E. P. SHELDON ASSOCIATING MECHANISM INVENTOR ATTYS Filed Nov. 28, '1922 Patented June 2, 1925.
UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD P. SHELDON, 01 NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO B. ,HOE AND 00., or New 7 YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
.ASSOCIATING MECHANISM.
Application filed November 28, 1922. Serial No. 603,808.
To all 10710772 it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. SHELDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county of Kings, andBtate of New York, have invented certain new and useful l mprovei'nents in Associating Mechanism, fully described and represented in the following specification and the acco'mpanying drawings, forming a part of the same. 7
This invention relates to certain i1nprovements in associating and delivering mechanism for web printing machines.
In certain types of associating and delivoring mechanisms for web printing 1nachines asheet, cut from a web or from any suitable source of sheet supply, is associated with one or more sheets cut from a web from another source, cutting-and collecting cylinders being employed for associating the sheet with the web and cutting a sheet or sheets from the web for association. The associated cut sheets then go to the former or other folding apparatus, such a type of machine being illustrated in my prior Patout No. 572,225, datedDecember 1, 1896. In this type of machine the associated product is delivered to the former from the last pair of cutting and collecting cylinders by means of rolls, which take the product and for ward it to the former. Where these rolls are employed it frequentlyhappened that the product slipped a little and did not ad vance the tail of the cut sheet past the cutting line when the sheet was cut from the web with which the cut sheet had been associated, the cut sheet having a tendency to slip back somewhat so that the tail of this sheet was again out when the sheet was severed from the web, this resulting in socalled double cutting of the sheet, which is objectionable. r
It is the especial, object of the present invention to improve the mechanism of this type of machine, to prevent this double cutting, the cut sheet or sheets and the web being positively seized and advanced beyond the last cutting mechanism, so that the cut sheet or sheets cannot slip back when a sheet associated therewith is to be cut from a web, the tail of the cut sheets being advanced slightly past the cutting line so that double cutting is prevented.
With this and other objects not specifically referred to, the invention consists in" certain novel parts, arrangements and combinations, which will be specifically described in connection with theaccompanying drawing and the novel features then pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.
In this drawing- .The figure is a side elevation, partly in section and partly broken away, of so much of the delivery end of a web printing machine as is necessary for an understanding of the invention.
Referring now-to this drawing, in the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated, a web is forwarded at full speed and a second web is forwarded at a slower speed than the full speed web. Sheets are cut from this slow speed web and associated with the high speed web the sheets then being out therefrom, and furthermore in the 1 particular embodiment of the invention illustrated, the slow speed web will be as sociated between two sheets from the full speed web though it will be understood that the invention may be used in associating and delivering products other than specifically shown. 7
Thelow speed web which in the present instance, is a web running at half speed, is indicated by the letter Iii. This web after being printed in a suitable printing mechanism, not illustrated, passes over a guide roll 1 suitably supported in brackets 2 secured to the main side frames 3 of the machine. From the guide roll the web passes between a pair of driving and forwarding rolls 4, 5 to a pair of cutting and forwarding cylinders marked 6, 7, mounted on shafts 6', 7, suitably mounted on standards 600 supported from the frames of the machine,
the cylinder 7 being provided with a cutting V knife 8 and the cylinder 6 being provided with oppositely disposed cutting woods 9.
In the particular construction illustrated the cylinder 6 is twice the size of the cylin der7 and is driven at half speed. This cylinder is provided with sheet taking devices in the form of pins 10 which are operated in the usual manner to impale a sheet and forward it. 7 i
A full speed web marked F after being printed in any suitable printing mechanism, not shown, is forwarded over a guide roll 11, suitably journaled in the side frames 3 of the machine to a pair ofdriven forwarding rolls 12, 13, suitably mounted in the side frames and from these rolls is led to a pair of cutting and collecting eyilinders it, 15, the cylinder 15 being provided with a cutting knife 16 and cylinder 14 being provided with a cooperating cutting wood 17. These cylinders .14 and 15 are provided with sheet taking devices, as pins 18, operated in the usual manner and these two cylinders are driven at high speed, that is, the speed of the full speed web F, and are one half the size of the cylinder 6. These cylinders 1st, 15 are mounted on shafts 14%, 15 supported in standards on the machine frame.
The sheets cut from the half speed web are forwarded so as to be taken bythe sheet taking pins on the cylinder let and brought up to full speed. Vhil'e this may beeffected in various ways, in the particular construction illustrated, the cylinder 6 is provided with cut-away or depressed portions 19 in advance of which arefeeding segments 20 which cooperate with a roll 21 to feed the sheet forward, after they are released by the sheet taking pins 10. As the depressedpo'rtion 19 passes the roll 21 the sheet is released and as at this time the pins 18 on cylinder have talten the head end of the sheets the tails of the sheets are free so that they can be taken at the l'iigh speed of the cylinder 14;. The cut sheets from the half speed web H are forwarded to the cylinder 14 between suitable guides 22, 23 and are fed up to these guides by the feeding.
segments 20 and the feed roll 21. y
In the particular construction illustrated a half speed sheet is forwarded to the cylinder 14:, after a full speed sheet has been taken thereby, and this half speed sheet and full speed sheet are associated with the full speed web, so that the half speed sheet will be between two full speed sheets, the second full speed sheet being severed from the web after association. In accordance with the invention means are provided whereby double cutting of the associated sheets isprevented as the web is severed to cut oil the second high speed sheet. 'VVhile this means maybe somewhat varied, they will include devices for positively seizing the sheets and the associated web, and forwarding them so that no slip can occur that will bring the tail of the sheets into the cutting line, the forwarding devices being so arranged that the tail of the sheets is advanced slightly beyond the cutting line at the time of the cut.
In the particular construction illustrated these devices for positively seizing and for warding the associated product are pins24,
, which are mounted on a forwarding carrier,
shown as a cylinder25, Where the carrier is a cylinder this cylinderwill be arranged so as to be slightly out of axial alignment with the cutting. and collecting cylinders 14, 15, so that the tail of the sheets are for- Warded slightly beyond the cutting line of cylinders 14, 15 at the time they act to sever the sheets from the web. As shown, the shaft 26 of cylinder 25 is arranged slightly above the shafts 14, 15 of cylinders 1 1, '15. Cooperating with the cylinder 25, is a for warding roll 27 which acts to forward the products to the former 28, or to any other desired mechanism.
It will be observed that when the cut sheet is associated with th web on the cylinder 15 it occupies a position on the outside of the cylinder, the web being on the inside, this position being maintained until the web and the sheet pass to the cylinder 25, at which time, however, they have been seized by the sheet taking pins 2 1. The cut sheetis therefore spaced from the cylinder the thickness of the web. While this spacing is very slight, it is sufficient to thus slightly advance the sheet so that the tail of the sheet is just beyond the cutting line at the time of the cut. This slight advance is maintained by positioning the forwarding cylinder 25 slightly out of axialalignm'ent with the cutting cylinder 15. This positioningof th cylinders causes a tight hug of the web and the associated sheet around the surface of the cylinder and prevents any tendency of the sheet to slip back so that the tail falls into the cutting line at the time of the cut. It will be observed, furthermore, that the sheets are under a positive direct engagement from the time they are taken by the pins 18 on the cylinder 14 until they pass into the biteof the forward ing roll 27, so that there is no liability of the sheet slipping, that is, during and after association the sheets are positively controlled and are not simply pushed forward- Furthermore, the structure is compact and can be conveniently, arranged at the folder end of the machine. g
If desired for the production of certain products, the web H may be led directly to the cutting and collecting cylinders let, 15, over a guide roll 29, and associated with the web F, or both webs H and F may be associated at the cylinder 25, and led to the former. y
While the invention has been shown and described in its preferred form, it will'be understood that certain variations and changes may be made in the specific constructions shown and described and that the invention is not to be limited to the exact mechanism illustrated.
