Description

(3. L. sTuBBs HOLDER Filed June 1'7 Patented May 12, 1925.
PATENT orric.
CLENDENON- L. STUBBS, OF HUNTINGTON PARK, CALIFORNIA.
HOLDER.
Application filed June 17, 1924. Serial No. 720,660.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLnNnnNoN L. STUBBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington Park, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improve ments in Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This 'nvention relates to certain improvements in holders and has relation more par- .ticularly to a device of this general character adapted to contain and display an identification card as required by many of the States in connection with motor driven vehicles, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which in addition to having means for properly maintaining the identification card for exposure is also provided with means to contain the drivers license or other articles as may be desired.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be readily mounted within the body of a -ve hicle and constructed in a manner whereby ready and convenient access may be had to the articles therein.
Furthermore it is an object of the inven tion to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising two parts one constituting a box body part and the other a cover part, said cover part be ing provided with means for holding and exposing an identification card, license or certificate of registration or the like while the box body part provides a compartment for containing the drivers license or other articles as may be desired.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved holder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and other wise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and with tlie I parts in closed relation;
Figure 2 is a view in perspective of the device as herein set forth with the cover part in open position;
Figure 8 is a fragmentary sectional view taken through the structure with the parts assembled as in Figure 1. I
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved holder comprises two parts A and B, the part A constituting a box body part and the part B constituting a cover part. The part A is of desired configuration and comprises a plate 1 of suitable material and configuration and which has its margins defined by the outstanding flanges 2. The plate 1 is provided with the openings 3 through which are adapted to be disposed screws or other headed members for maintaining the box body part A in applied position upon the interior wall of a vehicle body or other support.
One of the flanges 2 has its central portion cut away, as at 4, for a material distance therealong while the tree marginal portions of said flange at opposite sides of said cut away portion 4; are provided with the barrels or knuckles 5.
The cover part B comprises a body por tion 6 having a relatively large central opening 7 which is closed by a transparent sheet 8 and overlying the rear face of said sheet is a backing sheet 9, the identification card or the like is adapted to be inserted between the sheets 8 and 9 with the indicia thereon exposed through the central opening 7. The outer side and end margins of the body 6 are defined by the inwardly disposed flanges 10 which are adapted to overlap the flanges 2 of the box body part A when the cover part B is in closed position. The second side marginal portion of the body 6 is provided with the barrels or knuckles 11 adapted to snugly engage or fit within the cut out portion 4 of one of the flanges 2 of the part A and through which is adapted to be disposed a pintle or pivot rod 12, said rod being also directed through the barrels or knuckles 5. By this means the parts A and B are connected one to the other but capable of relative swinging movement.
The inner ends of the knuckles or barrole 11 are spaced apart and the marginal portion of the body 6 between said knuckles 11 is provided with an inwardly disposed lug or tongue 14: with which the adjacent marginal portions of the sheets 8 and 9 are adapted to-contaet whereby said sheets are maintained in applied position within the part B.
To further maintain the sheets 8 and 9 in applied position the side flanges 10 substantially midway thereof and at points in relatively close proximity to the body 6 have secured thereto the inwardly disposed flat springs the inner or free extremities of which terminating in close proximity one to the other.
lVhen the cover part B is in closed position a compartment is provided in the box body part A which is adapted to contain a drivers license or other articles not'required to be exposed through the cover part B but conveniently carried in connection therewith. This compartment if desired may also be employed to contain a mirror and vanity articles. t i I The parts A and B are provided with the coacting clasp members 16 of a well-known type adapted to coaet in a manner to maintain the cover part B in closed position yet readily and conveniently permitting said part B to be moved into open position when it is desired to have access withinrthe box body part A.
One of the flanges of the box body part A has secured thereto a suitable curved spring 17 so designed as to conveniently retain an identification card or matter 01" a similar character.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a holder constructed in accordance with myinvention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I'do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A holder of the class described comprising a box body part and a cover part, both of said parts having marginal flanges in overlapping relation when the cover part is applied to the box body part, said cover pa-rt being provided with an opening, a
transparent sheet within the cover part and disposed over said opening, a backing sheet overlying the transparent sheet, and means carried by the cover part for holding said sheets in applied position.
2. A holder of the class described comprising abox body part and a cover part,
both of said parts having marginal flanges in overlapping relation when the cover part is applied to the box body part, said cover part being provided with an opening, a transparent sheet within the cover part and disposed over said opening, a backing sheet overlying the transparentsheet, said cover part being provided adjacent a margin with an inwardly disposed lug coact-ing with the marginal portions of the sheets torhold-i-ng the same in applied position.
3. A holder of the class described comprising a box body part and a cover part, both of said parts having marginal flanges in overlapping relation when the cover part is applied to the box body part, said cover part being provided with an opening, a transparent sheet within the cover part and disposed over said opening, a backing sheet overlying the transparent sheet, spring arms arranged within the cover part for holding the sheets in applied position.
4:. A holder of the class described comprising a box body part and a cover part, both of said parts having marginal flanges in overlapping relation when the cover part is applied to the box body part, saidcover part being provided with an opening, a transparent sheet within the cover part and disposed over said opening, a backing sheet overlying the transparent sheet, spring arms arranged within the cover part for holding the sheets in applied position, said spring arms being carried by certain of the flanges of the coverpart.
In testimony whereof I hereunto a'fIix my signature.
