UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
AMZI J. DEAN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GEORGE D. DEAN, OF'SAME PLACE.
lMPROV EMENT IN INDIA-RUBBER HORSESHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 52,975, dated July 14, 1874 application filed March 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMZI J. DEAN, of Newark, Essex county, NewJersey, have invented a new and Improved India Rubber Horseshoe, of which the following is a specification The invention relates to rubber horseshoes; and consists in an improved construction thereof, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my improved india-rubber shoe and a horses foot, illustrating my invention and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of Fig. 1 through the middle from front to rear.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the bottom or sole of the shoe; B, the upper, and O the portion thereof stretchllg over the quarters D into the cavity E of the ankle above thefoot. The soleis preferably recessed in the middle portion a little, asrepresented at F, and at the heel the thicker portions may be still further thickened, as at G, in the form of calks. The same may also be done at the toe, if preferred.
I have, by practical use of these shoes, found no difficulty whatever in making molded shoes with uppers sufficiently light, flexible,
and elastic to stretch on and off readily, and yet be capable of holding on snug and tight and, in respect of durability, I have found a considerable economy as compared with iron shoes, even when an inferior quality of rubber has been used.
l propose to combine clay with the bottom portion, for hardening them, to increase their durability.
These shoes can be so readily put on and taken 011' that they may be always removed when the horse is put in the stable, to allow him to stand on his natural feet.
The advantages of a shoe that dispenses with the nailing to the hoof are too well understood to need remark.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A rubber horseshoe having an upper, B, extending to the ankle, and drawn in on the rear part 0 to overlap the heel D, in the manner described, and thus render fastening devices entirely unnecessary.
- AMZI J. DEAN.
