ALEXANDER RODGERS, OF MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR SAWING LATHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,647, dated July 8, 1873; application filed April 12, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER ItoDcfERs, of Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented a new I1nprovement in Machines for Sawin g Laths, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a gang oi' circular saws on a horizontal arbor, in different sizes, with an inclined table, and feeding-rollers so arranged that lath and other like stuff may be sawed obliquely to the sides, to produce bevel-edged strips by saws on a horizontal arbor, which it is easier to keepin order ,than an arbor running in an inclined plane in connection with a horizontal table, which has heretofore been used for this kind of work, and the belt for driving the arbor can be controlled better on a horizontal shaft than on one inclined. My invention also consists of one or more feed-rollers made slightly conical, and provided with spira-l ribs arranged to force the piece to be sawed to the guide and keep it there, as well as to feed it to the saws.
Figure l is a side elevation of my machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation oi' one of the feed-rollers, and of which Fig. 4 is an end elevation.
A represents the saw-arbor; B, the gang oi' differential saws; (l, the feed-table; D, the guide and E, the feed-rollers.
The saw-arbor is arranged horizontally, and the feed-table obliquely, to it, but parallel with the plane of the upper edges of the saws, so that a piece of wood lying on the table on its side will be sawed obliquely thereto, so that i the edges of the strips sawed oft will be bevel to the sides. The gage D, which is at the npper edge of the table, is arranged parallel with the saws. I propose to make the upper feed-roll slightly conical, and arranged with the small end toward the guide, so as to force the material against it a-nd keep it so. And as a further means to this end, I propose to have spiral ribs G on one or both rolls, arranged so as to assist in producing the same effect. The
feedrollers are arranged on inclined shafts H, y
mounted in the curved standards I, and they are geared with the horizontal shaft K arranged above the frame, and provided with a driving-pulley, L, by which to be actuated in any suitable manner.
I am aware that differential saws have been used upon an inclined arbor, as is shown in the patent of J. H. Butler, No. 124,034., and, therefore, do not claim such arrangement.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the gang of dil'erential saws B on a horizontal arbor, A, and the inclined feed-table C, substantially as specilied.
2. The combination of the differentiall saws B, inclined feed-table C, and a feed-roller having a tapered form, also a spiral rib, and arranged to confine the work to the guide, substantially as specified.
ALEXANDER RODGERS. Witnesses:
