Be it known that I, lWINronn GLADSTONE iwTllL-NE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Hamilton, county of l l entworth, Province of Oniario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Wire Loops, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wire loops, formed from rod and more particularly to loops of comparatively great length as compared to width and the object of the invention is to devise a novel manner of securing the end of the loop, a further object being to prevent the sides of the loop from collapsing when the loop is subjected to a tensile load.
My invention consists of arigid plate provided with two orifices and adapted to be mounted upon a wire loop, all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a wire loop embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one form in which a rigid metal plate used in 'my invention may be made.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of another form in which this plate may be made.
Fig. at is a perspective view of a still further form in which this plate may be made.
In the drawings, like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the dift'erent views.
My invention comprises a Wire loop 1 which is formed from a rod 2 by bending the end of the rod back upon itself to form the loop 1 which, in the form illustrated, is of elongated shape having the substantially parallel sides 3 and 4.
The extremity of the rod is bent inwardly at 5 to form the inner end of the loop, which bent extremity overlies the main portion of the rod.
The rod is deformed at 6 immediately below the inner end of the loop.
Reference will first be made to the form of rigid plate illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
This embodiment comprises a rigid plate 7 provided with two parallel, spaced apart notches 8 projecting inwardly from opposite 1924. serial No. 718,971.

In the form. illustrated in Figs. 3, one of the notches 8 has been replaced by an orifice 9 disposed wholly within the plate.
in the form illustrated in Fig. l both notches 8 have been replaced by orifices 9 similar to the orifice 9 in ii The construction and operation of my invention is as follows 1- In the form illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. the plate 7 may be mounted in position after the loop i has been formed and by then closing in the plate as indicated at A in Fig. l disengagement of the plate from the loop is positively prevented.
It will be noted that the bent extremity passes through the plate 7 from the reverse side to that of the main portion of the rod.
When the structure is subjected to longitudinal pull, the rigid plate 7 adjusts itself upon the loop and becomes fixed in a position so that its plane intersects the plane of the loop 1 and the rod is firmly gripped between diagonally opposite edges of each of the orifices S. It will be observed that the notches 8 constitute orifices in the plate through which the deformed portion (3 of the rod and the inwardly bent extremity 5 respectively extend and are gripped therein. The grip of the plate '4' upon the rod is of an exceptionally tight nature so that the device forms a very secure and reliable means for closing the inner end of the loop 1.
A further and very important feature of the invention is that, when the plate 7 is in its set position gripping the rod 1 it positively prevents collapsing of the loop, as a result of the structure being subjected. to severe longitiulinal pull. 7
This feature is of great importance cases where the tructure is subjected severe pulling strain and in which it is sential that the loop be prevented from collapsing as for instance in the case of catenary hangers.
The operation of the invention when the forms of plates illustrated in Figs. 3 or 4.: are used, is practi "ally the same as that already describcd except that the manner of mounting the plate upon the loop must obviously be varied to suit.
From the foregoing it will be apparent in to that I have devised improvements in wire loops which should prove of wide application and great value.
lVhat I claim as my invention is: V 1. The combination with a wire loop formed bybending the end of a rod back upon itself, the extremity of the rod bent inwardly to form the inner end of the loop, of a rigid plate provided with two orifices, said plate mounted upon the rod so that the main body of the rod extends through one of the aforesaid orifices and the inwardly bent extremity passes through the other orifice from the reverse side of the plate. a
2. The combination with a wire loop formed by bending the end of a rod back upon itself, the extremity of the rod bent inwardly to form the inner end of the loop,
of a rigid plate provided with two orifices, said plate mounted uponthe rod so as to intersect the plane of the loop, the main body of the rod extending through and gripped between diagonally opposite edges of one of the aforesaid orifices and the inwardly bent extremity extending through the other orifice from the reverse side of the plate and gripped between diagonally opposite edges of said orifice.
3.- The combination with a wire loop formed by bending the end of a rod back upon itself, the extremity of the rod bent inwardly to form the inner end of the loop, of a rigid plate provided With two elongated orifices extending thereinto from opposite edges thereof, sald plate mounted upon the rod so as to intersect the plane of the loop, themain body of the rod extending through one of the aforesaid orifices and gripped between diagonally opposite edges of said orifice at the inner end thereof, and the inwardly bent extremity extending through the other orifice and gripped between diagonally opposite edgesthereof at the inner end of said orifice.
4. The combination with a wire loop formed by bending the end of a rod back upon itself, the extremity of the rod bent inwardly to form the inner end of the loop,
of a securing and spacing element for the inner end of the loop comprising a rigid plate provided with two orifices, said plan mounted upon the rod so as to intersect the plane of the loop, the main body of the rod extending through and gripped between diagonally opposite edges of one of the aforesaid orifices, and the inwardly bent extremity extending through the other orifice from the reverse side of the plate and gripped between diagonally opposite edges of said orifice, said plate constituting a separator adapted to prevent collapsing of the loop.
5. The combination with a wire loop formed by bending the end of a rod back upon itself, the extremity of the rod bent inwardly to form the inner end of the loop and the rod deformed in'nnediately below the loop, of a rigid plate provided with two orifices, said plate mounted upon the rod so as to intersect the plane of the loop, the aforesaid defornual portion of the rod extending through and gripped between diagonally opposite edges of one of the aforesaid orifices, and the inwardly bent extrem ity extending through the other orifice from the reverse side of the plate and gripped between diagonally opposite edges of said orifice.
('3. The combination with a wire loop formed by bending the end of a rod bacl: upon itself, the extremity of the rod bent inwardly to form the inner end of the loop. said extremity overlying the main body of the rod, of a rigid plate provided with two orifices, said plate mounted upon the rod so as to intersect the plane of the loop, the main bodyof the rod extending through and gripped between diagonally opposite edges of one of the aforesaid orifices, and the inwardly bent extremity extending through the other orifice from the reverse side of t 10 plate and gripped between diagonally opposite edges of said orifice.
