UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM CAIN, or PERTH, CANADA.
OVERBOOT FOR HORSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,564, dated November 16, 1897.
Application filed October 8, 1896- Serial No. 608,283. (No model.)
To all whom, it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM CAIN, V. S., a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Perth, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Horse-Boot, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boots for horses; and it has for its object to provide a simple and improved boot of this class which will effectively hold and retain oil or water and which will be especially adapted for convenient application and use in the treatment of diseases of horses feet and ankles.
The ordinary horse-boots constructed of leather or the like are not adapted to hold liquid or medicaments in the treatment of diseases of horses feet, and my invention is designed to provide a simple and effective device for accomplishing this purpose.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved horse-boot. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the bottom. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal sectional view taken on the line 1 1, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical sectional view showing the boot arranged for use in conjunction with calked shoes.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the boot, which comprises a bottom, foot, and
I ankle portion a and'a top or leg portion a.
The boot is preferably formed in its entirety of an indurated fibrous composition. boot may be seamless and molded in a single piece, or it may be seamed, as desired. I pre fer to mold the boot ina single piece, without seams, of any suitable fibrous composition, indurated and adapted to contain oil, water, or other liquid medicaments. In like manner the boot may be molded of aluminium or any other suitable or adapted material.
The bottom portion a of the boot conforms in contour and shape to the hoof and ankle of the animal, while the top portion is of ordinary cylindrical shape to conform to the leg below the knee.
The boot is molded with a bottom I) and is provided with aflat sole of suitable thickness inside and outside, as shown at s and 3, respectively. At the top of the leg portion ct suitable devices are provided for securely at- The taching the'boot to the horses leg. These devices are preferably straps, comprising two vertically-projecting straps d d, at opposite sides, secured to the top edge of the leg portion a, and carryinga horizontally-arranged circular strap d, adapted to embrace the horses leg.
Interiorly the boot corresponds to the shape and contour of the'hoof and ankle, and by reason of its improved construction and general arrangement it is adapted to hold and contain oil, warm water, or other liquid medicament and retain the same in direct contact with the affected parts, While the boot is socured in position, in the treatment of sore or contracted feet, sore ankles, scratches, and other diseases and ailments of horses feet and ankles. The lotion or medicament is poured into the boot up to the plane of the ankle, and is effectually retained by the boot for any desired length of time, and when the boot is molded of an indurated fibrous composition. the medicament will work well into the structure.
The application of a medicament by having the same contained in a boot vessel while se-.
cured upon the horses foot is the most effective manner of treating ailments of the feet and ankles, and my improved boot is designed by reason of its improved construction and general arrangement to provide a simple, durable, and convenient device for this purpose which cannot be thrown ofi by the horse.
The boot is pulled on over the shod foot of the horse, and in case of a fiat shoe the insole s will obviate any damage to the boot structure. For use in conjunction with shoes having sharp calks I provide a removable sole 0, preferably formed of leather and adapted to 1. An improved horse-boot for containing a liquid medicament, comprising the boot proper molded or formed of an indurated be set in the boot to prevent cutting of the 4 fibrous composition or other adapted material and embodying the bottom portion conforming approximately in contour or shape to the foot and ankle of the animal and the extended top portion conforming to the leg of the animal, said conforming bottom portion and extended top portion being both seamless, the boot being provided with devices for securing it in position and with theflat inside and outside soles at the bottom, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An improved horse-boot for containing a liquid medicament, comprising the boot proper molded or formed of an ind urated fibrous composition or other adapted material and embodying the bottom portion a conforming approximately in contour or shape to the foot and ankle of the animal and the extended top portion a conforming to the leg of the animal, both said bottom portion and said extended top portion being seamless and the extended seamless top portion being provided at the top with the Vertically-projecting straps d d carrying the horizontally-arranged circular strap (1, and the bottom portion ahaving the inside and outside soles s and s, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. An improved horse-boot for containing a liquid medicament, comprising the boot proper molded or formed of an indurated fibrous composition or other adapted material and embodying the bottom portion approximalely conforming to the foot and ankle of the animal and the extended top portion eonforming to the leg of the animal, the bottom portion being provided with the inside and outside supplementary friction plates or soles, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. An improved horse-boot for containing a liquid medicament, comprising a bottom portion conforming approximately to the foot and ankle of the animal and a top portion conforming to the leg of the animal, molded in one seamless piece of an indurated fibrous composition or other adapted material and provided with the flat bottom sole or soles and with means for securing it upon the leg of the animal, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. An improved horse-boot, for containing a liquid medicament, comprising a bottom portion conforming approximatelyto the foot and ankle of the animal and an extended top leg portion, molded in its entirety in one imperforate or seamless piece of an indurated fibrous composition or other suitable material and provided with means for securing it in position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. As an improved article of manufacture, a horse-boot for containing a liquid medicament and retaining the same in contact with the hoof and ankle, comprising a bottom portion and an extended top portion respectively conforming to the hoof and leg parts which they are adapted to surround, both the bottom and extended top portions being imperforate or seamless and the whole being molded or formed of an indurated fibrous composition or other adapted material, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. As an improved article of manufacture, a horse-boot for containing a liquid medicament and retaining the same in contact with the hoof and ankle, comprisinga bottom portion and an extended top portion respectively conforming to the hoof and leg parts which they are adapted to surround, said bottom portion having the fiat friction-plates or supplementary soles, and the imperforate extended top portion carrying projecting top devices for securing the boot in position, both the bottom portion and extended top portion being molded or formed in a single imperforate piece of an indurated fibrous composition or other adapted material, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
