To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SMITH A. How, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rices Landing, in the county of Green and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer-' tain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful sanitary improvements for receptacles, and while the adaptation of the improvement is illustrated, described, and primarily designed as embodied in closet bowls, it will be obvious that the application of the improvement may be successfully associated in many other receptacles for analogous purposes wherein it is found to be applicable.

Important objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character described, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which will establish a draught for dissipating offensive fumes and odors emanating from the closet bowl; which will function during the flushing operation of the bowl; which may be embodied in a closet bowl, and which provides a hygienic appliance designed for the promotion of health.

l With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in. the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the principle of the invention.

Referring in detail to the drawing, 1 denotes a closet bowl, of the siphon type, provided with a hinged seat member 2 and con nected with a flush tank 3 of the ordinary operative construction. The usual vertically disposed vent pipe 4 is positioned in the i chamber wall 5 in rear of the closet bowl.

The closet bowl 1 is provided with the usual brim roll 6 forming the passage 7, which latter communicates with the tank 3 through the conductor pipe 8. The inner preferably disposed intermediate of adjacent outlet ports 9 and is constructedwith a vertically disposed elongated hollow neck 11, formed integral with the brim roll 6, and extending upwardly into the passsage 7. The neck 11 terminates in close proximity to the top of the roll, leaving a clearance 12 therebetween for the purpose presently described. This construction is clearly illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawing.

A substantially U-shaped conduit 13, and conductor pipe 14, connects the passage 7 in the brim roll 6 with the vent pipe 4. The forward ends of the parallel arms of the conduit 13 are attached at the rear of the brim roll 6, as indicated at 15, and com municate with the passage 7 near the top thereof. The rear ends of the arms of the conduit 13 are connected by an enlarged hollow cross member or sleeve 16 which latter communicates at its rear side with one endof the conductor pipe 14. The other end of the conductor pipe 14 is attached to and communicates with the vent pipe 4.

The conductor pipe 14 together with the U-shaped conduit 13 are positioned to incline upwardly at their rear ends, as clearly shown in Figure 1, of the drawing, to prevent the back flow of the water therein during the flushing operation of the closet bowl 1. i A heating element 17 preferably compris-. ing an electric heating unit is fixed in the sleeve 16 for the purpose of creating a draught through the vent pipe 4. thereby drawing the obnoxious exhalations and fumes from the closet bowl 1 through the ports 9 and 10, passage 7 in the brim roll 6, the U-shaped conduit 13, conductor pipe 14, after which same are dissipated through the vent pipe 4. If desired, any other suitable heating element -may be employed for the purpose described.

During the flushing operation of the closet bowl 1 the drawing action of my improved device is confined to the inlet ports 10 through necks 11, which latter extend to a sufiicient height in the passage 7 to prevent their closure by the water during the flushing operation. Normally, however, the drawing action of the device functions through both the inlet ports 10 and outlet ports 9.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accom-panying drawing, the advantages of the construction and the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while describing the principle of operation of the invention together wit-h the device which is new considered to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that the de vice shown is merely illustrative and that various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

The combination with a closet bowl formed with a. hollow brim roll constituting a flushing water supply passage for the bowl, said roll having its bottom provided with water outlets, a water feed pipe leading to said passage, and an air discharge, means leading from said passage, of a plurality of vertically disposed hollow necks integral with and opel'iing through the bot-, tom of said passage and further terminating at their upper ends at a point in proximity to the top of said passage.

2. The combination with a closet bowl formed with a hollow brim roll constituting a flushing water supply passage for the bowl, said roll having its bottom provided with water out-lets, a water feed pipe leading ll to said passage, and an air discharge, means leading from said passage, of a plurality of vertically disposed hollow necks integral with and opening through the bottom of said passage and further terminating at their upper ends at a: point in proximity to the top of said passage, and each of said necks positioned between a-pair of water outlets.

In a sanitary receptacle of the class referred to a body portion formed with a brim roll constituting a flushing water supply passage formed with a water mlet means, air outlet means, and a plurality of water outlets, said water outlets arranged at the lower portion of said passage, a plurality of vertically disposed hollow necks integral with and opening through the bot tom of said passage and further terminating at their upper ends at a point in proximity to the top of said passage and constituting air conduits opening into said passage.

In a sanitary receptacle of the class referred to a body portion formed with a brim roll constituting a flushing water supply passage formed with a water inlet means, air out-let means, and a plurality of water outlets, said water outlets arranged at the lower portion of said passage, a plurality of vertically disposed hollow necks integral with and opening through the bottom of said passage and further terminating at their upper ends at a point in proximity to the top of said passage and constituting air conduits opening into said passage, and each of said necks positioned between a pair of water outlets.

5. A sanitary receptacle comprising a. body portion formed on its inner face with a hollow, brim roll constituting a flushing water supply passage, provided with a water inlet and an air outlet, said roll having openings forming water outlets leading from and air inlets leading to said passage, and a series of vertically disposed hollow necks arranged within and integral with the bottom of said passage, said necks opening through the bottom of said roll and having their upper ends terminating in close proximity to the top of said passage, said necks forming air inlet conduits leading into said passage, and independent of said openings.

6. A sanitar' receptacle comprising a body portion formed on its inner face with a hollow brim roll constituting a flushing water supply passage, provided with a water inlet and an air. outlet, said roll having openings forming water outlets leading from and air inlets leading to said passage, and a series of. vertically disposed hollow necks arranged within and integral with the bottom of said passage, said necks opening through the bottom of said roll and having their upper ends terminating in close proximity to the top of said passage, said necks forming air inlet conduits leading into said passage, independent of said openings, and means within said air outlet to facilitate the passage of air through said passage from said body portion.
