E. W. LOESSER VANITY CASE Filed April 50, 1924 IN V EN TOR.

VANITY CASE.
Application filed April 30, 1924. Serial No. 709,992.
Y '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST W. Lonssnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vanity Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved vanity case which is adapted to contain two separate kinds of cosmetics or powder and to keep them separate so that one does not sift into the other and which can be manipulated in an easy manner.
The invention consists of a vanity case which has a lid On the inside face of which is mounted a supplemental box, the box being adapted to contain powder or rouge or the like and the parts are disposed so that when the lid is opened both boxes are opened and when the lid is shut both boxes are shut.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a top view of the improved vanity case with the lid open and Figure 2 is a section taken on line 22 in Figure 1. Figure 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 in Figure 1 and Figure 4 is a similar section with the lid closed. Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the supplemental box shown in the form of the box illustratedv and a part of the bezel in the lid to illustrate one manner of securing the box thereto.
In the drawing 10 indicates the vanity box or main box which is of the usual form being substantially tray-like and adapted to hold a compact 11 of face powder or the like. The box has a lid 12 hinged thereto as at 13 and having the usual catch 14 by means of which it is held shut.
On the inside of the lid 1 place a supplemental box 15 which is usually supplied with a compact 16 of rouge or of a cosmetic contrastingwith the compact 11 as it is desirahle that the material from the supplemental box should not sift into the main box.
The box 15 can be hinged to the inner face of the lid in any suitable way but I show it secured to the bezel 17 which also functions to hold the mirror 18 in place. I show the inner edge of the bezel provided with knuckles 19 and the box 15 provided with a knuckle 20, these knuckles being adapted to receive a pintle 21 so that the supplemental box 15 can swing freely but of course, is limited in its movement downward so that the box 15 is at. right angles to the lid when the lid is open so that when the lid is substantially vertical the box is horizontal and is slightly above and well to the rear of the compact 11 giving suflicient clearance for the easy insertion of the puff 22.
It will be seen that when the lid is swung open both boxes are presented uncovered since both boxes are opened when the lid is opened. A small pufl (not shown) is usually carried in the box 15. When the lid is swung to closed position both boxes are automatically closed thus requiring the manipulation of nothing except the lid and as the lid is swung toward its closed position, the supplemental box 15 slides forward on the puff 22 which acts as a cushion so that when the lid is entirely shut as shown in Figure 4, the puff acts to hold the top edge 23 of the supplemental box 15 up against the mirror 18 and when the case is carried about the material does not sift out of the supplemental box 15.
Various changes in the shape and ornamentation of the box and of its parts can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A vanity case comprising a tray-like box with a hinged lid, and a tray-like supplemental box hinged at the back. of its top edge to the lid at a point within the lid and adapted to be suspended horizontally thereon when the lid is open, the lid closing both boxes when it is swung shut.
2. A vanity case comprising a tray-like box with a hinged lid, a supplemental box secured at the to of its back edge to the inside of the lid at a point within the lid and hinged thereto so that it is substantially horizontal when the lid is open, the lid when swung shut closing both boxes.
8. A vanity case comprising a tray-like box adapted to hold a compact and a puff, a lid hinged to the box and a supplemental box hinged at the back and above the bottom of the supplemental box to the inside face of the lid at a point removed from the hinge of the lid and swinging freely on the lid whereby both boxes are substantially parallel and open when the lid is opened, the supplemental. box being held closed against the inside face of the lid by the pnfi in the main box when the lid is shut.
4:. A vanity case comprising a tray-like box, a lid hinged to the box, a mirror on the inside of the lid, a bezel fitting the lid and holding the mirror in position a suppleinental box the supplemental box and the bezel having knuckles forming a hinge 10 for supporting the supplemental box.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing, I have hereto set my hand, this 29th day of April 1924:. i
ERNEST W. LOESSER.
