MEMORANDUM ATTACHMENT FOR AUTOMOBILES.

To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that I, HJALMER A. NELSON,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Becker and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Memorandum Attachments for Automobiles; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description 0 the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a-ppertainsto make and use the same. My invention has for its object to provide a memorandum attachment for automobiles, and to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which .illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

The numeral 7 indicates a casing having a main cover 8 hinged thereto at its upper edge. The bottom of the casing 7 is transa table 9, on the bottom of which is a clamp 10 adapted to be applied around one of the arms of an automobile steering wheel a The bottom of thecasing 7, at the longitudinal edges of its table 9, is arranged to engage the longitudinal edges of the steering wheel arm to which the casing 7 is applied and holds the same against annular turning movement. A. spring clip 11 holds the main .cover 8' closed. and thelongitudinal and bottom edges ofsaid cover are provided with depending flanges, within which the casing 7 fits to afford a tight joint therebetween.

In the main cover 8 is a sight opening 12, which directly overlies the table!) and is normally closed by a secondary cover 13 versely and intermediately raised to afford,

hinged'at its upper edge to said main cover.

On the lower edge of the secondary cover 13 is a finger piece 14, and secured to the main cover 8 is a pair of spring clips 15 located one on each .side of said finger piece and adapted to receive and hold a pencil B over the fingerpiece 14 and thereby lock the secondary cover 13 closed.

A- pair of rollers 16 are removably mounted in the casing 7, one on each side of the table 9. These rollers 16 have trunnions 17 journaled in seats formed in the sides of the casing7 and said seats, on the left-hand side of the casing, are open to permit the rollers 16 to be applied in a casing 7 or removed therefrom by compound axial and radial movement. Integrally formed with the trunnions 17, mounted in the open seats, are knurled finger pieces 18, by which the rollers 16 may be turned. Both rollers 16 are provided with longitudinal slots 19 to receive and hold the ends of astrip of paper 20 arranged to be unwound from one of said rollers and wound onto the other thereof. The intermediate portion of the strip of pa-per2O rests on the table 9 under the sight opening 12, where the same can be written on by means ofthe pencil B. Obviously, by turning one of the finger pieces 18, the strip of paper 20 may be unwound from one of the rollers and onto the other thereof and caused to move over the table 9 through the field of the sight opening 12.

Formed with the cover 8 are depending extensions 8', which.normally close the open seats for the trunnions 17 and hold the roll-' ers 16 in the casing 7. A pair of fiat springs 21 are secured to the other side of the main cover 8 and yieldingly press on the end portions of the paper strip 20 wound on the roller 16, and therebyyieldingly hold said the paper strip therefrom.

By the use of the attachment, the driver of an automobile may easily keep a record. from day to day, of his mileage, oil and gas. together with the dates-and money paid out. The driver may also make a note of other important matter. When the strip of paper 20 is filled up, the same may be removed and a new strip substituted therefor.

By placing the attachment on the steering wheel, the same is held in a convenient place, where the driver can write on the record sheet, and furthermore, it is a constant reminder to him to make the necessary memoably randum. The construction of the casing 7 and the mounting of the same, is such that it takes up very little room and projects only slightly above the arm of the steering wheel to which it is applied.

What I claim is:

1. A memorandum attachment for automobiles comprising a casing provided with a main cover having a sight opening, a secondary cover hinged to the main cover for the sight opening and having a finger piece, a pair of clips on the main cover adapted to receive and hold a pencil over said finger piece to lock the secondary cover closed, andsaid casing having means to support a recording sheet underlying the sight opening.

A memorandum attachment for automobiles comprising a casing provided with a cover having a sight opening, the bottom of-the cover being raised through its entire width at its central portion to afford a-table under the sight opening, and a clamp on the bottom of the table forsecuring the casing to one of the arms of a steering wheel, said table being arranged to support a recording sheet in the casing.

A memorandum attachment for automobiles comprising a casing provided with a displaceable cover having a sight opening, a pair of rollers having trunnions removjournaled in seats in the sides of the cas ng, the seats in one side of the casing being open to permit the rollers to be applied in the casing or removed therefrom by a compound axial and radial movement, extensions on the cover for closing said open seats and thereby locking the wherein the casing, whereby a strip of paper having its ends attached to the rollers and extending under the sight opening may be supported in said casing, and means for clamping said galsing to the steering wheel of an automo- 4. A memorandum attachment for automobiles comprising a casing provided with a displaceable cover having asightopening, a. air of rollers having trunnions removaby journaled in seats in the sides of the casing, the seats in one side of the casing beingopen to permit the rollers to be'applied in the casing or removed therefrom by a compound axial and radial movement, extensions on the .cover for closing said open seats and thereby locking the rollers in the casing, said rol'l'ers being provided with longitudinal slots, wherehya strip of paper having its ends inserted in the slots in the rollers and extending under the sight opening and means for clamping said casing to thesteering wheel of an automobile.

6. A memorandum attachment for auto-' mobiles comprising a casing having a portion formed as a paper supporting surface. and means beneath said portion for-attaching' the casing to the arms of an automobile steering wheel.

7. A memorandum attachment for automobiles comprising a casing-formed to extend at both, sides of the spoke of an automobile steering wheel and having a surface above the spoke on which a sheet of paper is supported, and means for clamping said casing to said spoke.

8. A memorandum attachment for an automobile comprising a casing, said casing having a portion thereof formed as' a supporting surface for. a sheet of paper, means for feeding a sheet of paper over said surface, and means beneath said portion for clamping the casing-to the spoke of an automobile wheel. k

A memorandum attachment for automobiles comprising a casing having its bottom side bent upwardly to form a paper supporting surface and to overlie the spoke of an automobile steering wheel, the casin extending downwardly at each side of said spokes, and. means for securing said casing to said spoke. v
