PATENT OFFICE.
UNITED STATES FARRELL E. SUTHERLAND, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE FORTY-FIFTH TO MEDA F. OLAFFEY, 0F COLUMBUS, OHIO.
WINDOW-SASH LOCK.
Application filed July 29, 1925. Serial No. 46,908.
This invention relates to improvements in windowsash locks and has for an object the provision of a device of this character so constructed that it will permit the upper and lower sashes of a window to be interlocked when in a closed position, and whereby the respective sashes may be partially opened and locked without any fear of intruders being at liberty to undo the lock and open the window from the outside.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a lock that is extremely simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and easy to install, and one that is not apt to get out of order due to its few working parts.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts which will be fully set forth in the following description and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a window comprising the present invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 8 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2, and
Figure a is a perspective view of the lock.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates a window frame in which is mounted upper and lower shashes 2 and 3 respectively. The upper cross rail 4 of the lower window sash 3 being recessed at one end for the reception of a substantially U shaped plate 5 which is held in the recess by suitable fastening devices 6. Slidably mounted within grooves 7 formed in the opposed faces of the arms 8 of the plate 5 are ribs 9 of the locking bolt 10, there being a spring 12 disposed between the bight portion of the plate and the ad acent end of said bolt which serves to urge the bolt outwardly, the purpose of which will appear later.
The upper sash 3 has one of its vertical rails provided with a plurality of plates 13 having openings 14, and with which the bolt 18 selectively engaged. In order to disengage the bolt from its locked position the same is provided with a finger grip 15, in this instance the same being in the nature of an upstanding flange. The outer end of the bolt 9 may be equipped. with a rubber buffer 16 to prevent marring of the Woodwork as the sashes are operated.
As clearly shown in Figure 2 the bolt 9 is engaged in the opening 14 of one of the plates 13, thus firmly interlocking the respective sashes. To unlock the sashes it is only necessary to withdraw the bolt 9 from engagement with the plate. It will be obvious that the sashes can be locked in various positions due to the arrangement of the plates 13.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a window sash lock has been provided which is extremely simple in construction, durable, efiicient in operation and one which can not be opened by persons outside of the building.
WV hat is claimed is:
A sash fastener comprising a substantially U shaped plate adapted to be rigidly secured to the edge of a Window sash, the inner wall of the arm of said plate being provided with horizontal longitudinal extending grooves in the opposed faces thereof, a fiat locking plate slidably positioned between said arms and having the side walls thereof provided with laterally projecting ribs slidably received within said grooves, a spring between the stationary and movable plates and serving normally to project the latter in an outward direction, and a, manipulating projection provided upon the movable plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
