i the glued end thereof, thereby allowing a Be it known that I, COLONEL J. CURTIS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at.
Osage City, in the county of Osage, State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Pencil Holder; and I do hereby declare the following tol be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichV it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to pencil holders,
and has for its object to provide a device of this character formed from a single piece of material, and constructed in a manner whereby it may be easily and quickly attached toca conventional form of tablet at pencil to be maintained with the tablet when not in use.
A further object is to provide` a pencil holder adapted to be attachedto a tablet and comprising a body portion adapted to be forced through the glued end of vthe tablet between the stiff back thereof and the last page of the tablet and adhesively oined to the inner side ofthe back of the tablet'. Also to provide the body portion with a bend disposed at a right angle to the body portion for engaging the glued end of the tablet for holding the same in position during the gluing operation and relieving the strain on the gluedconnection of thebody member.
A further object is to provide the right angularly disposed portion of the body por` appliedthereto and'part of the tablet brokenV away to better show the structure. y
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the tablet part being shown in section and showing the device in side elevation. p A
arrangement of parts as hereinafterset f Figure" 3 is 'a view Vof the glued end "of the tablet. f
.U'ItlTEDj STATES-'P Referring to the drawing, the numeral l designates a conventional form of tablet, 2 the front cover thereof, and 3 the relatively stiff cardboard back. n The sleeves 4 of the tablet, are secured together and to the front and back of thev tablet by means of the gum strip 5 in the usual manner. It` has been found that school children lose their pen` cils or misplace the same, and to obviate this difficulty and to maintain the pencil 6, when not in use, adjacent the pad l, a pencil holder is provided, which holder comprises a rectangular shaped plate 7 adapted to be inserted through the strip 5 into a position between the rear page of the tablet and t-he back 3 ofthe tablet, andadhesively joined` to Jthe inner side of the back 3 at 8, thereby rigidly securing the holder to the tablet.
The outer end of the plate 7 is bent upon itself at 9 to form a right angularly disposed arm l0, which engages the strip 5, and. not only limits the inwardv movementV of the plate 7 to its proper position, but also` forms a: bearing surface for one side of the pencil 6, and prevents side twisting of the plate 7 when the pencil is being inserted in the semi-circularv roll 11 which frictionally holds the pencil. i y Y vIt will be seen that the device is formed from a single piece of rsheet metal, and the same may be easily and quickly applied to a `tablet and may' be easily removed when `the'tablet has been used and the sheets of papel.' removed therefrom,` therefore .the
same holder may be used for many tablets.
It Vwill also'beseen that thel pencil 6 will be maintained attached to the tablet whennot in use, in a manner where it cannot become separated from the tablet andwill always i be in position where `it` can be easily removed andl used.` This pencil or`pen holderff Y i can be fastened to the back of the tablet by gluing, stapling, clenching` or various other 'ways This pencil or pen holder vcan be fastened to either end or either side of theback .i
of the tablet, book or the like.
The invention having been set is claimed as new and useful is The combination with a tablet having a cardboardy back and a plurality of leaves, said back being secured to the leavesA by an adhesive strip at one end thereof, of a pencil holder, said holder comprising` a flat aan what metallic plate disposed between the cardboard back and the pieces of paper and adhesvely joined to the inner side of the back, the outer end of said plate extending through an elongated slot in the adhesive strip, a right angularly disposed arm carried l by the plate at its outer end and engaging the outer side of the adhesive strip and eX- tending towards the front of the tablet 10 and a pencil receiving roll carried by the name to this specification in the presence f of two subscribing witnesses.
