Application filed May 16,1923. fierial No. 639,381.
To all til/107R it may concern:
Be it known that l[, JOHNA. Donna. a
which the'tollowing is a'full, clear, and cX- act description This invention has relation to receptacles and has particular .retereme to a receptacle tor cigars, cigarettes, matches, ashes or the like. which is designed for use by smokers.
The outstanding object of the present invention is to provide a receptacleof the character set forth which affords an upper initial receiving compartment into which the ashes matches and cigars and cigarette stumps are initially deposited and from which the same may be; readily discharged into a lower compartment by manually operated means and. in which lower compartment an' extinguishing, medium is arranged for dousing lighted stumps or matches to prevent smoldering and disagreeable odors resulting therefrom. As a further object the invention contem-- plates a smokers receptacle which maybe readily emptied and cleansed after use. whereby to render the same sanitary and neat in appearance. 7
The invention furthermore contemplates a recepta le which is extremely simple in its construction and mode of operation, inexpensive to manufacture and which is highly efiicient in its purpose.
With the above recited and other objects in View, the" invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the 1 full extent. indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed. i
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the same illustrating respect-ivelyin full lines ing and discharging position.
Fig. 2 is a plan view with parts broken away and shown in section to disclose the underlying structure.
the upper receiving compartment in reoeiv- Fig. 3 is a tragu'lcntary detail sectional view taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig, 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side view.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the receptacle comprises a body 1 which is formed with fi'QOliStIlttQtl portlon 11 intermediate of its height which divides. the same into an upper bowl shaped end 12 and a lower hollow base 153 closed by a bottom wall let in which "water or other suitable extinguishing liquid 15 is arranged. The shape of the body is such that the accidental over-turning of the same, on its SlCl Wlll pref-ludethe possible discharge of the water or liquid 15 therefr'on'i dueto the constricted portion 11. An open ended annular or ring shaped member 16 having an outturned marginal flange 17 at its upper end is designed to snugly fit within the-upper open end of the bowl shaped portion of the. body 10. A transverse hinge pin 18 projects through diametrically opposite points of the member 16 and the projecting extremities 19 thereof are designed in the upper end of the portion 12 of the body for detachably associating the member 14 with the body to prevent its accidental displacement. A pair of. leaf members-21 having inter-fitting hinged knuckles 22 through which the hinge pin 18 extends are thereby attached to the member 16 and are forced through the medium of springs 23 to a normal horizontal position whereby to constitute a bottom for-the member 16 to dofine therewith an upper initial receiving compartment 24 within which ashes, matches, cigar and cigarette stumps are received. The'upper flanged edgel? of the member 16 has preferably secured thereon cigar or cigarette, rests 25. At'the transverse center of the leaves 21 a cutaway portion 26 is provided to accommodate the upwardly offset central portion 27 of the hinge pin 18. The bight 28 of-th'e ofiset portion 27 is centrally apertured as at 29 to constitute a bearing through which a vertically disposed shaft 30 extends. The lower end 'of the shaft which extends below the cutaway portions 26 is provided with a head 31 and has pivoted-to opposite sides thereof as at 32- links 33 which arein turn pivoted .as at '34: to the under side of the leaves 21..
to engage within bayonet slots 20 formed The upper end of the shaft 30 is provided with an enlarged manipulating head or buttOn 35. In use and operation of the device the discarded articles which are received by the upper compartment 24 may be readily discharged into the body of the receptacle by-adownward pressure exerted on the button or head of the shaft 30. This downward movement of the shaft effects a downward and inward'swinging of the leaves 21 against action of the springs 23, as illustrated indotted lines in Figure 1. Lighted or smoldering cigar and cigarette butts, matches, ashes or particles of tobacco will drop-into the water or other extinguishing liquid disposed within the bottom portion or base13 of the body to douse the same, while the leaves 21 will be returned to their nor-' mal horizontal position by the springs23 as soon as the pressure is removed from the shaft 30. To empty the receptacle body 10, the member 16 is rotated with respect thereto until the extremities 19 of the hinge pin maybe disengaged from the bayonet slots 20 by an outward pull on the member 16, after which the contents of the receptacle may be readily dumped or discharged, while the member '16 and component parts may be cleansed.
I claim:
1. A smokers receptacle comprising a substantially cup shaped body within the lower end of which a liquid dousing medium is contained, a tray member removably fitted within the upper open end and constituting an initial receiver for smoking refuse, said tray member comprising an annular wall having a marginal outwardly pro ect1ng head at its upp r end, a transverse pivot shaft carried by the lower end of the an- .nula'r wall, a pair ofsemi-circular bottom lower end of which a liquid dousing medium is contained, a tray member removably fitted tray member comprising an annular wall having a marginal outwardly projecting bead at its upper end, a transverse pivot I shaft carried by the lower end of the an nular wall, a pair of semi-circular bottom .wall sections hingedly connected .to the pivot shaft, said pivot shafthaving a central upstanding apertured bearing, a vertical plunger shaft mounted in said bearing, a linked connection between the undersides of the bottom wall sections and the lower end. of the plunger shaft and springs carried by the pivot shaft and connected with 'said bottom wall sections for normally movlower end of which a liquid dousing medium is contained, a tray member removably fitted within the upper open end and constituting an initial receiver for smoking refuse, said tray member comprising an annular wall having a marginal outwardly projecting bead at its upper end, atransverse pivot shaft carried by the lower end of the annular wall, a pair of semi-circular bottom wall sections hingedly connected to the pivot shaft, said pivot shaft having a central up standing apertured bearing, a vertical plunger shaft mounted in said bearing, a linked connection between the nndersides of the bottom wall sections and the lower end of the plunger shaft and springs carried by the pivot shaft and connected with said bottom wall sections for normally moving the same to a horizontal plane to define the bottom of the initial receiver, the upper edge of the cup shaped body having bayonet slots at diametrically opposite points and the pivot shaft terminals extending radially from the annular wall of the tray member for engagementwithin the bayonet slots to constitute means for locking thetray member in associated'relation with the body, the said body having an annular constricted portion in its side wall constituting means for preventing the spilling of the liquid dousing medium in event of accidental overturning of the receptacle.
within the upper open end and constituting an initial receiver for smoking refuse, said JOHN A. DOLAN.
