDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kings Mills, in the county of lVarren and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shot Cartridges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shot cartridges and has for one of its objects thc provision of a container of shot for a cartridge provided with a member for reinforcing the base of the shot container.
A further object is the provision of a shot container for shot shells having the reinforcing member adapted to hold the shot container in shape during its passage through a gun barrel, and the like.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which the figure shows a central sectional View of a loaded shot cartridge equipped With my improvement.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, I have indicated a charge of shot l enclosed in a container 2. The charge of shot may be of any desired size and the container made to contain it, as indicated. The container 2 is preferably cylindrical with its top end closed, as viewed in the figure. It will be apparent that the closed end may be formed continuous with its sides, as indicated, or in any other desirable manner.
The bottom of the container is formed open and after the charge of shot is placed therein, a` cup-shaped member 3 is placed over the restricted portion 4 of the casing The restricted portion 4 is preferably provided so that the outer periphery of the member 3 will be' substantially of the same diameter as the cylindrical part of the con tainer 2. The cup-shaped member 3 may be attached to the container 2 in any desirable manner, such as by friction, or When desired, adhesive may be used tohold the parts together.
Serial No, 491,924.
It will .be apparent that the covering 2 may be of any desirable substance, either metall lic or non-metallic, which will hold the shot in place while being propelled through the barrel of the fire-arm, or the like.
The member 3 may be formed of copper, brass, gilding, tin, cupro-nickel, steel, iron. cellulose fiber, vulcanized fiber, non-iniiam mable cellulose fiber, parchmentized fiber, or other desirable substance which will have suicient strength to properly reinforce the container so as to make it hold its shape dur ing the passage through the barrel of the lire-arm and to prevent the flame and heat of the explosion from melting or otherwise distorting the shot next to the charge of powder or other exploding material.
The covering 2 when filled and closed by member 3 may be placed in an ordinary or any preferred form of cartridge 5 which has been provided with a charge of powder or other explosive 6 and a primer 7.
This improvement provides a shot container which will remain unbroken during its passage through the gun barrel, o-r the like, and therefore prevents the shot from coming in contact with the barrel of the tirearm and insures the latter against a tendency to become leaded. It also provides a more efficient check or seal to the hotgases of the propellant powder, or the like.
l. A shot cartridge comprising a shot c0ntainer having its sides adjacent its base restricted; a cup-shaped reinforcing member disposed over said restricted portion of the shot container; and a shell engaging said shotcontainer and reinforcing member.
2. A shot cartridge comprising a shell, a reinforcing member disposed in and substantially fitting the bore of said shell; and a shot container having its nose end closed and its base end-open, the walls of said shot container adjacent its base being restricted nd disposed Within said reinforcing inem- 3. A shot cartridge comprising a tubular shell closed at one end and open at the other; a, cup disposed in and tting the bore of the shell with the open side of the cup opening toward the open end of the shell; charge oiE explosive l'nuteiiui in the shell loev tween the bottom of the latter and the cup: :i ehm'ge of shot eXtf-ndinginto the shell; und a tubular covering on the shot, closed at its outer end with@ portion 'ofsitsi-pem riphery fitting the 'bore of the shell and another portion of Said periphery restricted 10 and fitting the bore of the cup.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciieation o11 this 9th day of August, A. D. 1921.
CHARLES LEHQYIHQLBEN.
