ARTHUR I. FISCHER, OF CLEVELAND HETGHT OHIO, ASSIGNOR T0 MORRIS I-I.
GLAUBER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO. 1
COMBINED WATER SUPPLY AND OVERELOW FIXTURE FOR BATI-ITUBS.
Application filed September 28, 1923.'. Serial'No. 665,330.
Be it known that I, ARTHUR I. FISCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clevelandl-Ieights, in the county of Cuyahoga yand State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined lVater Supply and Qverflow Fixture for Bathtubs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a combined water supply and over-flow fixture for bath tubs, and my general object is to provide a fixture of that kind constructed of cast-metal and porcelain, vitreous china or enameled material for attachment and use with porcelain or enameledv bath tubs and similar lavatory receptacles. Furthermore the device is constructed in a particular way to effect convenient and safe attachment to the tub, and also convenient adjustment in fitting the respective parts to tubs having inclined end walls.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the end portion of a bath tub, showing my improved fixture attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section transversely of 'the bath tub and a front elevation of the fixture parts within the tub.
Figs. 3 and 4 are section and perspective views, respectively, of the hollow cast-metal head or main coupling member of the iixture.
Figs. 5 and 6 are section and perspective views, respectively, of the hooded overflow plate which is used as a front clamping member for the fixture or fitting.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged vertical section centrally through the head and the clamping hood affixed to the wall of a bath tub and connected with an overflow discharge pipe.
Fig. 8 is a rear elevation and vertical section on line 8-8 of Fig. 7, showing the discharge pipe in dotted and full lines in different angular positions.
The invention comprises a cast-metal hollow head 2 having the form of an elbow, one end of which is turned downwardly and provided with external screw-threads 3 and an internal end seat or socket 4. This end socket is splierically rounded to receive a rounded or partly spherical collar or terminal member 5 which is screwed or brazed to the upper end of a vertical discharge pipe 6.
A screw-threaded coupling nut or ring 7 serves to unite the` said parts together, and this nut or ring is also rounded internally to it the spherically-shaped collar 5. The open iiular flange 14 having a fiat circularA front face 15 adapted` to abut aga-inst the outside face of the inclined end wall 16 of a bath tub or other lavatoiyreceptacle B opposite a round overflow opening 17 therein., see Fig. 7. A rubber sealing washer or gasket may be used between flange 14 and the tub wall 16, butthis gasket is not shown in the drawing although commonly used. Overflow head 2 is also particularly constructed todeliver water into the tub. Thus, a short screwthreadednipple or extension 18 is cast integrally with the top ofhead 2 and a watery delivery spout 19 extends forwardly at the front side of the head, and the water passage 20 within the spout communicates with the vertical inlet 21 within nipple 18. A combined hot and cold water valve body 22 is connected to nipple 18, and this valve body is clamped to tubl wall 16 and has separate valve- handles 23 and 24 for controlling the hot and cold water supply leading to inlet 21.
Delivery spout 19is cast integral with the upper part of head 2 and lies in a horizontal plane at the top of or above the overow intake opening 25 in said hollow head, so that a normal overiiow will not reach or submerge the spout. The spout is also long enough to extend through opening 17 in ywall 16 and into the tub a substantial distance in front of said wall, so that the water may be discharged downwardly into the tub apart from the wall. However, delivery spout 19 is completely covered and concealed by a rounded apron or hood 26 which forms an integral part of a perforated clamping disk or plate 27 made of porcelain, enameled metal or vitreous material. The body of this perforated clamping member 27 isprefthrough a relatively largeopening29 in the upper half of the porcelain disk and into the rounded projectinghood 26,7 and; a
clamping screw 30'extendsthrough a cen-v tralxopening Blfin the porcelain plate where sci'ewvengagement may be effected with a depending lug 32 within hollow head 2. The enlarged outer eiid-331ofscrew 30 may be provided with an opening to permita chain to be attachedthereto, but this chain is. not
shown in the drawings; itis commonly used to hold arubber plug for; use with the wasteV outletgB- at'the bottom ot the tub.
Clamping plate 27 being made of porcelain or vitreous china it is unnecessary to give the cast metal head and its delivery spout a highly polished finish because hoody 26 and the body of the clamping plate completely conceals the .spout and head viewedV from the insidel ofl the tub.l The hollow head beingsupportedin.the main from and by valve .body 22, an excessive or very tight` clamping pressure isr not demanded of. screw 30.. Moreover7 the ball joint :fori the overflow discharge ,pipev 61 permits .fiatf and solid seating ofl theheadagainst the tub and.. avoidsstrain or bind'at the .Joint in .making a connection. with pipe 6 regardless. of:
whether pipe 6 isperpendicular or. more or less inclined in respect to the bath tub and its `attached overflow head 2.
Being aware of the Letters Patents granted to I-I. M. leaver Nos. 906592 and 921574, for improvements in lavatories, I am only claiming herein the new and novel features and improvements whichl I have made in view thereof.
That is to say, what I regard as my inyention and discovery and desire to claim, is:
1. A combined water supply and overflow fixture for abatli tub, comprising a hollow cast-metal elbow open at its opposite ends having a4 water delivery spout extending therefrom, a vitreous china overflow plate having an opening in its upper half through which said spout is adapted to project into the tub, and provided with overflow openings iii its lower half' beneath said spout, and a clamping device adapted to attach said parts tothe tub. n
2. A. combined water supply and overflow fixture for a bath tub comprising a hollow head having a depending outlet and a. hori- Zontal inlet and provided with a water de livery spout at its upper end extending forwardly beyond the inlet, a clamping plate having overflow openings in its lower hall and a spout receiving opening and overhang-ing hood in its upper half, said spout extending beyond the front of the lower half of said clamping plate when the parts are fixed upon the tub.
In testimony whereof I aiiixmy signature hereto this 18th day of September 1923.
ARTHUR I. FISCHER.
