7 Application filed September22, 1923. Serial No. 564,277. g I
To all whom it may concern: H V t known that I, J OHN SCHADE, a citi- "ze 1 '1 ofthe United States, residing at the of'I-Iolyokd' in the county of Hampden' and stat'eiof' Massachusetts, have invented" certain 5 new and useful Improvements in Unitary Telescoping'Elements and Locking'ltleans; 'andI do declare the followin'ggto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled the artfto which it appertains to r, makeand usethe s'aineQ 'This inventionrelates to unitary telescopelement s and locking means therefor, ando has forfits L'object'to provide a very simple'fia di ,ctive' device'of this description, }and fur,thermore,-to equip the telescoping ,elenl'entsfwith locking 'means which shall be positive and automatically operated by the compression of said elements.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the description to follow supple exited by the accompanying drawing, in
which-* 4 'Figure '1 is a broken plan view illustrating the invention as applied to a loose leaf der.- f
' Figure 2 is a section at the line 22 of Figure 1, the section being taken through the binder elements of the loose leaves only- Figure 3 is a similar section taken at the line 3-3 of Figure 1* Figure 4 is a view illustrating the elements of the improvement in detached condition preparatory to assembly- Figure 5 is a detail broken view partly in section of the inner telescoping elementr Figure 6 is an elevation, partly broken, of the invention in its simplest form, and
Figure 7 is a plan view broken away of one of the loose leaves.
Similar numerals of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
1, 2, are the usual binder elements which may be made of wood or any suitable material each having secured thereto the usual complemental hinge element 3, 4:. 5, 6, are respectively the inner and outer telescoping elements, the former having one extremity externally threaded and closed by a plug 7 having a slot 8, the function of which latter will be hereinafter described. The lower therewith a detent'9.
'The outer telescoping element} Ghas' an extremity of inner elongated gate 10 which opens 'through'thej outer extremity 1 of such element, one wall extending therealon'g" of said gate having ratchet teeth 11.
' 12 is a threaded screw cap which is driven" on the plug end of the e1ement 5 ,"and'13-is an end cap having prongs '14'ex te'nding i'nwardly therefrom, and also having secured P oje ti n ii ly and;
thereto a spindle 15 inwardly therefrom.
'16 is a coil spring whichis assembled around the spindle 15 one extremity 17 o f the springbeing anchored artfund 011G P 10 14 while the other extremity- 18 isancliora within the slot 8 of the plug 71 In assembling'the parts of the imprbve:
ment the inner element 5 is tnrustnp a ny through the elementfi until the threaded end of the former element extends beyond; the
latter element, and the screw cap 12is then driven on the threaded end. Thecoil spring 16 is placedwithin the telescoped members and its extremities anchored inthe manner before described. V
In applying'the device to the"' bind er'elements 1, 2, the outer telescoping element 6' is first then inserted through'the binder 'ele ments, and the inner telescoping element 5 inserted through the element 6, and the screw cap 12 driven on the part 5. spring 16 is then inserted and anchored in the manner before described, and the end cap 13 thrust inwardly to compress the spring, and given one or two turns so as to wind the spring for producing a torsional effect of the latter. When the end cap has been thrust inwardly to completely compress the spring it will be housed within the outer face of one of the binder elements, the element 2 in the present instance, and the prongs 14 will have been thrust beyond the inner face of the binder element and clinched over the same, as more particularly shown at Figure 2 of the drawings.
These prongs 14: pass through grooves 19 formed in the element 2 so that the end cap 13 is prevented from turning and the spring in n is mechanical ekpedi ents, and the m'irention 1.
