To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, ELI PORTER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Padlocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to combination padlocks, and the principal object of the same is to provide a lock with a novel type of locking means which is so constructed that it may be readily locked and unlocked when desired.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the combination padlock. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the padlock. Fig. 3 is a transverse section along the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a transverse section along the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the sleeve. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the shaft which fits within the sleeve. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the locking disks. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the washers which are placed between the locking disks.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be seen that this invention comprises a body portion 1 which is provided with a recess 2 in one side which communicates with a longitudinally extending socket 3. The bottom of the socket 3 is provided with a reduced end portion, and with a small well 5 at the bottom of the reduced portion t. A smaller socket 6 is formed in the body portion parallel with the socket 3. A sleeve 7, which is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 8 is mounted in the socket 3, and has one end seated in the reduced portion 4. A shaft 9 is mounted in the sleeve and is provided with a pin 10 at its lower end which fits within the well 5, a coil spring 11 being mounted in the well and surrounding the pin 10 with its upper end contacting with the lower end of the shaft 9. The shaft is provided with a longitudinally extending recess 12, and with oppositely disposed openings 13 formed in the walls of the recess so that substantially triangular latches lt may be pivotally mounted in the recess upon the pins 15 which pass through openings 13. These latches are mounted 01f center so that they will normally rock outwardly and are held in the normal position by means of springs 16 which are mounted upon a plate 17 secured to the inner wall of the recess 12. A pin 18 is mounted in the upper end portion of the shaft 9 and serves to prevent the shaft from being removed when the combination is set to release the lock. The upper portion of the shaft extends above the sleeve 7 and is provided with a cut-out portion 19 which forms a locking tooth 20.
Vashers 21 and locking disks 22 are alternately mounted upon the sleeve 7 within the socket 3, the washers 21 being provided with tongues 23 which fit into a groove 24 extendlng from the socket 3. The washers are each provided wlth a central key-hole opening 25 and have one side cut away as inclicated by 26, so that the faces of the locking larged inner portion 31 having a recess 32' The shaft 9 and extending therefrom. sleeve 7 extend into the opening 30 and the recess 32 is positioned so that it registers with the smaller portion of the key hole opening formed in the upper washer thus permitting pin 18 to pass through the recess 32. A second opening 33 having an enlarged inner portion 34 is formed in the cover plate with the opening registering with the socket 6. A shackle 35 passes through the opening 33 into the socket 6 and has a spring 36 surrounding the portion of the shackle which passes through the enlarged opening 3%, the spring bearing against the disk 37. The free end of the shackle is provided with a jaw 38 which engages with the tooth 20 when the device is locked. The cover plate is held in position by means of screws 39.
In assembling thisv lock, the shaft is passed through the sleeve 7 with the latches 14 projecting through the'slot 8, and the washers and locking disks are mounted upon the sleeve with the outer portions of the latches positioned in the smaller portions of the key-hole opening formed through the washer. After the locking mechanism is in place the shackle is mounted in the opening 33 and the cover plate is mounted upon the body portion and secured in place by means of the screws 39.
In order to use this lock, the locking disks are turned so that the characters which are opposite the small recesses of the key-hole openings will be in alinement thus forming a clear passageway so that the spring 10 may move the shaft outwardly thus raising the shackle against the tension of the spring 36. The shackle can then be turned so that the jaw 38 will not engage the tooth 20.-
VVhen it is desired to lock the device, the shackle 35 is turned so that the aw 3S and tooth 20 will be in engagement and the shaft will then be forced into the body portion and the disks 22 turned so that the combination will be scattered.
By having the latches shaped and mounted as shown in Fig. 2 the shaft can be moved within the sleeve to lock the shackle without setting the combination. It should be noted, however, that after the shaft is moved to the position shown in Fig 2, it is impossible to release the shackle without setting the combination.
l/Vhat I claim is 1. In a look, a body portion provided with a longitudinally extending socket, a sleeve mounted in said socket, and provided with a longitudinally extending slot, a shaft slidably mounted in said sleeve, latches pivotally connected with said shaft and projecting through said slot, locking disks and spacing washers alternately mounted upon said sleeve and said locking disks adapted to be engaged by said latches to lock said shaft within said socket, and a shackle pivotally and slidably connected with said body pore tion and adapted to be engaged by said shaft to lock said shackle.
2. A lock comprising a body portion provided with a longitudinally extending socket having a reduced inner end, a spring mounted in said reduced end, a shaft mounted in said socket and contacting with said spring, a sleeve surrounding said shaft and provided with alongitudinally extending slot, a plurality of latches pivotally connect-ed with said shaft and projecting through said slot, locking disks and spacing washers mounted in said socket and surrounding said sleeve,'said locking disks adapted to engage said latches, and a shackle pivotally and slidably connected with said body portion and adapted to be engaged by said shaft.
3. A look comprising a body portion provided with a longitudinally extending socket having a reduced inner end and a well formed at the bottom of said reduced end, a sleeve provided with a longitudinally extending slot mounted in said socket and fitting within said reduced end, a shaft provided with a longitudinally extending recess, and a pin extending from the inner end of said shaft into said well, a spring mounted in said well, and surrounding said pin, latches pivotally mounted in said recess and projecting through said slot, locking disks mounted in said socket and adapted to engage said latches to lock said shaft, and a shackle pivotally and slidably connected with said body portion and adapted to be engaged by said shaft.
4. A look comprising a body portion provided with a longitudinally extending socket, a shaft mounted in said socket and provided with a longitudinally extending recess, a plurality of latchespivotally mounted in said recess, a plate secured to the inner wall. of said recess, a plurality of springs mounted upon said plate and engaging said latches to normally look the same outwardly, a sleeve surrounding said shaft and provided with a slot through which said latches project, a plurality of locking disks mounted within said socket and adapted to engage said latches to lock said shaft and a shackle pivotally and slidably connected with said body portion and adapted to be engaged by said shaft.
5. A look comprising a body portion provided with a longitudinally extending socket having a longitudinally extending groove leading therefrom, a locking shaft mounted in said socket, locking disks and spacing washers alternately mounted in said socket and surrounding said shaft, said spacing washers being provided with tongues fitting within said slot to prevent the rotation of said washers, means carried by said shaft for engaging said disks to lock said shaft, and a shackle slidably and rotatably connected with said body portion and adapted to be engaged by said locking shaft.
6. A lock comprising a body portion pro vided with a longitudinally extending socket, a locking shaft slidably mounted in said socket, means pivotally connected with said shaft and adapted to permit the insertion of said shaft and resist its withdrawal from said socket, locking means within said socket adapted to be engaged by said pivotally mounted means and a shackle slidably and pivotally connected with said body portion and adapted to be engaged by said shaft.
