Description

S. SANDERSON MANTLE AND WINDOW A-SSEMBLAGE Nov 4 1924.
A ITORNE Y8 S. SANDERSON MANTLE AND WINDOW ASSEMBLAGE Filed Jan. 11 1923 2 Shuts-Shot! 2 INVENTOR SqMuEL SAM/D53 M av ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 4, 1924.
SAMUEL SANDERSON, O1 WALTHAM, ."LVIAEJSACHUSETTS.
MANTLE AND WINDO'W ASSEMBLAGE.
Application filed. January 11, 1.923.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SANnnasoN,
a citizen of Great Britain, and a resident of lValtham, in the county of Middlesex and State of h Iassachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Mantle and Window Assemblage, of which the followin is a description.
My invention relates to a novel mantle 0 and window assemblage and the general object of the invention is to provide a structure of the indicated character embodying at the inner side a mantle and above the mantle a window whereby ornaments placed on the mantle shelf will be visible both from the interior and exterior of the house provided with the assemblage.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide an assemblage of the indicated character comprising elements adapted to gbe made up to be emplaced as a unitary structure possessing strength and attractiveness to a high degree.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and characteristics will more clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawillgs: are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the interior of a combined mantle and window assemblage embodying my invention showing the same emplaced in a building shown in part, the floor of the building being in vertical section;
Figure 2 is an exterior view of the assemblage as emplaced;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse vertical section on the line 3-3, Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 4-4, Figure 1.
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example I provide a frame which appears at both the inside and outside of the structure and forms window frames as will appear. Rigid with the frame 10 I provide at the inner side of the structure a mantle designated generally by the numeral 1.1. the numeral 12 indicating the mantle shelf. In the illustrated example Serial. No. 612,04G.
I have shown to constitute the back of the mantle 11 a board 13 which advantageously may be formed of plaster board. The mantle and its shelf 12 and the mantle board 13 are placed in the frame 10, said plaster board being in a vertical plane adjacent to the inner side of said frame 10.
Above the mantle 11 I embody in the frame 10 a window frame 14, extending from the top of the frame 10 to about the plane of the mantle shelf 12. The sill 15 of the window 14 is in the transverse plane of the mantle shelf 12 and at the outer side of the frame 10. The head 16 of the frame 10 extends across the top of the window frame 14 and across side window frames 17.
The window frames 17 extend below the central window frame 14 and therefore below the plane of the mantle shelf 12. The unmeral 18 indicates a glazed sash which may be of any suitable design and fitted in the frame 14. The numeral 19 indicates sashes fitted in the side window frames 17. A water table 20 is embodied in the frame 10 in a horizontal plane approximately at the center of height of the mantle and behind the back 13 of the mantle. The water table 20 extends at its ends to the sides of the frame 10 and is broadened to form sills 115 for the side window frames 17. In the frame 10 outside of the mantle 11 and between the water table 20 and the sill 15 of window 14, I preferably provide a fixed frame 23 having a depressed panel 24 to harmonize with the outside appearance of the window assemblage.
The frame 10 at the outside includes vertical side members 21 at the outside of the side windows 17 said frame 10 including furthermore intermediate vertical members 22 between the side windows 17 and the central window 14.
The above described structure constitutes an assemblage possessing utilitarian and aesthetic attributes to a high degree and the various elements are so correlated as to possess strength and are capable of being as sembled and emplaced with facility.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be lilil considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: I
A structure of the class described comprising a frame, a mantle built into said frame at the approximate center, a Window in said frame above the mantle, side windows in said frame extending below the first-mentioned Window, a Water table in said frame and extending continuously beneath the side Windows and beneath the central Window beloW' the top of then'iantl'e and forming sills for said side Windows, and a head in the frame extending continuously across all the Windows.
SAMUEL SANDERSON.
