.' c.` HANSEN IDOUBLE DRUM HOIST Filed April 5, 1924 INVENTR l ('hmfledlfaaen m5 ATTO'R Y Patented .lune 30, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFSFICE.
UHARLES C. HAN-SEN, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO INGERSOLLRAND COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPCRATION OF NEW JERSEY.
' DOUBLE-DRUM Hors/r.
Application led April 3, 195.24. Serial No. 703,875.
To all wlwm it may concern: Be itlninown that I, CHARLESC. HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Easton, county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Double-Drum Hoist, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to hoists but more particularly to power driven double drum hoists, which are adapted to bedriven from a common source of power.
The objects of this invention are to enable two drums as for instance, the 'haulage drum and the tail rope drum, to be driven from a common source of power by im roved means and devices which automatica ly disconnect one drum and connect the other drum to the driving shaft in accordance with the direction of rotation' of the shaft. Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the invention is shown'in one of its preferred forms' vin the accompanying drawings, in which- A Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of'va double drum hoist, and
Figure 2 is a Adetail fragmentary section showing the arrangement of .the friction plates.
Referring 'to the drawin s A designates abaee plate upon which the oist is mounted andto which the end frames B are suitably connected. A shaft Otis adapted to rotate in the framesfB and is referably formed with suitable thrust bearlngs D at the op posite ends thereof. Suitable oil pockets E may be provided in the end frames B for supplying lubricant to the shaft C, and covers F are preferably provided for the oil pockets E. y
In this instance an electric motor G is shown mounted on a base H although it is to be understood that any .suitable motor may be employed. A driving pinion J is driven by the motor G and meshes with an I internal gear K which is in this instance to which suitable'brakes (not shown may be ap 'lied if desired. The inner sur ace of the anges Q are provided with ribs or A main driver U preferably in the forml of an annular plate, provided with a hub V, in which a Sleeve W is preferably cast, and engages a worm X'which is 'in this instance formed on the shaft C. Rotation of the shaft C in-one` direction Acreates a thrust to move the main driver U in one direction and upon reversal ofthe direction ofthe rotation of the shaft.C, thel main driver U wilLbe moved longitudinally by the worm X in the opposite direction. One or. more ribs or keys Y is in this instanceI formed on the outer surface of nthe hub V of'the main driver U. A seriesy of annular friction plates Z are preferably formed with ke ways a which are adapted te fit over t e 'keys Y. Another series of friction lates S alternate with'the friction plates Z etween the main driver U and the drums L and O and the number of these plates may be va one or the other of the drums. VIn this manner one or the other of the drums twill be driven according to the direction ofrtation of the driving shaft G. driver U forces the alternate The `main plates S 'and Z into frictional engagement, with each other and thereby positively connects one or theA other of the drums L and O to the shaft C. When one of the drums is being driven, the other drum is adapted to rotate independently thereof.V Suitable cables b and c are' wound about the drums .L and O respectively for haulage or 'other purposes.
In order to exert a braklng or checking eiect upon the drums to prevent .the cables l b and c from beihg unwound too rapidlyfrom the drums 12,4 and O respectively, guide sleeves d are secured to the cud frames B and plungers e are slidable in the guide sleeves. Brake shoes f are connected to the yp'lungers e and are provided with brake linings g, which are adapted to bear' against the sides of the drums L and O to'exert a llt:
checking or braking effect thereon. 'Suitable springs h located between onevend of the plunqers e and` an adjusting plug y' con stantl'ly force the plungers e outwardly from tbe guide sleeves al against th sides 'of the drums.v
I claim:
In a hoist, the Combination of a. frame, a rotatable shaft, a motor connected to operate said shaft, two drums rotatable about said shaft, a worm on said shaft, a main driver in en agement with said worm adapted to be move longitudinally relative to said shaft in one direction or thel other in accordance with the direction of rotationof said shaft, a series of friction plates carried by said main driver, and a second series of friction plates carried by said drms alternating re spec-tively with the plates on said driver, the two series of plates being adapted to be forced together by said main driver to drive one or the other of said drums according to the direction of rotation of said shaft,
In testimony whereof I have signed this
