Description
I 1,509,551 p r. A. GIBSON COMBINED FLOAT AND PADDLE FOR USE WHILE BA'THING Filed April 5, 1924 Patented Sept. 23, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED FLOAT AND PADDLE FOR USE WHILE BATHING.
Application filed April 5, 1924. Serial No. 704,464.
1 all whom it may concern Be it known that ANDREW GIBSON, a sub ject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Kingston, Gilroy Road,
Turramurra, in the State of New South Wales, Commonwealth of Australia, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Float and Paddle for Use While Bathing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a float and paddle device for use while bathing or swimi'ning and the object of the invention is to provide a device by means of which one can keep oneself afloat and at the same time propel oneself through the water. The de vice may also be used in the surf.
The device comprises a shaft with a paddle at each end and a float in the middle.
The float consists of an outer covering of fabric material such as canvas or the like v which is attached to and surrounds the shaft. Thls outer covering contains an 111- flatable bladder which may be of rubber or the like. The inflatable bladder is constructed with a recess which enables it to envelope the shaft. The outer covering may be filled with kapok or other buoyant ma terial in lieu of the compressed air con- 30 tained within the bladder.
Figure 2 is a sectional perspective showing the construction of the bladder or rubher bag. The outer covering 0r canvas bag 3 is situated at the middle of the shaft 4 and is secured thereto at 5 5 by cord bindings or the like. Through an opening (not shown in the drawings) similar to that in the cover of a foot ball the inflatable bladder 6 is inserted, and inflated by means of the 4 usual tube 7.
The bladder is constructed with a recess 8 to enable it to envelope the shaft. The paddle blades 9 are shown attached to the shaft 4 by bolts 10, but they may be an integral part of the shaft, which can be in two sections united at the middle.
In use the device is gripped on each side of the central float so that by alternately dipping and pulling the blades the operator may be propelled through the Water.
I claim:
A combined float and paddle device con prising a shaft with blades at each end a centrally positioned float consisting of an Outer covering of fabric material containing an inflatable bag adapted to envelope the shaft.
In testimony whereof he has affixed his signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDRElV GIBSON.
