UN ED STATEfi COlYIlSINATION' npplication filed. November 17, 1922. Serial No. 691,453.
T 0' all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Hanms- HANrLrG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Charlestown (Boston), county of Suffolk, Commonwealth of lviassachusetts, have" invented an Improvement in Combination Locks, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying'drawings, is a'specification, like characterson the drawings representing like parts in each of the several .views. i
' This invention relates to combination locks and more especially to a padlock type equipped with a combinationdevice in the body thereof that is arranged and housed in a manner so as to be completely protected and secure against tampering, while presenting a strong and substantial lock structure capable: of withstandingsevere usage. One important object of the invention is to provide a 'simple, but strong and substantial combination padlock wherein the lock may be set for any one of a great number of combinations by a simple andeasy adjustment. A "further obj ect" to provide a 'combination padlock wherein the bow or shackle is stronglyand securely engaged with the body or the" look when the combination is in looking position, and without any element or part being exposed that could be mischievously tampered with. A still further object is to provide a combination lock of the kind stated that is composed of relatively few parts and that is relatively inexpensive to manufacture and capable ofbeing taken apart and re-assembled without requiring any "expert attention; H The foregoing 'and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the distinctive features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a combination padlock embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 2-2 of Figure 4, the bow or shackle being shown in elevation;
Fig 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3--3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line4-4 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 5 is an elevation. showing the base of the lock with the combination discs assembledthereon; and
' 6 is a plan view of one of the combination discs ona relativelylarger scale.
, It) indicates a base member of my improved padlock which may'comprise a bl'ock or slab of suitable metal, preferablyioblong' in outline, and shown as having convex curt?- ing side portions. 'This base has secured centrallythereto a stout stud or bolt "ili'which may be threadedtherein as indicated at 11 and which'serves as a pivot rnounting for the discs o fthe combination and for the operating disc. 12'indicates'the't1ppe'r orbody' portion of the lock which is preferably bran outline corresponding "to that of thebase "10 and is provided with sockets 13, 14 at'its end portions to re'ceive the respective sides 15, 15 of the bow or shackle o'fthe lock,th e side 15*being plain, while the, side 15 "bear s a fin or rib 16 extending inwardly therefrom formed with'a' series of spaced apa'rt notches 16 In accordance with' my invention the body portionliZ ofthe lock'is securedto the base by means of screws 17,which extend downward from the bottom of the sockets 13, 14 and are tapped into the base." Thus with the shackle in pl.a'ce,"these screws are completely enclosed and "inaccessible so thatthere is no possibility oftainpering" therewith to take the :lock apart xcept when the shackle is removed aao emaag'aise 18 is fitted to'turn upon thestnd 11 ,restingupon the 'base 10, and having its sides eziten di'ng outward from thesidesof theb'ody 12m indicated at 18 the lowerportion-of the body 12being recessed to receivethi s disc'asfindicated'at19f The periphery otthedisc 18 is suitably graduated withapprop'riate numerals at intervals, and one side of the body may be provided with a mark 20 central of the opening 19 for convenience in turning the disc to definite points in its manipulation to open the lock. The disc 18 has formed or rigid therewith, and separated therefrom by a reduced neck, the lowermost one 21 of the series of combination discs, this disc and also each of those above it to be described having a notch 22 at one point in the circumference thereof. As herein illustratively shown the stud 11 has three additional combination discs 23 mounted to turn thereon, each provided with a notch 22 as described, and these discs spaced from one another by spacing washers 24:. These spacing washers 24: are
held from turning on the stud 11 by means of pins 25, borne by the stud 11 extending radially outward therefrom into notches in the washers, this arrangement thus permitting the several combination discs 2123 to turn freely upon the stud, while the interposed stationary washers 24 prevent any tendency of any one of these discs to turn other discs by friction. Each of the combination discs is provided with a series of spaced apart holes 26 at intervals therearound, these holes being threaded to receive pins 27 which may thus be selectively located on the several discs at different points with respect to the notches 22 of said discs. The
lowermost combination disc 21 has one of these pins 27 extending upwardly from the top face thereof, while the intermediate discs 23 each have one pin extending downward from thelower face thereof, and another pin extending upward from the upper face thereof, while the topmostone of the discs 23 has a pin extending downward from the lower face thereof only. It is to be understood that the discs 2123 are so spaced with respect to one another by the washers 24;, that when the shackle is inserted in place in-the lock, the notches 16 thereof will be in alinement with the respective discs I which thus serve to lock the shackle in place. It will then be understood that byturning the operating disc 18 first oneway and then the other'to a definite and predetermined extent, theseveral discs 2l23 may be so adjusted that V the notches 22 thereof, will all be brought into alinement with the fin or rib 16 of the shackle, thus permitting the hasp to be withdrawn. It is to be noted that the number of turns in each direction toattain this end may be varied and predetermined at will by setting the several pins 27 in different ones of the holes 26, so that a pin 27 of a lower disc will come into engagement with a pin of the next higher disc sooner or later as the case may be. The combination may also be Varied in a great number of changes, by merely shifting the relative positions of the discs 23, or by inverting one or more of the intermediate discs. To permit the discs 23 and also the operating disc 18 to be removed from the stud 11 when required, these are provided with notches 28 permitting them to clear the pins 25 when adjusted to the proper angular position for this purpose. The stud 11 preferably has its outer extremity extending into a socket in the outer portion of the body 12 as indicated at 29, thus contributing to strength and rigidity and also permitting the discs to be removed and interchanged by merely taking off the body 12 after removing the screws 17. I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing descriptionto indicate the scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, what. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
A combination lock, comprising a base bearing a stud and operating disc and combination discs mounted to turn on said stud, a body fitted to said base, housing said combination discs and provided with a recess into which a restricted portion of said operating disc extends to render the same accessible for manipulation,-said body equipped with shackle sockets, a shackle slidably fitted to said sockets, and screws securing said body to said base extending from the bottoms of said sockets, whereby they are completely enclosed and inaccessible when the shackle is in place, said body having in its outer portion a socket in which the outer end of said stud fits to hold said discs assembled in operative relation with a capability of removal and interchanging to chan e the com bination upon removal of said body from said base.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification. I 7
