Description
0. METZGER DISPLAY APPARATUS FOR FIREWORKS Filed Sept. 2, 1924 Kit- III/IA 4 .7 nwgulcz Oscar Mefiger Chroma.
Patented Jan. 6, 1925.
OSCAR METZGER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
DISPLAY APPARATUS FOR FIREWORKS.
Application filed September To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR Mn'rzenn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Apparatus for Fireworks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an apparatus for displaying fire Works such as sparklers etc. by arranging them in predetermined groups and rotating the groups in a circle, to give the whole the effect of a Wheel having burning and spark emitting spokes.
This and other objects of this invention will be fully illustrated in the drawing, described in the specification and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the display apparatus.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View through the middle of the apparatus, the section being taken on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the outer end of the apparatus, the section being taken on the line 3"-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional View of the outer end of the apparatus provided with a slightly modified form of retaining head and disc.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view thru the handle of the apparatus, the sec tions being taken on the line 5 5 of Figure 1.
In the several figures of the drawing like reference numerals indicate like parts.
The display apparatus for fire works forming the subject matter of my present invention is intended primarily for holding one or more of the so called sparklers in one or more radial groups on a hub that is adapted to be rotated after the sparklers are lighted giving the whole the effect of a fire Wheel from which the sparks are emitted.
As illustrated in Figure 1 the apparatus comprises an elongated bearing formed on the bar 1. In this bearing is mounted to rotate the spindle 2, having the crank 3 formed at one end thereof and carrying at the other end the head 4. The bar 1 may be formed in one piece having the 2, 1924. Serial No. 735,509.
bearing drilled thru the center thereof or it may be built up in two sections as illustrated in Figure 5, each section having a semicircular channel formed therein which when placed together form the bearing for the spindle 2 to rotate therein.
The head 4 of the apparatus comprises a rectangular plate that is suitably attached to the end of the spindle and carries on its face the disc 5. This disc has the radial channels 6, 7 8 and 9 provided therein that form suitable sockets With the head to receive the inner ends or handles of the sparklers 10.10. At intermediate points of the channels 6, 7, 8 and 9 the periphery of the disc 5 is notched with lips 11 projecting angularly from each of the notches. A hole is provided in the head 4 behind each of the notches in the disc so that the inner ends or handles of sparklers can be inserted thru the notches in the disc into the holes in the head 4. The lips 11 bear on the sides of the handle of the sparklers when these are inserted into the holes and increase the frictional contact between the handles of the sparklers and the holes in the head so as to hold them in place on the head.
After the sparklers have been inserted in the manner above described they are lighted. On the rotation of the crank 3 the head 4 swings the lighted sparklers in a circular path giving the whole the appearance of an illuminated wheel emitting sparks until the sparklers have been burned off.
The disc 5 instead of being provided with radial channels may be left flat while the channels for holding the ends or handles of the sparklers may be formed in the face of the head 4 as illustrated in Figure 4. The disc then only serves to hold the handles of the sparklers in place in the channels formed in the head.
I claim:
1. In a display apparatus for fire works, the combination of an elongated bearing forming a handle, a spindle mounted to rotate within said elongated bearing, a crank formed on one end of said spindle, a head carried on the other end of said spindle, radial sockets provided on the outer face of said head.
2. In a display apparatus for fire works, the combination of an elongated bearing forming a handle, a spindle mounted to rotate Within said elongated bearing, a crank formed on one end of said spindle, a head carried on the other end of said spindle, radial sockets provided on the outer face of said head, said head having holes in the face thereof, friction devices provided for each of the holes in said head.
3. In a display apparatus for fire Works, the combination of an elongated bearing forming a handle, a spindle mounted to rotate withiirsaid elongated bearing, a crank formed on one endof saidspindle, a headimounted on the other end of said spindle, a disc carriedon the face of said head, radial grooves formed in said disc and forming radial sockets in the face of said head, said disc having notches formed in the periphery thereof, lips provided on one side of each of the notches in said disc, said head having holes provided therein in line With the notches in said disc, said lips being adapted to hold the fire Works in place in the'holes on said head.
In testimony whereof I affixmy'signature.
OSCAR METZGER.
