UNITED STATES) YAroHmo SHIBA, or sA v Jos n, CALIFORNIA. 1
COMBINED FINGER RING nn oonn c rrEaj i Application filedl ebruary 24,1923. Serial No. 620,959.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YAroHIno SHIBA, a. sub ect of the Emperor of Japan, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Claraand State of California, have inventedjnew and useful Improvements in Combined Finger Rings andlCord Cutters,of which the following is a specification.
This invention resides in the provision of a novel and highly useful combined finger ring and cord cutter in which the device has the appearance of an ordinary ring and is provided with a concealed cutter whereby cord or string such as used in stores for tying packages and bundles may be easily and conveniently severed. while the ring is worn on the hand.
An object of the invention .is to provide a device of the character described in which the latter is located beneath'the setting or ornamental portion of the ring, said orna-' mental portion or setting of the'ring being hinged whereby it may be moved to permit of access to the'cutter and moved to lie flat on the ring and conceal the cutter.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
' Fig. 1 represents a perspective view showing the manner of use of the ring to cut a strin Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a plan view with the ornamental portion or head of the ring removed. I
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the ring as when the head is closed. 7
Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing the head raised to permit access-t0 the cutter..
Fig. 6 is a sectional view through the ring.
Fig. 7 is a rear elevation.
In carrying out the invention I provide an ordinary finger ring body portion 1, having an enlargement 2 thereon, on which on largement the setting or ornamental piece 8, which may be a stone or a shield of metal having some fanciful characteristics, forexample, such as a signet ring. The headfor ornamental portion 3 is provided with a lug 4-.near one end, which lug extends into an opening 5' provided inthe enlarged-portion 2. A pin 6 is extended. transversely through the setting 2 and'lug 4t and hingedly tion 2 there ,are provided knives 7 arranged opposite'one another and provided with spring is fastened'as at 10 to the portion 2 and bears on the'head 3 so as to force the free end of the same upwardly. WVhen the head is in raised position, the knives are substantially concealed and upon ordinary inspection of the ring when it is worn on the' hand, it has the same appearance as the ordinary ring. However, when it is desired to sever a stringit is. only necessary'to bring the string in between the knives to effect a cutting or severing action. It will thus be'seen that the ring will be highly useful to bundle wrappers and clerks who are required to tie bundles and packages.
' Iii order to cause the setting tolie flat on, the rmg and to better conceal the cut-- ting arrangement so that the ring will appear more like the ordinary finger rmg. there is provided a cam or wedge member i v 1 ,521,05i PATENT OFFICE.
connectsthe setting 3 :witl1,,tl1e ring. In. the opposed faces of the. setting 3 and por- 11 which is pivoted as at 12, to the enlarged portion 2: and when the ring is ready for use as a cutter pro ects outwardly a'slight distance. By. engaging this projecting-poi;
tion of the wedge'men'iber 11 and moving the same so that it wedges between the nem-i bers 2 and 3 nearthe pivoted ends ofthe latter, the member 3 will moved so that it is caused to lie flat against the member 2, the knives then overlapping one another.
To release the setting so that it will move byaction of the spring into open position and permit of access to the cutters, it is only necessary to remove the wedge or canimember from between the members 2 and 3, there being a portionv of said member projecting slightly from the n'iarginof the head whereby it may be readily engaged with the linger nail andjmoved as described.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly useful, simple and compact ring which takes into consideration the provision of an ornamental setting, such as astone' or metal shield, between which and the body of the .ring an effective cord cutter is arrangedandin which the setting may be moved into and out of a position providing for access to and Well concealing the. cutter. I claim:
l. A ring comprisinga body portion, a setting lii'n 'ed adjacent one end to the body portion, a knife located between the setting and body-portion and arranged to be accessible When one end of the setting is raised a spring at all times tending to raise said end of the'settingand' means for moving and holding the setting in position fiat against the ring body portion and preventing access to the cutter, said setting substantially concealing the knife and its associated elements.
2. A ring comprising a body portion, setting hinged adjacent one end to the body portion, a knife located between the setting and body portionand arranged to be accessible When one end of the setting is raised,
a spring at all times tending to raise said end of the setting and means for moving and holding the setting in" position flat against the ring body portion and preventing access to the cutter, which means coni prises a Wedge member pivoted on the body portion and movable to engage between and with the body portion and said setting, said setting substantially concealing the knife and its associated elements.
AIoHIno SHIBA.
