Upon-the frame of the press, a plate 32 is secured by means of screw bolts 33, 33, and slidably mounted in guide brackets 34, 34 on the rear face of this plate is a vertical bar 35 formed with latch- recesses 36, 36, said bar being connected with the treadle 25 by an adjustable link 37.

For turnlng the rock-shaft 59, 60 I provide on each a plurality of short, spacedapart hand levers 61, 61, 6262, the intermediate ones of which extend through vertical slots 63, 64, in the pipes 53, 54.
In the operation of the press, one each of the two sets of hand levers 61, 62, are raised, turning both rock- shafts 59, 60, swinging the pins 47, 46 downward, and thereby turning the latch members 41, 40 on their pivots to release the vertical bar 35, which, through the link 37, normally prevents the depression of the treadle. The latter `is then depressed by the operators foot, releasing the brake-shoe 29 from the brake-drum 28, and, through the treadle rods 24,-bell-crank levers 23, push rod 22 and shipper lever 19 shifting the revolving belt pulley 18 into engagement with the coneclutch member 17 rotatingnthe cam-shaft l5 and-thereby actuating the press. As the platen 13 rises, the operator removes his foot from the treadle, which is then raised by the springs 27, applying the brake 28, 29, and raising the bar 35, which latter is again latched in its upper position by the latch members 40, 41, by reason ofthe springs 44, and the weight of the hand lerers`61, 62 turning said latch members and the rock-shafts 59, into latching position. I prefer to have the latch recesses 36 in the bar 35 of substantial length, as here shown, in order that suflicient time will be given for said parts to be returned to' latching position, thus assuring that the recesses will not be jumped by the pawls 42, 43, it being essential only that their up er ends in moving downward shall engage t e pawls and be stopped thereby before the clutch is thrown in, except when the hand levers position. To release the bar 35 and permit the press to be closed, both of the rock- shafts 59, 60 must be turned by hand, and the hand levers on the two are so positioned shafts, however, that as the operator changes his position along the front of the press, he always has a lever of each set within his reach.
The device is of simple construction and is\easily detachable. It may be modified without departing from the scope of my invention,` and I do not wholly limit my claims to the specific construction here shown.
I claim:
1. In apparatus of the combination of a power applying member, a pair of latch members adapted independently of each other to hold said power applying member out of operative position, rock shafts arranged lengthwise of one side -of the. apparatus and: adapted respectively to retract said latch members, and a plurality of hand-levers on each of said rock shafts, said hand levers being soy positioned that the operator, standing at different positions lengthwise of said rock shafts can reach a hand lever on each rock-shaft with his two hands at the same time, but cannot do so with one hand. v
2. In a safety device for a power-driven machine, a pair of substantially parallel rock shafts both adapted to be turned for the starting of the machine, spaced-apart handles projecting laterally from each of said rock-shafts," the handles on one shaft alternating with those on the other shaft to form successive pairs of handles longitudinally spaced apart, the sucthe character described,
and a plurality ofV cessive pairs of handles beinghclose enough together to be grasped at t e same time by the respective hands of an operator but not close enough to be so grasped by one hand.
3. In a safety device for a power-driven machine, the combination of power-starting means, and two series of spaced-apart contrl members disposed alongl one side of the machine, a member of each of said series being required to be at the same time engaged by the operator for actuating said power-starting means, and said members being sopositioned that the operator, at all stations along the series, can at the same timevengage a member of each series with his respective hands but cannot do so with that the operator is required to use both One-handhands to do this. It is thus assured that the press will not be closed with either of his hands between the platens. The several hand levers are so disposed along the rock In.
