TOURISTS KIT.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES BILLBURG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Tourists Kit, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a tourists kit and has for its object the provision of a tourists kit which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture and highly efficient in use.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a tourists kit which may be utilized for carrying objects and which may also be transformed into a table having an even and uninterrupted upper surface...

Another object of the invention is the provision of a tourists kit having removeable legs and means for preventing the undue withdrawal of the legs from operative position.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention will be best understood from a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention in open form,

The invention in its preferred form comprises a kit after the type of the conventional suit case and embodies a compartment 7 hingedly connected at 8 to a com partmcnt 9, the suitcase in this instance opening at the center so that the two com I partmeuts are substantial duplicates of each other. leaf 10 is hingedly connected at 11 to the compartment 7 and serves as a closure therefor. A leaf 13 is hingedly connected at let to the compartment 9 and serves as a closure therefor. Extending around the compartment 7 on the inner surface thereof is a shoulder flange 12 which serves as a stop for the leaf 10, the upper surface of said stop member being positioned sufficiently below the edge of the compartment 7 to allow the leaf 10 to lie thereon with its upper surface flush with the upper surface of the edges of oompartment 7. A similar shoulder forming flange is likewise mounted on the compartment 9. for serving the same function in the same manner relatively to the leaf 13. Snap .fastenerstuds 16 are mounted on theleaves 10 and 13 which cooperate with snap fastener sockets 17 mounted on straps which are secured to the compartments, these snap fasteners serving to secure the leaves in the closure serving position. Mounted on the compartments at'the corners thereof are sockets 19 which have one en'd20 closed and provided with a lug21 through which. may be projected bolts or rivets for securing the same to the compartments. Legs 22 are provided which are adapted for engagement in the sockets, each of said legs being provided adjacent its upper end on the end which isadapted for insertion into the socket, with a pocket 23 in which is positioned a ballsbearing 25, a spiral spring being positioned between said bearing and the base of said pocket. The edges of the opening are crimped inwardly to retain the ball in its seat. When the leg is thrust into the socket the ball is forced further into the pocket 23 against the pressure of the spring so that there is thus maintained a close engagement of the ball with the inner surface of the socket and thus the undue removal of the leg from the socket is prevented.

The leaf 13 is designed to be equipped with carriers for holding dishes and the like, the particular type of carriers or fasteners being immaterial in thisapplication. Conrpartment 9 may be utilized for carrying supplies as may also compartment 7. One of these compartments may also be utilized for carrying folding chairs, it being the intention to supply such with the kit.

It is evident that the invent-km embodies a means of carrying supplies when i t is used after the manner of a suitcase. When it is positioned in the form shown infFig 1, the invention forms a very satisfactm'y table which is stable and firm and presents a smooth and flat upper surface. By forming the legs in the manner indicated it is evident that slight dcpressions or elevations in the ground upon which the device is placed may be accounted for by thrusting the legs farther into the sockets or by slightly with drawing thesame therefrom.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction I do not Wish to limit myself to the, precise details of structure shown but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A tourists kit comprising' acontainer; socket bearing members on said container; legs adapted for insertion into said sockets each leg being provided with a pocket formed therein; a ball positioned in said pocket and adapted for rejecting slightly therefrom; and means For retainingsaid ball normally projecting from said pocket.

2. A touri's'ts kit comprisinga container; socket bearing; members mounted thereon; legs adapted-for insertion into said sockets each leg being provided With a pocket formed therein; a ball positioned in said pocket and adapted for normally projecting therefrom; and resilient means for retaining said ball normally projecting from said pocket.

3. A tourists kit comprising a container having a pair of compartment bearing members l ingedlyconnected along their edges and adapted for opening into alinement with each other in the same plane; a plurality of socket bearing members mounted on each of said compartment bearing members; a plurality of legs, 'each of said legs being adapted for insertion into one of said socket bearingmembers, each of said legs having formed adjacent the end inserted into said socket a pocket; and spring-held means n mintod in said pocket adapted for engag ing the inner "surface oi said socket bearing; member for retainingeach legin fixed relation relatively to said socket for ai'lording a plurality of adj-ustn'ients of said leg relatively to said socket.
