Description

UNITED STATES PATENTV @FITURo oOLUMRUs MUNN, or CAIRO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN VENEER-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,541, dated September 29, 1874 application filed August 29, 1874.
\ Wood by machines in which a pressure-roller precedes the cutter and is driven by contact with the Wood, it has been found impracticable to make use of some ofthe softer varieties of Wood, as veneers cut from the same would be broken and rendered Worthless by the operation. To remedy this objection, and enable any kind of Wood to be operated upon, is the design of my invention", -Which consists in the employment, Within `a veneer-cutting machine, of a pressure-roller placed immediately in front of the cutter, and having a posi- .tive movementupon or around its axis, so
as to causeits periphery at point of contact with the Wood being operated upon to move independently in thedirection of the same,
substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
Inthe use of my invention any form or arrangement of pressure-rollers may be employed; but for convenience of illustration the arrangement hereinafter named is used.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the head-block of a veneer-cutting machine made adjustable in the usual manner, and having mounted upon its inner face a knife or cutter, B, of ordinary construction. Upon the upper side of the head-block A is journaled a roller, G, which is made adjustable vertically and horizontally, and when in use is caused to bear upon the block of Wood D immediately in front of the cutter B, so as to prevent the same from checking or splitting in advance ot' said cutter.
The roller C has heretofore been driven by contact with the Wood; but in my machine said roller is moved positively in the desired direction by means of gearing E and F, or its equivalent, the relative speeds of the contiguous surfaces of said roller and Wood being preferably the same. I l
When thus operated, the machine Will cut the thinnest veneers from the softest Wood employed for such purpose without breaking or in any manner injuring the same.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is- In a machine for cutting Wood veneers, a pressure-roller placed immediately in front of the cutter, and having an independent positive motion upon or around its axis, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
In testimony whereof, and that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 20th day of August, A. D. 1874.
