UNITED STATES CLARENCE R..WADLDLE, OF OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON.
FOLDING NURSERY STOOL.
Application filed August 2 3, 1923.
vide a combined folding steel and nursery` chair having a removable seat pad arranged to cover the top of the chair seat, said seat pad having flaps secured to opposite sides thereof that are arranged to be drawn across the bottom of rthe seat, said seat pad and flaps being adapted to conceal the hole in the seat when the device is folded or is 3 being used as a stool and being readily removable to permit the device to be used as a nursery chair, the flaps being adapted to fasten over and cover the legs of the chair when said legs are in a folded position. 5 Another object is to provide a folding stool of this nature having legs of novel construction that are pivotally secured to the chair seat by means that will facilitate ease of operation and that will effectively 3 retain said legs in either an extended or folded position.
A further object is to provide a folding stool and nursery chair of this class that is strong, simple and compact in construction and that presents a neat and attractive appearance either in the folded or extended position.
Other and more specific objects will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure l. is a plan view of the combined stool and nursery chair with the top pad and bottom cover flaps removed.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on broken line 2 2 of F ig. 1 showing the cover f pad and bottom cover iiaps applied thereto.
F 3 is a detached inverted view in perspective of cover pad and bottom cover iiap portion.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view showing the cover pad and flap portion detached and turned back out of the way to permit the device to be used. as a nursery chair.
Serial No. 658,936.
Fig 5 is an inverted plan view of the de! vice with legs folded and bottom cover iiaps Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference numerals designate like parts, designates a seat member, of strong and substantial construction, as of veneere'd wood, which seat member is provided with a centrally arranged opening 11 of the form common to nursery chairs. The seat member 10 is preferably of rectangular shape and is provided adjacent two opposite edges, as at front and rear, with two leg members 12 and 13 respectively. The leg members are preferably in the form of metal rods bent substantially U shape and terminatiiig in bearing portions 14 that are bent inwardly and other portions 15 that are bent at right angles to the bearing portions 14 and that serve to limit the swinging` movement of the legs when the same are extended. The bearing portions -14 of the legs are rotatably mounted in metal clips 16 preferably formed of pieces of sheet metal and secured to the bottom of the chair seat 10 by rivets or screws 17. The metal of which the clips 16 are formed is bent upwardly on one side to form on each clip a friction member 18 arranged to rub against the lug 15 of the adjacent leg member 12 or 13 and to yieldingly hold the same, said friction members being recessed or bent concavely to more firmly hold the legs 12 and 13 in extended positions and being long enough to maintain a frictional pressure against the lug portions 15 when the legs are folded. The flat portions 19 of the metal clips 16 by which such clips are secured to the chair seat 1() form metal bearing members against which the lug or stop portions 15 of the legs may abut when the legs are extended. One of the legs, as leg 13, is slightly longer than the leg 12 and is bent as at 2O so that said legs will fold eoinpactly one over the other.
1l/Vhen the legs 12 and 13 are folded the outer end of the leg 13 will preferably snap beneath the ends 15 of the leg 12 and the legs will be securely but releasably held in the folded position., see Fig. 5.
The legs 12 and 13 being of substantially U shape with fiat outer ends Will rest evenly on the surface on which the stool is placed Without digging into or marring such surface. This feature is particularly advantageous in a camp stool due to the fact that legs of this form will not readily sink into the ground.
The seat 10 is arranged to be covered by a seat pad 21 preferably built on a rectangular metal frame 22 and provided on the front and rear edge with short flaps 23 having snap sockets 24 arranged to snap over and be secured to studs 25 on the front and rear edges respectively of the seat 10. The pad 21 is provided on opposite sides, at right angles to the short flaps 28, With longer flaps 26 that are arranged to be drawn across the bottom of the seat member 10 and secured together, said long flaps having readily releasable snap sockets 24 and snap studs 25 provided in the respective edges thereof.
yThe long flaps 26 are arranged to entirely conceal the hole 11 in the seat 10, said flaps being draifvn directly across the bottoni of the seat 10 ivhen the legs are extended and being drawn over the legs when said legs are in the folded position, thereby making a very neat and compact package and one that has no outivard appearance of being a nursery chair either when folded or extended With flaps in position.
By unfastening the long Yflaps 26 and releasing the pad 21 from one or both edges of the seat 10 the device may quickly and easily Vbe made ready for use as a nursery chair.
The seat pad 21 is preferably of padded construction built on a rectangular frame so that When it is placed onthe seat 10 the hole 11 Will add to the elasticity and resiliency of the pad and mak'e it .more comfortable to sit on. j
The device is particularly ivell adapted for use in travelling, touring or camping due to its compact construction when folded and to the fact that it may be put to various uses both when it is folded and when it is extended. The seat pad 21 for covering the top of the seat 10 and the iiap 26 for covering the bottom of the seat are important features of this invention due to the fac-t that they completely cover the hole 11 and conceal the identity of the device except when it is being used as a nursery chair.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings clearly disclose what l now consider to be a preferred embodiment ot' my invention but ivill be understood that this disclosure is merely illustrative and that such changes in the device may be made as are within the scope anc CSpirit of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a folding nursery stool, a seat having a central opening, legs arranged to fold against the bottom side of said seat and reieasable flap members arranged to he dr. n across the bottom et said .seat to cover said opening when said legs are exten-fled and to cover said opening and said legs when said legs are folded.
2. ln a nursery stool, a seat having a hole provided therein, a seat pad arranged to cover the top of said seat and fla-p members Secured to the edge of said seat pad and arranged to cover the bot-tom of said seat.
3.v In a nursery stool, a seat, having a hele provided therein, a seat pad arranged to cover the top of said seat, detachable means for securing the edges of said seat pad to thc edges of said scat, two flap members secured to opposite edges of said seat pad and arranged to be drawn across the bot-tom of said seat and readily detachable .means for securing the edges of said two flap members together.
