Patented Jan. 8, 1924.
UNITED STATES THOMAS W. WOOD, OF CHICAGO,
WHEEL.
v .Application led June 6, 1921, Serial No. 475,249.. Renewed November 80, 1928.
To all 'whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. Woon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the cit of Chicago, county of Cook, and State o Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wheels, and has for its object the provision of a new disc metal wheel constructed with a double rim which is very attractive in appearance and strong and durable in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fi 1 is a side elevation of my improved wheeI;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2--2 of Flg. 3;
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail taken substantially on line 4 4 of Fig. 3, showing the ragged connection between the bushin and the discs.
he wheel is constructed from two metal discs pressed into the desired shape andA portion 12 of .a companion disc 13, the combined curved portions of' which] form a double or compound tubular rim. The discs bear against each other at the inner faces of their webs, as at 14, immediately inward of the tubular portions 11 and 12, and are gradually curved or rounded outward at the central portion, thus forming a reverse curve greatly adding to the appearance of the wheel. Openings 15 with ragged edges are provided at the centers of the discs into which the contracted'ends or sleeves 16 of the bushing 17 are placed and driven by upsetting 'the outer ends of said sleeves therein, thereby preventing the bushings from -tu in the discs. The bushin may be ma e from brass or any suitab e metal and are provided with a 'polished may be central bearing portion, but the bushings provided with anti-friction bearings if desired.
While I have'illustrated and described the preferred form of construction forcarryiny my invention into effect, this is capable o variation and modification without departing from the spirit of l'the invention. I,
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction lset forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having descrlbed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:l
l. A wheel comprising a bushing and metal discs having edges formed into a compound tubular rim, engaging web portions extending from said rim portions, and central web portions curved outwardly from said engaging portions to the bushing, which is mounted by having its ends upset in ragged Iopenings infsaid central portions.
2. A wheel comprising a bushing and a plurality' of metal discs having tubular edges, one of which surrounds the other, forming a compound tubular rim, engaging web portions extending from said rim portions, central web portions curved outwardly from said engaging portions and having openings with irregular edges, and a bushing which has its ends upset in the irregular edges of said openings.
3. A 'wheel comprising lnter-engaging metal discs havin central openings provided with ragged edges, and a bushing rigidly mourted therein by having its ends driven into the ragged edges of said central openings.
4. A wheel comprising a plurality of engaging metal discs having openings provided with ragged ed es, and a bushing rigidly mounted on sai discs., said bushing having contracted end portions which are upset 1n the ragged central openings in said discs.v
In testimony .whereof I have signed my name to this specification -in the presence of vtwo subscribing witnesses:
CmnnNon Tmznnnr, FREDA C. APrLE'roN.
