This mechanism comprises a shaft 41 parallel to the side frames 10 and rotatably supported thereby. This shaft carries a counterweighte'd by a counter weight 41 that if'the end of the bell-crank is moved out of the path of the shoulder 45, the shaft 41 turns to bring its mutilated gear wheel 1-2 into engagement with the worm 43. Further rotation of the shaft 11 by gear 4-2 and worm 43 brings the roller 16 on the end of bell-crank 31 into engagement with one side or other of the enlarged part 47 of the cam 44 depending upon the direction the bellcrank has been moved by the cams 37.
This cam portion 17 completes the movement of the bell-crank 31 necessary to operate the lever 29 and thereby move the bellcrank 26 to bring the other clutch int-o en- In order to hold the bell-crank 31 in engagement with the shoulder 15 until the automatic clutch operating mechanism comes into play, the bell-crank is apertured for the passage of a bolt 48 having springs 49 thereon arranged one on each side of the bell-crank. These springs bear against washers 50 adapted to engage the frame of the hoist as well as the bell-crank, as shown in Figure 7, so that the latter is yieldingly held in neutral position.
- In addition to providing both manual and automatic means for operating the clutches, the hoist is also constructed so that the mechanism will always be ready instantly to lock the mechanism in case of damage or breakage so as to prevent the accidental lowering of the load. This lock also automatically comes into operation whenever the drum is released from the driving shaft and the drum commences to run away.
This locking mechanism comprises a toothed wheel 51 bolted to one end of the drum 22 and provided with a peripheral shoulder or rim 52. Upon this shoulder rides a shoe 53, as shown in Figure 3, loosely pivotally connected at 5 1 to a lever rotatably mounted on a shaft 56. This lever is provided with two laterally extending arms 57 within which are slidably mounted dogs 58. As the drum rotates in the direction of the arrow, Figure 3, the friction between the shoe 53 and the shoulder 52 tends to carry the shoe around with the drum. This movement swings the lever 55 to the left and thereby simultaneously lifts the right hand dog into engagement with one of the teeth on the wheel 51 and locks it against further rotation in that direction. If the drum were rotating in the opposite direction the left-hand dog would be brought into operation. The shock of the blow of the teeth of the wheel 51 upon the dogs is preferably cushioned in any convenient way, such as by inserting rubber blocks in the bottom of the apertures in the arms 57 which receive the dogs 58. The latter may .he prevented from turning in the arms 57 by pins 60 which move in slots in the arms.
Such an arrangement as above described would prevent all operation of the hoist and hence means are provided for preventing the operation of the lock except when the drum commences to turn in a direction opposite to that intended. For this purpose a quadrantal member 61 attached to the shaft 56 is adapted to engage shoulders 62 on the arms 57 and so restrict the range of move ment of the latter. With the member 61 in the position shown in Figure 3 the right hand dog 58 cannot engage the teeth of the wheel 51 but should the direction of rotation reverse the left-hand dog 53 is free to move into engagement with the wheel 51.
The angular position of the shaft 56 and thereby that of the member 61 is controlled by means of a plate 63 having one end pivotally connected at 641 to an arm 65 secured to the shaft 56. The other end of the plate is arranged to overlap the lever 29 and is formed with slots 66 and 67 (Figure 5) for the passage of the ends of the bell-cranks 2G and 31 respectively. The slot 66 is of such length that the lever 29 may move the bell crank 26 from either clutch engaging position into neutral without moving the plate 63. Should, however, the lever be moved further to bring the other clutch into engagement, the plate 63 will be moved and thereby turn the shaft 56 and member (31 so as to allow the drum to rotate in the desired direction while leaving the locking device free to operate whenever the drum turns in the opposite direction.
The slot 67 is longer than the slot 66 so that the plate 63 may be moved by the bellcrank 26 from one clutch-engaging position to the other without moving the bell-crank 31. The slot has recesses along its upper side at each end to enable the bell-crank 31 releasably to hold the plate 63 in one or other clutch engaging positions.
The bell-crank 2G is connected to the lever 29 so that the latter cannot move without operating the bell-crank. This is not the case wit-h the. other bellecrank 3 1 the end of which cxtendsthrough a slot 32in the lever long enough to allow the latter to move not only into. neutral but also into either clutch engaging position without operating the belLcrank 31. In other words the bellcrank 31 may operatethe lever 29 but the lever cannot operate the bell. crank.
Although the dogs 58 are cushioned the shock of stopping the drum is very great so that the teeth and other parts. of" the.
wheel 51 are apt to break. For this reason the wheel 51 is not made integral with the drum so that in the eventof breakage the wheel only need be replaced.
Similarly the gear 21 on the drum shaft is made separate from the drum to allow ready replacement in case ofbreakage of teeth, etc. This gear is operatively connected to the drum 22 and the toothed wheel 51 by means of arod ?0 adapted to slide in an aperture in the wheel 51 and enter an aperture in the gear 22. The end of the screw is threaded in the drum. The axial position of this, rod may be adjusted by means of a handwheel 71. hen the rod is disengaged the machine may be used as a source of power for driving car puller or the like.
For the same reason the bearings which support the shaft 56 are made separable from the frame. The center bearing 68 also constructed so that its two halves are pressed towards the shaft 56 by springs 69 to exert a braking action upon the shaft which aids in holding the quadrantal member 61 in adjusted position.
I am aware that many changes may be made, and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range with out departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon, other wise than necessitated by the prior art.

A hoist including in combination a drum, a shaft carrying said drum, double clutch operated reversible gear for driving said drum, an arm operating said clutches, a toothed wheel detachably secured to said drum, a rocker shaft, safety locking mechanism on said rocker shaft adapted to cooperate with said toothed wheel, a crank arm on said rocker shaft and a link pivoted to the crank arm having slot connection with said clutch operating arm, the length of such slot being sufiicient to allow the clutcharm to move into neutral without moving the link while insufiicient to'allow the clutch arm to move from one clutch engaging position to the other without moving said link.

A hoist including; in combination a frame, a shaft journaled in said frame, a drum mounted on said shaft, double clutch operated reversible gear for driving, said. drum, an arm operating said clutches, a toothed wheel connected 'to said drum, a rocker shaft, safety locking mechanism on said rocker shaft adapted to co-operate with,
saidtoothed wheel, bearings. for said rocker shaft detachably connected to said frame, a crank arm on said rocker shaft and a link connection between said crank arm and said clutch operating arm adapted to operate the safety locking mechanism as the clutch operating arm moves from one clutch engag ing position to the other. i
A hoist including in combination a drum, a shaft carrying said drum, double clutch operated reversible gear for driving said drum, an arm operating. said clutches, a toothed wheel detachably secured to said drum, a rocker shaft, a pair of oppo sitely extending dogs rotatably mounted on said rocker shaftadapted to'engage alternatively with said toothed wheel, friction means co-operating with said toothed wheel adapted to throw one or other of said dogs into engagement, and means on said rocker shaft for withholding the operation of said friction means while the drum is rotating in the desired direction.

A hoist including in combination a drum, a shaft carrying said dru1n, donble clutch operated reversible gear for driving said drum, an arm operating saidclutches, a toothed wheel detachably secured to said drum, a. rocker shaft, a pair of oppositely extending dogs rotatably mounted on said rocker shaft adapted to engage alternatively with said toothed wheel, friction means cooperating with said toothed wheel adapted to throw one or other of said dogs into engagement, and means on said rocker shaft for withholding the operation of said friction means while the drum is-rotating in the desired direction, said withholding means being operated by movement of the clutch operating arm.

A hoist including in combination a drum, a shaft carrying said drum, double clutch operated reversible gear for driving said drum, an arm operating said clutches, a toothed wheel detachably secured to said drum, a rocker shaft, a pair of oppositely extending dogs rotatably mounted on said rocker shaft adapted to engage alternatively with said toothed wheel, friction meanscooperating with said toothed wheel adapted to throw one or other of said dogs into engagen'ient, a stop member secured to said rocker shaft adapted in one angular position to prevent one of said dogs engaging said wheel and in another position the other of said dogs, and a crank arm on said rocker shaft for turning the latter.

A hoist including in combination a drum, a shaft carrying said drum, double clutch operated reversible gear for driving said drum, an arm operating said clutches, a toothed wheel detachably secured to said drum, a rocker shaft, a pair of oppositely extending dogs rotatably mounted on said rocker shaft adapted to engage alternatively with said toothed wheel, friction means cooperating with said toothed wheel adapted to throw one or other of said dogs into engagement, a stop member secured to said rocker shaft adapted in one angular position to prevent one of said dogs engaging said wheel and in another position the other of said dogs, a crank arm on said rocker shaftfor turning the latter, and a link pivoted to the crank arm having slot con nection with said clutch operating arm, the length of such slot being suiiicient to allow the clutch arm to move into neutral without moving the link while insullicient to allow the clutch arm to move from one clutch engaging position to the other without moving said link.

A hoist including a frame, a shaft journalled in said frame, a di n mounted on said shaft, double clutch operated reversible gearing for driving said drum, an arm for operating said clutches, a toothed wheel connected to said drum, a rocker shaft, safety dogs loosely mounted on said shaft for cooperation with said toothed wheel, bearings for said rocker detachahly connected to said frame, a crank" on said rocker shaft and a connection between said arm and crank adapted for throwing said dogs to neutral position at the limits of movement of said crank.

A hoist including a drum, a shaft carrying said drum, double clutch o erated gearing for driving said drum, an arm for operating said clutches, a toothed wheel detachably secured to said drum, a rocker shaft, a pair of oppositely extending d r rocker shaft, dogs rotatably mounted on said rock shaft for engaging said lockingwheel, means including shiftahle clutches for rotating said drum in either direction, an arm for shifting said clutches, a lever eonnected with said arm, a connection betwe .u said lever androcker shaft and a device .eeured to said rocker shaft adapted for shifting said dogs to neutral at the limits of movement of said connection.
