To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, EDWARD R. Pn'rnm, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVhisties, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.

This invention relates to whistles or other sounding or musical devices, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this class which is so constructed as to permit of the use thereof on the body of the wearer or operator, as for example, upon the finger of a hand or upon the wrist of an arm whereby convenient means is provided for supporting a whistle or other instrumental device to facilitate the use or operation thereof by the wearer, and a further object of the invention is to provide a whistle or similar device of the class and for the purpose specified which may be used by police men, particularly traffic policemen, and which may also be used by individuals in the home for the purpose of calling help in the manner of the use of police whistles at the present time, and by providing an ornamental device of this class as well as one which may be placed upon the body of the wearer, the same will always be in a predetermined position and ready for use at the will of the wearer, and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction and efiicient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of my improved device and indicating the method of its use;

the police, and heretofore it has been cue tomary to secure such whistles in connectionwith predetermined articles or in connection with the garments of the wearer by means of chains and the like, and it is the object of this invention to provide a whistle of the class and for the purpose specified which is so constructed as to permit of the attachment of the device, or the mounting of the device upon the body of the wearer, particularly upon a finger of a hand, or upon the wrist of the arm of the wearer in order that the whistle may always be retained in a predetermined and upon a predetermined part of the body of the wearer thus facilitating the use thereof and avoiding the necessity of grasping for a whistle that may be suspended by a chain or otherwise mounted in connection with the wearer, or the garments of the wearer, and in carrying my invention into effect, I have shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing one form of whistle 5 which is, in the form of a signet ring and adapted to be mounted upon a finger and comprises a main hollow body 6 approximately hemispherical in form, or provided with a convex outer face 7 and a concave inner face 8, said body being provided at one end with an outwardly and upwardly turned lip portion 9 having an aperture 10 which communicates with the chamber 11 of the hollow body 6, and the body 6, or the outer wall thereof, is provided adjacent to the lip 9 with an aperture or apertures 12 through which the sound vibrations are adapted to pass and a ball member 13 is mounted in the chamber 11 and is adapted to aid in the production of a loud report or whistle as with similar devices of this class.

The top wall of the body 6, or the apertured portion 12 thereof, in the construction shown, is provided with letters A J as shown at la in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and these letters may be the initials of the wearer or any other ornamental means may be provided on the device 5. The body 6 is also provided with a depending loop 15 which is located approximately centrally thereof, and the loop in combination with the body 6 forms the complete ring and the finger of a wearer is adapted to be passed through the loop 15, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and with the device mounted in such position it will be apparent that the mouth may be placed over the lip 9 and by blowing), into the chamber 11 to vibrate the ball member 13 therein a loud whistle or sound will be discl'iarged through the aperture or apertures 12.

In F 3 of the drawing, I have shown another modification in which I employ a large ring n'iember or bracelet 18, the general construction of which will. be that of an ordinary bracelet such as worn by women and children, and one side portion 19 of the bracelet will be made hollow or tubular in to -:11 or provided with a chamber 20 and the side 19 will also be provided with an upwardly directed lip portion 21 having an aperture 22 which communicates with the chamli er E20 and adjacent to the lip portion 21 is an aperture or apertures 23 which also communicate with the chamber 20 and through which sound vibrations are adapted to pass when air is blown into the chamher 520 through the aperture 22 by placing the lip portion 21 in the mouth of the wearer. I also preferably employ a ball member 24; which is mounted in the chamber 20 and adapted to oscillate or vibrate therein in the manner of other whistles of this class and a pin 25 is also preferably employed to limit the movement of the ball member 2 in one direction.

With the construction shown in Fig. 3 it will be apparent that I provide a large chamber 20 and with a device of this sort by blowing through the aperture 2-2, as above set out, a loud report may be given, and it will also be apparent that by constructing the device in the "form of a bracelet, as shown, the same may be worn by women or others and will have an ornamental appearance and will always be in a position for use by the wearer.

It will be understood that while I have shown certain methods of carrying my invention into CODSU'HCtlOll ot rot and specific forms and the device shown and described, that l am not necessarily limited to these details, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing; from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A vhistle device of the class described of rigid material compr' m a hollow whistle body which is concave-convex in cross section and provided at one side with a contracted and projecting lip portion which opens into said body portion, said body portion being provided adjacent to said lip portion with apertures and the opposite side walls of said body portion being extended downwardly to form a loop member through which a linger is adapted to pass.

2, A whistle device of the class described, composed of rigid material, comprising a hollow whistle body which. is concave-coir vex in cross section and provided with a contracted. and projecting lip portion which opens into said body portion, said body pon tion being apcrtured adjacent to said lip portion and the opposite side walls of said body portion being extended downwardly to form a loop member through which a finger is adapted to pass, said lip portion when the ring is placed on the finger of the wearer, being co-extensive with the joint of the finger.
