WILLIAM R. HOYT, OF STAMFORAD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNORv TO TItIE YALE 'IIOVVNE` MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STASMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
LOOK` STRUCTURE.
Application filed Aprl 25,1924. Serial No. 708,988.
portion and of such dimensions as to cover .those portions of the lock -casing 3 at the top and bottom of the latter, which project into the rabbet 2 of the door and to extend to and he ltlush with the walls of said rab- TO aZZ Awho/mI it may conccrn:
`Be it known that I, WVILLIAM R. HOYT, a oitizen of the United States, andresident of Stamford, in the eounty of Fairfield and .3 State of Connecticnt, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Lock Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable :u others skilled in the art to which it `appertans to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in lock structures and has particular reference to means for adapting an ordinary lock and a strike to doors or other relatively movable members having rabbeted meeting edges,-" one Object of the invention being to provide silnple means in the nature of a sheet metal auXiliary member whereby a lock casing having a flat front, such as a mortise lock casil'ig of ordinary construction, may be utilized in one door for a rabbeted locl{ without relnoving or changing the front of the ordinary lock casing, and to provide also a sheet metalV strike adaptable to the rabbeted portion of another door or member with Which the door carrying the lock cooperates.
lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure l is a perspective view showing a portion of a lock and my improved auxiliary lnelnbeythese parts being shown separated.
Figure 2 is a perspective view the parts assenbled, and
member covering-the side portion of v`the lock casing within the rabbet 2. The `auxiliary member 6 thus coversthat portion of .the lock casing 3 behind the front plate 4- .which projects into ltherabbet 2. The auxrespective ends, with vertically disposed ears S Which project'from one side edge of the body portion of said lnember and are disposed behind the ears 5 formecl by the upper and lower end portions of the front provided with suitable holes for the passage of fastening devices and the `ears 8 are similarly provided With holes 9 for the passage of said fasteningdevices,-tl1e auXiliary member 6 being thus seoured in place by the same fastening devices Which are utilized to secure the front: plate of the lock casing to the door. v
VVith the use of my improvement as above desoribed, a regular Straight front lock can be transformed into a rabbeted front lock without removing or changing the regular front, by the simple addition of the auxiliary member or facing plate 6. j
The other door or member with which the door l is to cooperate will be provided with a rabbetsimilar to the rabbet 2 shown in Figure 2 and receives a strike 10. This strike is, preferably made of sheet metal and provided with openings ll and'l?J to receive, respectively, the latch 13 and dead bolt 14: ofV the lock. The strike is provided along one edge with a flange 15 bent at right angles to the body portion land at the upper and: lower ends of said fiange, cars 16 are provided and project. from said fiange at right angles thereto. TV hen the doors are closed and the rabbeted portions thereof in- 'termeshed, the flange 15 of the strike will lie parallel with the body portion of the `auXiliary member 6 and the ears 16 will project Over and under respectively,V the upper and lower ears 7 of the member 6.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
` 1. A facing plate for a'rabbeted lock proshowing strike.
In Figure 2 of the drawings, a fragmental'y portion of a door 1 is shown as having a. rabbet 2. .A lock casing of the mortise type is represented at 3 and is somounted in the door as to project partially into the rabbet 2. The front plate Lt of the lock is flat and projects above and below the upper and lower edges of the lock casing so as to form ears 5.
In adapting an ordinary flat front lock to a rabbeted door, I employ an auXiliary member or lock front 6 which is preferably made of sheet meta-l having ears 7 at lits respective ends bent laterally from its body plate 4L. The ears 5 of the front plate 4 are' bet, tl1e body portion of said auxiliary iliary member 6 is provided at or lnear its i llO Yided 'at-itszuplper and lower zends-With ears` to lie parallel With thezinpperu` and lower edges of the lock, said facing plate also having ears adapted to be secured to the front' face Ofa lock.,
2. An auXiliary' facing 'plate'for a rabbeted lock consisting of sheet metal and-provided at its npper and lower ends With laterally projecting ea-rs" and-also provided With ears Which project laterally from a side edge of said. facing plate.`
3. TheoolnbinationzzWith a door `or 'support having a r'abbeted edge: and alock provided With a front plate,-l said look mounted in thedoor Or support *and having a portion entering the Vrabbet in-the same, of an auXiliary" faoing plate to lie. again'stthe exposed side face ofthe lock and providedwith ea-rs lying parallel With the top and bottom edge portions of the-lock and covering 'theeX- posed partsof 'the same, said auxlllaryfacingzplal'e also lprovided With rears secured to thezfrontp'late of the lock.
4. vIn a rabbeted lock structure, the colnbination With a door having' a rabbeted porton, andV a lo'ek lnonnted inV said-door and proJectlng into the rabbeted'portlon thereof, ofzlafaolng plate or member covering` the exposed top, bottom and side portions of the -zlock,;1neansfor-seouring said facing plate in place, and a 'strike adaptable to the rabbeted portion of another support and -comprising a body-,portion having openings, and a fiange' at right angles to one edge of said body portion.`
