ATENT OFFICE.
LOWELL DEW'EY EDWARDS AND HARLOW FRANK WILLIAMS. OF PROC'IORVILLE, OHIO'.
EXTENSIBLE RULE HOLDER.
Application filed January 17, 1924. Serial No. 686,814.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, LOWELL DEWEY EDWARDS and HAnLow FRANK IVILLIAMS, citizens of the United. States, residing at Proctorville, in the county of Lawrence and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible Rule Holders, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to holders and has more specific reference to a holder primarily adapted for the reception of an extensible rule wherein the same may be placed in the pocket of a workman in such a manner as to negative the liability of the same accidentally falling from the pocket while the workman is busily engaged in carrying out his duties.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a holder for extensible rules wherein the same may be manufactured and marketed at extremely small cost and wherein the same will effectively carry out the purpose intended.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form of an extensible rule holder hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout both of the views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rule holder constructed in accordance with the present invention, theA same being shown as actually in use, and
Figure 2 is a detail transverse cross sectional view of the present article.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, a rule holder constructed in accordance with this invention is formed from a single length of sheet material, preferably a suitable metal and bent to the general U-form as clearly shown in both of the views.
This holder embodies a front wall 5 and a rear wall 6 of relatively elongated nature the same being' bent from said single strip of metal into spaced relationship with each other and being joined together at their lower ends by a cross portion 7 of said metal strip.
Formed integrally upon the opposite edges of said cross Wall 7 and bent upwardly into a relatively vertical direction, are rule engaging legs SBS, it being noticed that the major portion of these legs are bent inwardly of the opposite sides of the holder for manifestly contacting the edges of the rule A for preventing the accidental disengagement of the rule from the holder. For facilitating the positioning of the rule within said holder the upper ends of these legs 8 8 are bent upwardly as at .Q -9.
The upper end of the front wall 5 of said Ushaped holder is bent forwardly and then downwardly for providing a looped portion l0, the end of' which is then bent downwardly for providing a skirt portion ll which is in slightly spaced relation to the front wall 5 of the holder, it being apparent that this skirt portion is to extend outwardly of the pocket B of the garment for binding the same between the wall 5 of the holder and said skirt portion 11, and for thereby preventing the accidental displacement of the holder with respect to the pocket B.
It will therefore be seen that I have provided a highly novel and useful form of rule holder for carpenters, etc., and one that will meet with all of the requirements for a successful commercial use.
Minor changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a rule holder of the character described including a pair of spaced parallel walls interconnected at their lower ends, a clasp member formed in the upper end of the front wall for maintaining said holder within a pocket, means formed at the sides of the holder for maintaining the rule in position therein, said means comprising vertically extending strips of metal the major portions of which extend within the sides of the holder for contacting the opposite edges of the rule disposed therein.
In testimony whereof we ahix our signatures.
HARLOW FRANK WILLIAMS. LOWELL DEVE'Y EDIWARDS.
