To all whom it may concern:

Be it known `that I, CHARLES MEIER, a citizen o-f the United States, residing Vat Haverhill, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Fail Supports, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to milk pail .supe

ports such as are used for supporting a milk pail upon the knees of the milker. The general object of the invention is: to ypro-vide a support of this character which is very rigidly connected to the pail at the rim bead thereof, which is so constructed that it can be shifted into a vertical, depending position and out of the way when the milk pail isv being carried but also may be shifted up to a horizontal or supporting position when desired.

A further object is to provide means whereby the supporting ears may be detachably locked intheir horizontal or supporting position.

A still further object is to provide a device of this character in which the body of the support is formed of a single sheet of metal ydoubled to secure proper strength and to embrace thepail.

My invention is illustrated in the acompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is -a side elevation of a pail having my improved supports attached thereto; l

Referring to these drawings, 10 designates the body portion of la milk pail which terminates at its rim in -a bead 11 having therein the usual reinforcing wire 12; A bail 13 is, of course, used in connect-ion with the pail, as will be later stated.

Disposed at opposite points on the rim of the pail are the ears whereby the bail may be connected to the pail and, as shown --in Figuref, the body portionof thisbail connecting device consists of a single sheet of metalv which! is'folded upon itself so yas to form a blank. The bead 16,5forms a be-aring for the two angularly bent ends of the supporting i members 21. Then the supports may be turned downward. Thus when the arms are up', the sup-ports are locked in their vraised position. This construction also permits these supports 2l to be removed entirely whenever desired or it desired.

It will be seen that .these notches act to hold `the supports 2l in their vhorizontal position and take the strain placed upon the supports, and that this is also accomplished the engagement of the supports with the inturned lower portion 'of the ear 14. It fwsill :be further noted that the strain on the `members 21 is :borne yby a clip formed of `practically:three thicknesses of metal which .embraces the side of the pail.

The `construction which I have described is Ivery simple, can be cheaply made, is very strong when applied, and is extremely convenient. Inasmuch as the supporting members21 are detachable, it .is obvious that the :pail may be .used without the supporting Amembers and that the -supporting members are kapplied whenever it isidesired to .do so or the supporting members may be turned into'a vertical position and then turned into .ahorizontal vposition when it is desired to .use it.

I claima- 1. .A supporting device for pails comprising a `clip adapted to embrace the edge of a pail, said clip being formed of a plurality of thicknesses of sheet metal having an lupwardly extending, medially disposed ear adapted to engage with v,the Vbail of the pail, land a pai-r aof laterally disposed, downwardly 'extending ears, lhaving beads above said ears, and a supporting lmember consist'- -ing olf ya stil wire, approximately U-shaped to provide approximately parallel arms, the extremities of the ,arms being v,angularly extending and pivotally engaged in said being extended upward and adapted to receive the hook of va supportingbail, the clip ,at its upper end having an upper bead embracing the rim `of the pail anda pair of beads belowthe first named bead, and a supportingmember `consisting of a strip of wire U-shaped to provide approximately `parallel arms, the extremities of the arms being angularly extended laterally outward and engaged with said last named beads, said last named beads on their inner edges having notches within which the arms of the -supporting member are adapted to engage when the supporting member is turned into a horizontal position, theresilience of the supporting member causing the arms to spring laterally out-wardv and into ysaid notches.

A supporting device for pails including a fst-ripof metal, the strip having a pair of longitudinally extending slots at one end to provide -a medially disposed, upwardly extending ear perforated for engagement with a pail bail, :the slots also defining a pair oit' downwardly extending ears, said ears and the body of the clip having at their upper ends an upper bead and a pair of laterally spaced lower beads, the upper bead being larger than the lower bead and embracing the rim ofthe pail, the body of the clip and said downwardly extending ears being perorated for the passage .of rivets, and a supporting member consisting of a .strip of resilient metal U-shaped lto provide .two approximately parallel arms, the resilience ofthe arms urging them laterally outward, the extremities of lthe arms being extended late-rally and inserted in said lower beads, the inner margins of the lower beads having notches in which the arms are adapted to spring when the A.arms are turned to a horizontal position, thus limiting the upward movement of the arms and locking them from downward movement.

4. The combination with a pail having a bail and a rim, of supportingmeans for the pail consisting of clips applied to opposite points loi the margin ,of the Vpail and engaging beneath the rim thereof, each of said clips having upwardly extending, medially v`disposed ears, abail having hooks engaging said ears, the clip having laterally spaced beads, and a supporting member having two approximately parallel arms, the extremities oi' the ,arms arranged to extend into said said beads and the arms vbeing resiliently urged away from each other, the inner margins of the beads having notches in which said arms will engage and lock when the supporting members are turned to a lhorizontal position, the base of each medially disposed ear acting asa stop limiting the upward movement of the supporting members..
