To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM SEIDE- MANN and JOSEPH JOHNSON, citizens of the United States, and residents of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of vVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tap Wrenches, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The invention relates to tap wrenches.
The general object of the invention is to provide an adjustable tap wrench attachment for wrench sets having interchangeable handles and sockets, the handles being of various shapes and len ths but having a detachable interfitting driving connection with the attachment.
A further object of the invention is to produce an inexpensive, compact and simple ta wrench attachment for wrench sets,
ith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and claimed and all equivalents.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through a device embodying the invention; Fig. 2- is an end view of the attachment, parts being broken away; Fig. 3 is a side view of the attachment; Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the jaws.
An operating handle 5, which may be interchangeable with one or more others having different shapes, is provided with a squared or polygonal end 6 having stops 7 punched therefrom and a friction catch of well known construction comprising a ball 8 mounted in a transversely extending opening 9 and limited in its movement by a retaining crimped portion 10, and a spring 11 serving to move the ball to a position to engage the socket of the member in which the shank of the handle is inserted.
A member 12 has a squared or polygonal socket 13 formed therein to detachably receive the polygonal shanks of interchange able handles 5 or other parts of the wrench set that may be used with the tap Wrench. This member 12 is provided with a trans versely extending bore 14 and a transversely extending slot 15 which extends down to a position intersecting the upper part of 1922. 'Serial No. 566,541.

A right and left hand jaw-moving-andclamping screw 17 is mounted in the bore 14 and as the slot 15 terminates short of the horizontal axis of the bore 14 the screw 17 will be journalled in said bore and it is prevented from moving laterally in. said 'bore by a pin. 18. This pin 18 is disposed in a hole 19 extending vertically from the bottom of the socket 13 down into the bore 14 and its lower end projects into a cen trally disposed annular groove 20 in the screw. The head end of the pin 18 is firm- 1y held to the member 12 as by upsetting it.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. A tap wrench attachment for wrench sets comprising a member having a socket in one end to detachably interfit with an operating handle and having a transversely disposed bore and a slot extending from the other end of said member into the bore and terminating at a distance short of the horizontal axis of the bore to form guide shoulders adjacent the bore, a rotatable tjavvclamping screw journalled in said bore and having a centrally disposed annular groove, said member having a vertically disposed hole extending from the bottom of the socket to said transverse bore, a pin disposed in said vertically disposed hole and having its end extending into said groove to prevent lateral movement of said screw, tapclamping jaws slidably mounted in said slot and havingthreaded portions engaged by the screw, and a plate secured to the slotted end of said member and forming a retainer for said jaws and provided with a central opening adjacent the clamping faces of the jaws.
2. A tap wrench attachment comprising 1 member having detachable connectlon with an operating handle and having a transversely disposed bore and a slot extending from the bottom end of said member into the lower part of the bore with the inne end of the slot forming guide shoulders adjacent the bore, a rotatable jaw-clamping screw journalled in said bore, means for preventing lateral movement of said screw with respect to said member, tap-clamping jaws slidably mounted in said slot and having threaded portions engaged by said screw, and. a plate secured to the bottom end of said member and forming a retainer for said jaws and provided with a central opening adjacent the clamping faces of the jaws,
3. In a tap wrench attachment for wrench sets, the combination of a member having a socket in one end to detachably interfit with an operating handle, a rotatable jawclamping screw mounted within said member and having a centrally disposed annular groove, said member having a vertically disposed hole extending from the bottom of the socket, a pin disposed in said vertically disposed hole and having its end extending into said groove to prevent lateral movement of said screw, and tap-clamping jaws mounted within said member and operatively connected to said screw.
