This invention relates to improvements in awning structures.
, The primary object of the invention is the provision of an awning structure in appearance altogether similar to that type of awning set forth in my copending application, Serial No. 512,555, filed Nov. 3, 1921, however, embodying improved supporting means and side panels.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a bracket member of relatively simple construction, capable of acting as a support for different parts of the-awning structure.
A further object of theinvention is the provision of anawning structure embodying sidepanels, and novel means for the support thereof.
Other objects andadvantages willbe ap parent during the course of the following detailed description.

The'structure B may'of course, be utilized in connection with any building opening, but ordinarily will find its most extensive use in connection with window openings.
Window constructions vary somewhat,
but for the purposes of this invention it is suiiicient that the window construction embody a casing 10; window members 11; a shade element 12; and sill 13. The improved awning structure B preferably comprises a frame 17 framebrackets 18; main awning portion or cover 19; side pieces 20; awning brackets 21; and hood member 22.
The awning structure B may be 'positioned either interiorly or exteriorly of the room in which the window structure A is disposed, as has ben fully set forth in my copending application, Serial No. 512,555, filed Nov. 3, 1921. For purposes of illustration, the improved awning structure "B has been shown as disposed upon the outside strips 25.
The frame 17 isadjustable, and substantially of that type illustrated. in the copending application above mentioned. This frame includes the hollow side arms 27 connected forwardly by a bar portion 28, and having the rodmembers 28 slidably mounted therein. The rod members 28 are pro vided upon'their free ends with an eyeportion 29, adapted for pivotalattachment to the bracket structures 18, so that the frame 17 may "be pivotally connected to the outside strips '25 adjacent the sill 13. The side arms 27 and the forward connecting portion 28 may be adjusted upon the pivoted barportions 28"and clamped in anydetermined position thereon by means of the set screws 30. y Y
The brackets 18 are of such construction that the frame 17 may be connected to the window construction A in the best possible 'manner. The same each includes the body portion 31 having the ears 32; extending therefrom for receiving screw elements 33, whereby a boss 3-1 having a screw threaded socket 35 therein may extend propermannor from the strip25 for adjujstably receiving the screw member 36.- Tliis screw mem iii ber 36 includes a screw threaded shank 37 adapted for adjustable insertion in the socket 35; a head portion 38; and an intermediate bearing shoulder 39, which is of less cross section than the head 38 and greatercross section than the screw threaded shank 37, whereby when the eye 29 of the frame rod 28 is positioned to receive the bearing shoulder 39 therein, the shank 37 may be adjusted in its aperture 35, so that the frame 17 may be pivotally connected to the window construction A.
Referring to the awning brackets 21, each are preferably formed of a single piece of sheet material stamped to provide a fiat body portion 12 of irregular formation, having the attaching openings 43 therein for receiving screws 45, and whereby said bracket 21 may be attached to a support. A flange portion 46 is struck outwardly upon one end of the body 42, at right angles thereto, and has a head 47 provided thereon bent at right angles to the flange 416 and parallel to the plane defined by the attaching body 12. The head 17 of one bracket is provided with a bayonet slot 18 and the head of a cooperating bracket will be provided with a circular opening so that an ordinary spring roller 50 may be mounted in the usual manner. An end portion 51 is bent at an obtuse angle to the plane defined by the attaching body 4-2 and disposed upon an end thereof remote from the head 47; said portion 51 being provided with an aperture 52 therein for receiving a fastener element 53, which will be subsequently described in detail. As is illustrated in Figure 3, the attaching body 12 of each of the brackets 11 is so secured to the strip 25 as to have the portions 4:? and 51 thereof extending outwardly from the outer surface of said strip 25. 'When in this position, the spring roller 50 may be attached at one end in the bayonet slot 18, and at its other end in an aperture 49 of a pair of oppositely positioned brackets 21, much in the same manner as an ordinary curtain roller is suspended.
The cover or main body 19 of the awning structure B is secured to the forward frame portion 28 and to the spring roller 50, altogether similar to the manner described in detail in my co-pending application above identified, so that when the frame 17 is folded into the casing of the window construction, said cover 19 may be compactly wound about the roller 50.
The side panels 20 have been provided, in order to cooperate with the awning structure above described. They are each preferably right angled triangular in formation and connected acent one marginal edge thereof by strands 60, which are carried thereby, to hook members 61 which are positioned upon the side arms 27 of the frame 17 The hypothenuse edge of the side curtains 20 extends along the main portion 19 of the awning structure 13, while the other marginal edge of each of said side pieces is disposed adjacent the casing strip 25, so that an apex 62 of each of the side curtains 20 extend adjacent the awning brackets 21.
The manner in which this upper portion 62 of a side curtain 20 is supported is of greatest importance, so that the same may be maintained in taut manner to serve effectively with the cover portion 19. To this end, a strip of elastic material 65 is stitched, as at 66 to the inside surface of each of the side curtains 20, so that an opposite end of such strip may extend outwardly of the apex portion 22 upon said side curtain. In order that the strip 65 may maintain a proper relation at all times, a flexible piece 68 is stitched to the inside surface of each of the curtains 20, to provide a pocket through which said strip 65 extends. The strip 65 may be of any approved material, but is preferably of some durable material, such as fabric covered rubber. The fastener 53, utilized in connection with attaching of the strip 65 to its adjacent awning bracket 21, is preferably formed of wire material, bent intermediate its ends to provide a spring loop 69, of a double thickness of the wire; said fastener having the relatively straight portions 70 and 71 extending from the loop 69 in diverging relation and terminating in prongs T2. The bight portion 73 is formed by the bending of the wire upon itself, so that the loop 69 may have the portion adjacent the bightend 73 resting against the proximate ends of the portions 70 and 71, to complete the loop 69. As is readily understood, the loop 69 is snapped through the aperture 52 of the bracket 21, so that the prongs 72 thereof may be inserted and bent for secure attachment to the free end of an elastic strip 65.
The hood 22 is provided in horizontal manner between the strips 25 of the window construction A, extending immediately over the awning brackets 21 and the roller member 50, for protecting the same, substantially as is more fully described in my copending application above indentified.
hen the awning structure B is lowered, as is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, the cover portion 19 thereof will be drawn taut as is obvious. Similarly, the side pieces 20 will be drawn taut, due to the fact that the arms 27 of the frame 17 are lowered so that the strips 65 are placed under a tension. In folding the improved awning structure B, the side pieces may or may not be detached, since they in no sense interfere with the winding of the cover 19 upon the spring roller 15.
Various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a bracket for awning structures formed of sheet metal bent to provide an intermediate attaching portion, a flange extending laterally from said attaching portion and a roller receiving portion carried by said flange and extending forwardly therefrom in a plane parallel to the plane of said attaching portion, and an article receiving ear extending at an incline downwardly and rearwardly from said attaching portion on the opposite side thereof from said roller receiving portion.
2. As an article of manufacture, a bracket for awning structures formed of sheet material bent to provide a flat attaching portion having a series of apertures therethrough, a flange extending outwardly from one edge of said attaching portion lying in plane at right angles thereto, a flat head portion provided with a roller pintle receiving socket therein connected upon the end of said flange to extend outwardly from the attaching portion although lying in a plane parallel therewith, and a tail portion formed upon said attaching portion having an aperture therethrough and lying in a plane at an obtuse angle with respect to the plane defined by said attaching portion.
3. A device of the class described comprising a U-shaped frame, a cover strip having its outer end secured to the outer end of the Ushaped frame, substantially triangular shaped pieces having their lower ends connected along the side arms of the frame and extending upwardly therefrom, and elastic means for securing the upper ends of said side pieces to permanent supporting means whereby they may be drawn taut when the frame is in an extended position.
4. In an awning structure, the combination with a window casing, of a frame pivotally connected thereto, bracket members mounted upon said casing at a point remote from the connection of said frame thereto, a member supported by said brackets, a cover connected to the forward end of said frame and attached to said member, awning side panels connected to the side portions of said frame and extending upwardly along said cover to have an end thereof adjacent said brackets, an elastic tab upon the ends of the side pieces adjacent said brackets, and snap fastener means connected to said elastic tabs for attachment to said bracket whereby the side panels may be supported in taut relation from said frame.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a window casing, of a frame structure pivotally connected thereto of extensible nature to extend outwardly therefrom, said frame including a forward portion and side arms brackets mounted to said casing upwardly from the pivotal connection of the frame therewith, a spring roller member supported by said brackets, an awning cover portion wound about said spring roller and connected to the forward portion of the frame, awning side pieces detachably connected to the side arms of said frame to extend upwardly therefrom, and attaching means for the ends of said side pieces remote from their connection with the frame including elastic strips and snap fasteners secured upon the upper ends thereof for engaging said brackets mounted upon the casing, whereby when the awning structure is extended in open manner, the side pieces may be drawn upwardly in taut manner upon said frame.
