DELIVERY MECHANISM FOR. rEIn'rme-rEEssEs'.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 17, 1919.
Application filed December 11, 1917. Serial No. 206,590.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HOWARD M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Delivery Mechanism for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification. The object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in delivery mechanism for sheet feed rotary printing presses whereby wide sheets after they are printed, are slit lengthwise of their travel and are combined with slip sheets and delivered in piles sideby side to allow the several piles of alternating printed and slip sheets to be handled separately.
My invention more specifically comprises means for feeding the printed sheets through a slitting device to a transfer carrier to be associated thereon with slip sheets fed thereto side by side from a suitable source, the transfer carrier serving to convey the pairs of associated printed and slip sheets to the delivery device.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure 1 is a detail vertical section taken from front to rear through a sheet feed rotary printing press and its delivery mechanism, embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal section through the press. i
Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section at the outer end of the endless delivery carrier, and
Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal section taken in the plane of the line IV-IV of Fig. 3.
The impression cylinder is denoted by 1, its plate cylinders by 2, and the cylinder which feeds the sheets from the table 3 to the impression cylinder 1, by 3?.
The sheet delivery mechanism for the printing press includes the rotary printed sheet feed carrier 4, mo-unted on a suitable shaft 5 and provided with a set of grippers 6, which grippers are arranged to take the head 'of the printed sheet from the impression cylinder 1 with the freshly printed side of the sheet toward the cylinder'4. The printed sheet is slit lengthwise of its travel on the cylinder 4, into two or more smaller sheets, in the present instance into two smaller sheets, by a slitting disk 7 carried by an arm 8 on a cross bar 9. A rotary slip sheet feed carrier 10 is mounted on a shaft 11, and is provided with grippers 12 which.
are operated to take the slip sheets side by side from the feed table 13. A rotary transfer carrier 14 is mounted'on a shaft 15-, and it is provided with one or more sets of grippers 16, in the present instance two sets are shown, which grippers are arranged to associate theslip sheets with their respective printed sheets, byfirst being raised to clear the leading edges of the slip sheets and then remaining open until they reach the transfer point between the cylinders 4 and 14, where they seize the pairs of associated printed and slip sheets. The slip sheetsare under the control of the tapes"10* around the cylinder 10, which tapes coaot with the cylinder 14 from the timethe slip sheets are released by the grippers 12 until they are taken by the grippers l6.v An endless delivery carrier 17 is shown as provided at intervals with grippers 18 arranged to take the pairs of associated printed and slip sheetsfrom the grippers 16.0f the rotary transfer. carrier 14, and to. deliver the so as: sociated pairs of printed and slip sheets in piles side by side on the delivery table 19.
The cams for controlling the operationof the grippers 6 on the rotary carrier 4, are denoted by 20, 21. The cams for controlling the operation of thegrippers 12 onthe rotary. carrier 10, aredenoted by 22, 23. The camsfor controllinglthe operation ofthe grippers l6-of the rotary carrier 14, are def noted by 24, 25. The cams for controlling the operation of the grippers 1 8 on the endless delivery carrier '17, are denoted by 26, 272 Series. of frictionxrollers 28, carried by spring-actuated rock levers 29 pivoted to arms 30 on-the cross bar 9, maintain control of the printed sheets on the rotary carrier 4, after the advance edges of the sheets have been released by the grippers 6. p l
Suitable sheet stops 31 are provided at the delivery table'19, against which stops the leading edges of the associated printed and slip sheets are directed as they are released from the grippers 18 ofthe 'endless delivery carrier. 1 I
It is intended that the driving connections between the several parts maybeZarranged to drivethe parts at the. proper relative speeds, andas such driving mechanismmay be of any well known or approved form, no
specific description of the same will be given herein. 7
It is evident that'various changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts-without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not intendto limit myself to the structure herein described, but
What I claim is:
