ATTACHMENT FOR SHOEBRUSHES.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that DONAT LnssAnD, a subject of the King of England, residing at East Broughton village, county of Beauce, in the Province of Quebec, and Dominion of Canada, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Shoebrushes, of which the. following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements 1n attachments for shoe brushes, and more particularly to a combined boX opener and device for cleaning ther soles of shoes.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective attachment for shoe brushes which will enable the user to readily remove the lid from the boX of paste to be used in connection with shining the shoes and at the same time permit the device to be readily used for removing dirt and clay from the soles of the shoes.

A further object resides in .providing a simple and efficient device of this character which may be quickly and readily applied* to shoe brushes now in use.

A still further object resides in providing a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.

With these and other` objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

In the accompanying` drawing forming a part of this application- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a brush with parts in section, showing my improved attachment applied for use thereon, and

Figure 2 is an elevation of the attachment removed.

In describing the invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which l designates a shoe brush having the usual back and bristles and secured to said back of the brush is a handle 2. rIhe handle is provided with an extension 3 which provides the portion to which the brush proper is secured and the forward end of this extension 3 4has removably secured thereto the augrilf iary brush 4 which is used for ,applying paste or the like. This form of brush is well known.

My invention contemplates primarily the application to a brush of this character of an attachment for the removal of the lid of a boX of shoe paste. It is a well known fact hat difficulty is experienced by one shining shoes in removing the lid or cover from the box and it is not desired to permit the lid to remain removed, because the paste dries under such condition. In order to facilitate matters I have provided my improved attachment. To this end I provide a member comprising a bolt-like shank 6 the lower end 0f which is threaded as shown at 7 to receive a nut 8. This bolt-like shank 6 is inserted through a vertical opening 9 extended through the central portion of the eXtension 8 of the handle and the back of the brush 1, as clearly shown in Fig, 1 of the drawing. The nut 8 is engaged with the 4threaded end of the shank 6 to retain the same in position as shown. Formed on the upper portion of the shank 6 is an integral collar 10 and at the junction of the shank with the collar is formed a substantially conical-Web or the like 11 which is countersunk in the upper face of the extension 3 of the handle when the attachment is applied to use, as clearly shown in Fig, 1.

Formed integral With the upper face of the. collar 10 and arranged as an extension in a vertical plane with the shank 6 is a flat diskelike head member 12. This head member has its outer edge slightly concaved as shown at 13.

It will be seen that through the medium of this construction a device is provided as an attachment to the brush, whereby the lid or cover of a shoe paste box may be quickly and readily removed. It is only necessary 'to turn the brush so that the head member 12 may be engaged with the lid of the box and the latter forcibly removed. The concaved edge 13 corresponds to the curvature of the peripheral edge of the paste container. It will also be seen that this head member 12 projecting, as it does, from the top of the brush may be used to scrape and remove clay and dirt from the soles of the shoes adjacent the uppers prior to applying the shoe paste.

,From the foregoing description. of the construction of my improved invention, the operation thereof Will be readily understoodfand. it will bei seen thatjI have provided a simple, inexpensive and el'licient means for carrying out the objects of the invention.

IVhile I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to\vithout departing., from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

Having thus, described my inve1ition,ivhat Iv claim is:

In a device of the class described, the combination With a brush; of a disk 1nember provided with. an integral threaded shank extending through the back of said brush, a nut engaged with the free end of said shank to yremovably 'secure the same to said brush, the disk member projecting beyond the back of said brush for use and having its outeredge concavech'as and for the purposes described.

2; In a device of the class described, the combination With a brush; of an operating member rcomprising a disk, a bolt formed integral therewith extending through the back of said brush, means for removably securing saidbolt to said brush, said disk extending beyond the back of said brush and having its outer edge concavedyras and for the purposes described.
