Be it lrnow n that 1, James SIMrsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Bivooklyn, connty of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in" ll-lade Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to blade holders particularly intended for use with safety razor blades, and my improvements are directed to holder which will expose the blad edgefor service and within which the blade may be retracted to ensheath its edge so that the device may safely be placed in a pocket or other receptacle.

The holder is adapted for employment with that type of safety razor blade having one edge sharpened to cutting fineness and its other edge enclosed in a folded metallic strip that provides at-hickened portion therefor, and my improved holder consists of a flat strip of metallic or other suitable inaterial having portions thereof folded over, in opposed relation at one side of said strip, and in spaced relation thereto.

The blade is to be gripped, at its thickened edge portion between one of these folded portions and the body of the strip, and the sharpened edge portion of the blade, when concealed for safety purposes, lies between the other folded portion and said body, but a slot is provided in the fold for extrusion of the sharpened edge when the device is to be put to use.

The blade is slidable within the holder to and from its blade exposed position.

Other features and advantages of my invention will hereinafter appear.

of thin sheet material of suitable stiffness, is shaped substantially as shownin the figures of the drawing, having the body portion 1, the top folded over portion and the lower folded over portion 3. The portions 2 and 3 are folded in such manner that they will lie in spaced relation to the body The safety razor blade 4t to be used with this holder has a sharpened edge 5 and an opposite edge which is bound or embraced by a fixedfolded strip 6 which accords it a certain thickness, the edges of strip 6 lying in the same transverse plane, parallel with the blade edges. At its fold the stizip 6 is given a bead like enlargements. features of the blade, which a well known article of manufacture, are described by me because they'enable the blade to react with the holder, whose structure has been so at vised as to enable the blade to be securely held therein while in operation, and also to be safely ensheathed thereby with its cutting edge concealed.

At the fold in the holder between portion 3 and body 1 a slot 9 is formed cutting away the material, said slot extending, with straight edges 10, 10, between end abutments 11, 11. The length of this slot slightly exceeds that of the blade, so that the latter may project therethrough.

The blade is placed in the holder by inserting it endwise between the body 1 and portions 2, 3. The portion 2 converges slightly toward the body that it may tensionally clamp the strip 6 while containing the beaded edge 8, when the blade is retracted. By this means the blade is held retracted, see Figs. 1 and 2, and the danger of injury being inflicted by the sharpened edge is avoided. When required to be put into service the blade is pressed outwardly to project its sharpened edge through slot 9 to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the forward edge 12 of strip 6 comes into contact with the edge 18 of portion 3, which latter serves as a stop to limit the outward movement of the blade. At the same time the bead 8 enters a longitudinal groove 14 formed near the edge of portion 2, at its inner surface, whereby, under the tension of portion 2, the blade is firmly held in its outward, operative position.

The material of body 1, at each side of portion 2, between said portion 2 and the ends of the body, is given an incurved outline contour, so that the blade, which is longer than portion 2, presents the ends of its folded strip 6 to linger pressure for pushing the blade outwardly. Also the front edge of folded strip 6 enables finger purchase to be had thereon in retracting the blade.

The cutter is adaptable for ripping seams and other housewifery purpose, also as an eraser, etc.

Variations within the spirit and scope of my invention are equally comprehended by the foregoing disclosure.

I claim:

1. A holder for razor blades comprising a strip of stiif sheet material having a body portion and oppositely folded portions in spaced relation to said body portion, one of said folded portions serving to tensionally grip a blade between it and the body, and the fold betweenthe other portion and the body having a slot through which the blade may be projected.

2. A holder for razor blades comprising a strip of stiff sheet material having a body portion and oppositely folded portions in spaced relation to said body portion, one of said folded portions serving to tensionally grip a blade between it and the body, said portion having less length than the blade to permit explosure of the blade ends, and the other portion serving to normally conceal the sharpened edge of the blade, the fold between said other portion and the body having a slot through which the blade may be projected.

The combination with a razor blade having a sharpened, edge and an opposite edge embraced by a blade thickening folded strip, of a holder comprising a strip of stiff sheet material having a body portion and oppositely folded portions in spaced relation to said body portion, one of said folded portions serving to tensiona-lly grip the blade, at its thickening strip, between it and the body, the other portion serving to normally conceal the sharpened edge of the blade, the fold between said other portion and the body having a. slot through which the blade may be projected.

4. The combination with a razor blade having a sharpened edge and an opposite edge embraced by a blade thickening folded strip, having a terminal bead formation, of a holder comprising a strip of stiff sheet material having a body portion and oppositely folded portions in spaced relation to said body portion, one of said folded portions serving to tensionally grip the blade, at its thickening strip, between it and the body, the other portion serving to normally conceal the sharpenededge of the blade, the fold between said other portion and the body having a slot through which the blade may be projected, the terminal edge of said other portion serving as a stop in the path of the blade thickening strip, to limit the blade outward movement, and the first named folded portion having a groove near its edge, to receive the bead formation and prevent retraction of the blade.
