UNITED STATES WALTER J. SCHWEN, OF BLUE EAR-TH, MINNESOTA.
APPARATUS FOR DISPLAYING MERCHANDISE.
Application filed February 11, 1924. Serial No. 692,095.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER J. SGHWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Earth, in the county of Faribault and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Displaying Merchandise, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for displaying merchandise, and more particularly to means for normally supporting a box or container in a show case for displaying the contents, and permitting movement of the box to a second position for dispensing purposes.
An object of the invention is the provision of means for normally supporting a container in a substantially vertical position adjacent the front. of the show case and permitting the container to be lowered to a horizontal position when merchandise is to'be dispensed. 4
A; further object of the invention is the provision of apparatus of this character which may be adjusted both laterally and longitudinally of the show case for the purpose of supporting containers of various sizes. 1
In the accompanying drawings, 1 have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a show case showing the invention applied,
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view,
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view with the containers removed,
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the supporting members disassembled, and,
Figure 5 is a similar view of a spring.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates the bottom of a show case of ordinary construction. The show case is provided with end walls 2, formed of glass or other transparent material and a top 3. The front 4; of the show case is arat an angle to the vertical, as shown. The bottom of the; show case is provided with a pair of spaced slots 5, and a base member 6 is received in these slots. As shown, the base member is provided with angular end portions 7 which enter the slots, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, and permit adjustment of the base longitudinal- 1y of theshowcase. plate 8 is mounted on the base. This plate is provided-with an elongated slot 9, adapted to receive a pin' or bolt 10, carried by the base to permit adjustment of the plate laterally of the show case. The forward end of the plate is provided with a pair of ears 10. A supportform a sup-port for a box or container 15 when the supporting member is in raised'position. A spring, formed of a single piece of wire, is adapted to normally retain the supporting member in raised position. As shown, the spring is provided with a coil 16, adjacent each end and these coils are arranged on the hinged pin 13. The ends 17 of the wire engage the plate 8 and the intermediate portion forms a loop 18 engaging the bottom of thesupporting member. shown, the upper end of the supporting member is provided with a hook or handle 19 to permit the supporting member to be lowered to the dotted line position shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, for the purpose of dispensing merchandise.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description. The containers are normally supported in an inclined position parallel to the front of the show case, as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, for the purpose of more efficiently displaying the merchandise contained therein. The loop 18 of the spring engages the back of the supporting member 11 to retain it in this raised position. When a customer indicates the merchandise he desires. the operator lowers the supporting member 11 to the dotted line position against the tension of the spring by grasping the hook 19 and the merchandise may then be readily removed from the container. The slot 9 permits lateral adjustment of the plate 8 and the supporting member to receive containers of difi'erentsizes and the base member 6 may be adjusted longitudinally in the slots 5.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be, re-

sorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a show case having spaced longitudinally extending slots-in the bottom thereof, of a merchandise displaying device comprising a base having eX- tensions adapted to enter said slots, a supporting member mounted on said base, said supporting member being adjustable on said base in a direction at right angles to said slots, means for supporting a merchandise container on said supporting member, and means-for normally retaining said supporting member in a raised position.
2. The combination with a show case having spaced longitudinally extending slots in the bottom thereof, of a merchandise displaying device comprising a base having extensions adapted to enter said slots, a sup porting member mounted on said base, said supporting member being adjustable on said base in a direction at right angles to said slots, means for supporting a merchandise container on said supporting, member, and a spring engaging said supporting member to normally retain it in a raised position substantially parallel to the front of the show case: v p I 3.'In a deviceof the character described, a basepa plate adjustably mountedthereon, a supporting member hinged to'said plate, means for retaining said supporting member in a raised position, and means forsupporting a merchandise conta'iner'on said supporting member when it is in a raised po sition.
l. In a device of the character described, a base, a plate adj'ustably mounted on said base, a supporting member hinged to said plate, said supporting member being provided with a flange at its forward end adapted to support a merchandise container when the supporting member is in raised position, and a spring engaging said plate and said supporting member to normally retain said supporting member inrai'se'd position.
5. The combinat'ion with a show case having spaced longitudinally extending slots in the bottom thereof, of a merchandise displayi'n'g'device comprising a base having angular extensions adapted to enter said slots, a supporting member mounted on said base, said supporting member being adjustable on said base in a direction at right angles to said slots, and being provided with a flange to support a merchandise container when the supporting member is in raised position, and a spring engaging said supporting member to normally retain it in a raised position substantially;parallel to the front of the show case.
In testimony whereof, I affix my sig nature in presence of a witness.
