Description
A. F. STOWE.
Window Shade Hangers I P10152356. Patentedlune23,.1874.
WITNESSES. IJVVEJV'TOR Attorneys.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW F. STOVE, OF HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SHADE HANGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,256, dated June 23, 1874; application filed May 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW F. S'rowE, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Shade Han gers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the hangers employed in adjusting and hanging window-shades, maps, 850.; and consists in a novel extensible hanger suitable for windows of difl'erent breadths.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a front view of a shade suspended by my improved hanger. Fig. 2 is an end view of same.
The following is a description of my inven tion as applied to window-shades.
A is the curtain-roller, which bears the curtain or shade A. The roller Amay be of any style, either spring or otherwise, and forms no part of my invention, which is adapted to any style of roller. B are brackets, made of any suitable material, and are provided with bearings U for the roller-shaft, and sockets D for the ends of the extensible rods E and E that connect the two brackets B. E and E connect the two brackets, to each of which they are securely fastened. These rods are divided along the middle portions thereof, and at these points are embraced by collars e e, that ad mit of the making the distance between the brackets greater or less by drawing out or forcing together, as a telescope would be lengthened or shortened, to suit the breadth of the window or length of the shade-roller. The lower rod E and its collar 0 are in the nature of a roller, and the curtain or shade, as it extends down from the roller A, is passed behind the rod E, as shown in Fig. 2, and is thereby held close to the window.
Instead of the rod E a being constructed as a roller, it may, if desired, be simply a smooth extensible rod, over which the shade can slide; but I prefer to make it a roller.
In order that this extensible bracket may be readily attached to or removed from the window-casing without requiring the employment of screws and screw-drivers, I form but a single screw-hole through the top of each bracket B, and employ two gimlet thumbscrews, F F, which can be readily driven or removed by hand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The extensible shade or map hanger, composed of brackets B and extensible bars E E, substantially as set forth and shown.
2. The combination of roller A, shade or map A, brackets B I3, and extensible rods E E, substantially as set forth and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of May, 1874.
ANDREW F. STOIVE.
