Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. KAN- NING, a citizen of the United States, residing at East St. Louis, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming. part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view o f said wrench. Fig. 3 is a sectionalview taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side View of a modified form of my invention. Fig. 5 shows a head provided with an alligator jaw, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the interchangeable jaws which is employed when it is desired to use the wrench on pipes or round articles.
This invention relates to wrenches, and particularlyT to wrenches of the type shown in my prior patent, No. 777 ,955, dated December 20, 1904.
One object of my invention is to provide a Wrench having a pivoted head in which an interchangeable jaw is adjustably mounted, so that the wrench can be used onobjects of various shapes and size.
Another object of my invention is to provide a wrench of the character referred to having improved means for locking the head in its adjusted position..
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings, which represent thepreferred form of my invention, 1 designates the shank or handle of the wrench, and 2 designates plates which are fastened to said shank and project beyond the upper end thereof to form arms between which the head 3 is arranged, said head being pivotally connected to said. arms by a pin 4. The head 3 is provided with a rigid 5 and also a cooperating adjustable jaw 6, having a curved engaging face in which teeth are formed, so that the Wrench can be used for turning pipes or objects of circular shape. When it is desired to convert the wrench from a pipe-wrench into a nutwrench, the adjustable jaw 6 can be replaced by a jaw 7, having a straight face, as in the Wrench shown in Fig. 4. 4
Referring to Fig. 1, it will be noted that the head of the Wrench is provided with a transversely-extending groove or bore 8, which is approximately circular shape in cross-section, and mounted in said groove is the shank 9 of the adjustable jaw 5, the end of the shank 9 being screw-threaded and extending thro ugh the rigid jaw 5. The groove S in the head 3 is so, formed that the walls thereof overhang the shank of the adjustable jaw, and thus prevent it from being displaced, and while I have herein stated that said groove is approximately circular shape in cross-section it will of course beunderstood that it could be formed in various Ways to prevent displacement of the adjustable jaw without departing from the spirit of my invention.
A knurled nut 10 is mounted on the end of the shank 9, and said nut is confined in position by a lu 11, which projects upwardly from a latera l -extending portion 12 of the head. Prefera ly the groove 8 in the head of the wrench is of greater depth than the diameter of the shank 9 of the adjustable jaw, while the opening in the rigid jaw through which the threaded portion of said shank extends is of approximately the same diameter as said shank, so that the adjustable jaw can rock slightly in its bearing, and thus permit the wrench to be disengaged readily from the object on Whichit is used. I also prefer to provide the rigid jaw with a recess 13 (shown in dotted lines in Fig, 1) to receive the curved lextension 14 at the base of the adjustable jaw, so that said jaw can be moved very close to the rigid jaw, and thus enable the wrench to be used on pipes or objects of very small diameter.
The means which I have herein. shown for retaining thepivoted head 3 in adjusted position also forms one of the novel features of my invention and consists of a plunger 15, which coperates with recesses or notches 16, formed in the periphery of the disk-shaped portion 17 of the head 3, that is arranged between the arms on the shank of the Wrench. ico
nut extending through openings in the plates 1o 5 2, that are connected to the shank of the wrench. With a construction of this character the plunger 15 can be forced into operati ve position by turnin the nut 18 and will be positively locked in t is position until the I IO nut is turned in the opposite direction, thereby preventing the head from being accidentally unlocked.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modified form of my invention in which the disk-shaped portion of the head is provided in its periphery with teeth 20, that cooperate with an adjusting-worm 21, which is j ournaled in bearings formed in the shank, said screw extending through openings formed in the plates 2, connected to said shank.
In both forms of my invention the diskshaped portion of the pivoted head 3 is provided with a shoulder 22, which cooperates with a shoulder formed on the end of the shank when the head is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, so as to insure a rigid bearing for the head, and thus relieve the locking-plunger from strain.
When the head is in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the saine result is accomplished by the laterally-extending portion 12 of the head which engages the edge of the shank.
In Fig. 5 AI have shown a head provided with rigid jaws of the alligator type, which can be substituted for the head 3, provided with the adjustable jaw, and in Fig. 6 I have shown an interchangeable jaw, which can be substituted for the straight-face jaw when it is desired to convert the wrench from a nutwrench to a pipe-wrench.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A wrench comprising a shank provided at its upper end with a longitudinally-extending bore, plates connected to said shank and projecting beyond the upper end thereof, a head carrying jaws and havinga diskshapedportion arranged between said plates, a pin carried by said plates andextending through the disk-shaped portion of said head, a threaded plunger mounted in the bore in the shank for engaging the diskshaped portion ofthe head to lock it in position, and an adjusting-nut mounted on said plunger and extending through openings in the plates; substantially as described.
2. A Wrench comprising a shank having a pair of plates connected thereto and projectmg beyond the upper end thereof, a movable head having a disk-shaped part arranged between the rojecting portions of said plates andpivota ly connected thereto, said head being provided with a rigid jaw and an opensided slot, an adjustable jaw having a threaded shank mounted in said slot and extending through an opening in said rigid aw, an adjusting-nut mounted on said shank and bearing against the outer side of said rigid jaw, a laterally-extending portion 12 on the head provided with a lug 11 which holds said adjusting-nut in position, and means carried by said plates and coperating with the disk-shaped part of the head Jfor locking the head in its adjusted position; substantially as described. u
8. A wrench comprising a shank, a pair of plates connected to said shank and projecting beyond the upper end thereof, a pivotally-mounted head arranged between said plates and provided with a straight-face rigid jaw having a recess formed at the lower end of the engaging face, a cooperating adjustable jaw carried by said head, said jawbeing provided with a curved face which at its lower end merges into an extension that projects into the recess of the rigid jaws when said jaws are closed, and means carried by said plates for locking the head in position; substantially as described.
4. A wrench comprising a bifurcated shank, a head provided with a disk-shaped portion arranged in the bifurcation of said shank on a iixed pivot, a notch or shoulder formed in the periphery of said disk-shaped portion which is adapted to co erate with a shoulder formed at one side of the upper end of the shank when the head is in one position, a laterally-extending member on said head arranged above the disk-shaped portion thereof for coperating withthe other side ofthe shank when the head is in a different position, and an adjustable jaw carried by t e head; substantially as described.
5. A wrench comprising a shank, plates connected to the sides of the upper end of said shank, a head arranged between said plates and pivotally connected thereto, said head being provided with a rigid jaw'and a disk-shaped portion through which the pivot for the head extends, a plunger mounted in a slot in the upper end of the shank for engaging the disk-shaped portion of the head to hold it in adjusted position, and an adjusting-nut mounted on a threaded ortion of said plunger and extending throug openings in said plates substantially as described.
