Toall wlwmitmayconcern- .Be it known that we, MATHIAsfRABnn and JOHN H. CUMMINGS, citizens of the United States, residing at Bend, county of Deschutes, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishhook Holders, of which the following is a specification. i

This invention relates to improvements in fish hook holders of that type commonly known as flies.

The general object out the invention is to provide a device of the above described character which may be employed .torretaining fly-hooks or plain fish hook, with or with- .Out leaders attached, in an orderly fashion,

and without danger of losing said hooks.

It is also an object of the invention'tha't the device be adapted to permit the removal of one or more hooks therefrom without danger of disengaging other hooks which might be carried by the holder.

It is a further' object of the invention that the device be durable, simple in structure, and inexpensive to manufacture.

Other objects relating to details of structure, will appear in the detailed description to follow.

. Figure 1, is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line H of Figure 2. j I a Referring to the drawings more particularly, the device may comprise a base or sup port 10, two side or guide members 11 and 12,- a hook retainer 13 and a pair of spring members 14:.

The, base member 10 is preferably in the form of an elongated plate having each end provided with an offset portion 15, which terminates in a lateral lip-like extension 16. Each extension 16 may be provided with a rivet receiving opening, and these extensions may be employed for securing the device to a basket or satchel, or to a persons wearing apparel. 'In fact the device could be secured to anything for supporting the same canvenient-ly for the user. i

The members 11 and 12 are each in the form of an elongated L-shaped plate, the portion 17 in each instance being riveted to the base plate 10. The portion 18 of each member is provided adjacent its upper and longitudinal edge with a plurality of slots '19, said slots preferably being of the shape shown and extending vertically. When the members 11 and 12are positioned the slots 19 register and .the opposing faces of the ,portions 18 of said members are spaced by the lugs 20 formed upon the portion 18 of member 12. The lugs 20 arepreferably four in number, .two being arranged at each end of the plate portion 18 as best shown in Figure 3. The plate portions 18 are secured toget-her by rivets 21, and thus providing a guideway between said plate portions which is adapted to slidingly accommodate the hook retainer 13.

The member 13 is in the form of an elongated plate and adjacent one edge is provided with a plurality of slots 22, which are similar in shape to the slots19. The slots 22 correspond in number to the slots 19 in either of the members 11 or 12, and the plate 13 may be brought to a position so that its slots 22 register with the slots 1 It will be noted that each pair of lugs 20 are arranged to provide a passage 23 there between. The plate 13 is provided at each end with an extension 24:, and each extension protrudes through its associated pas sage 23. The extensions 24. are of less width than the passages 23, and thus a limited vertical movement of theplate 13 is permitted.

Thefplate 13 is further provided upon its lower edge and at each end thereof'with an extension or tang 25. t is important to observe that the plate '13 is slightly less in length than the guideway provided between the lugs 20.

The springs 14 are preferably U-shaped as shown and may be made from suitable spring wire. Each spring has its one end terminating in a lateral extension 26, which extends through an opening in the base plate 10 and thereby holding said spring in applied position.

As obvious from the description of the present device heretofore given, the different elements utilized may be stamped and assembled in a rapid manner. The device is compact and preferably the members 10, 11, 12 and 13 should be made of aluminum or similar light weight material in order to reduce the weight of the device to a minimum.

In using the present device, the member 13 is depressed until its slots 22 register with the slots 19 of the members -11 and 12. A hook may now be extended through each pair of registering slots 19 and the associated slot 22. In Figures 1 and 2, a hook 27 is positioned as heretofore described. Upon releasing the plate 13 the springs 14 press the plate upwardly and thereby bind the hooks which may be positioned in the slots against removal. In case the hooks are provided with leaders or flies, the same are so held that the leaders and flies can dry evenly and quickly.

If it is desired to remove a hook at one end of the device, he corresponding end of the plate 13 can be depressed sufiiciently for the removal of the hook. Ihe plate 13 may be depressed at one end without appreciable movement of the other end of said plate dueto the fact that the plate, is loosely fitted between the lugs 20 as previously stated. This operation insures that none of the hooks will become disengaged from the device while a hook is being removed.

Ne claim:

1. A fish hook holder comprising a movable member having a plurality of hook receiving openings, and means whereby with a limited movement of said member said hooks Wlll be bound agalnst removal from said openings.

2. A fish hook holder comprising a spring pressed member having a plurality of hook receiving openings, and means adapted to cooperate with said spring pressed member for binding said hooks in said openings against removal.

8. A fish hook holder comprising a member having a plurality of hook receiving openings, guide means for permitting movement of said member, and means adapted to operate for binding said hooks Within said openings with the movement-of said member a certain degree.

4:. A fish hook holder comprising a spring pressed plate having a plurality of hook receiving openings, and means for binding said hooks against removal from said openvber having openings adapted for receiving fish hooks when brought into register, and bind said hooks whensaid openings are out of register a certain degree, and means to urge the plate member to assume aposition for bringing its openings out of register with the openings in said guide plate.

7. A fish hook holder comprising a pair of guide plates, a plate movable between said guide plates, said guide plates and plate member having registering openings adapted for receiving fish hooks, and also binding said hooks against removal when the plate member is moved a certain degree.

8. A fish hook holder comprising a pair of guide plates, a plate movable between said guide plates, said guide plates and plate member having registering openings adapted for receiving fish hooks, and also binding said hooks against removal when theplate member 18 moved a certain degree, and

springs to urge the plate member in a vdirection for binding the hooks in said openings.

9. A fish hook holder comprising a pair of guide plates, a plate member movable between said guide plates,'said guide plates and said plate member having registering slots, and springs beneath the plate adapted for urging the same in a direction to bring I the openings therein in non-registering relation with the openings in said guide plates. 10. A fish hook holder comprising a panof guide plates, a plate movable between said guide plates, said movable plate having slight endwise movement, and said guide plates and movable plate having registering hook receiving openings, and springs pressing the movable plate in a direction for bringing the hook receiving openings of the movable plate and said guide plates into nonregistermg relation.
