Figure 9 is a perspective-view of an insole 0.1 a child's-shoe-havinga rlb formed around the entire periphery; and,

Reference will nowbe had to these views by means oi like characters which are employed to designate corresponding; parts throughout.
Thenumeral lindicates ingeneral a table which is in'the nature of a. stationary bed plate of apunch machine. On the top oi this memberisformed a pair of lateral flanges 2 through whichset screws 3 are threaded.
The movable or punch carrying member dis formedwithsimilar flanges 5 through which are passed set screwsfi. The central portion odthis-n1einben is adapted to carry an inside wooden block 7 supported by means oil pins8-- This block is inade of wood i and has the configuration of the rib to be formed on the insole. It is adapted to be engaged around its periphery by a punch or presser plate 9. This may entirely surround the inside block for forming a rib of the type shown in Figure 9, or may surround it partially for stamping a rib oi? the character shown in Figure 8. Against the plate 9 are placed a plurality of retaining wooden blocks 10 suitably cut for fitting tightly against the plate. The lateral blocks 10 are engaged by longitudinal clamping wooden blocks 11. Between these are disposed similar wooden clamping blocks 1% adapted to bear against the end retaining blocks 15. The ends of the blocks 14: are formed with slots 12 having a substantially oval cross section. Threaded bolts 13 are passed through the ends of blocks 11 and through slots 12 in such a manner as to connect the outer blocks and clamp them against the inner blocks. It will be observed that the bolts are of the usual circular cross section so that the blocks 14 are allowed asmall amount of play by the slots 12. The men1- bers 14L are engaged by the set screws 6 whereby they may be tightly pressed against the members 15.
The table 1 similarly carries an inside block 7 having the same contour as the member 7 but of a slightly smaller area. Around this block is placed a leather spacer 16 which in turn is surrounded by a boundary plate 17 whereby there is formed a peripheral space 18 around the member 7. This space is adapted to receive the presser plate 9, as pointed out below. The boundary plate is held in tight engagement with the washer by means of clamp blocks 11 and 14: the latter being actuated by the set screws 3. The construction of the blocks 11 and 1 1 is such as to accommodate bolts 13' and other actuating mechanism similar to that described with reference to Figure 1.
The form of the invention already described is adapted to contain a closed presser plate for forming a rib entirely around the periphery of the insole as illustrated in Figure 9. In Figure 3 is illustrated an alternate set of blocks for holding a presser plate 9 for forming a partial rib of the character shown in Figure 8.
In the operation of the invention as thus far described, the desired presser plate is clamped into position by means of the blocks, bolts and set screws, as will be obvious from the description of Figures 1 and 2. The insole 18 is now placed upon the lower inside block 7 while the member t and associated parts are spaced therefrom as shown in Figure 1. The movable member 7 is now pressed downwardly, whereby the plate enters the space 18, carrying with it a corresponding portion of the insole. The member 1 is moved downwardly until the plate reaches its limit on the bottom of the space 18, forming the stamped rib designated by the numeral 19 in Figure 6. The punch carrying member 4: is now raised and the insole is removed.
The process is completed by stitching the rib thus formed. This operation consists in placing one side of the rib upon the table 20 of the sewing machine, as shown in Figure 7. The base of the insole bears against a guide roller 21 while the needle 22 is caused to pass through the rib from the opposite or inner side thereof. The insole is turned until the entire rib is stitched, as shown in cross section in Figure 10.
It will be obvious that the member 1 may be movable while the member 4 is stationary, or that both members may be movable if conditions require such a construction.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that various alterations in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated by the appended claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is An apparatus for making insole ribs comprising a bed, an inside block secured thereto, a spacer surrounding said block, a boundary plate surrounding said spacer and forming a groove with the block, retaining blocks engaging said boundary plate, clamping blocks engaglng said retalnln'g blocks, screws for pressing said clamping blocks into engagement with the retaining blocks, a punch carrying member movable relatively to said bed, an inside block carried by said member, a presser plate engaging the periphery of said block and adapted to enter said groove, retaining blocks engaging said plate, clamping blocks engaging said retaining blocks, and screws ior pressing said clamping blocks into engagement with the retaining blocks.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
